Chairperson’s
Note
Dear reader,

I am delighted to present the latest edition of our student handbook. This handbook will pro-
vide you with information regarding the various opportunities within the aviation industry in
Ireland and beyond. Inside this booklet, you will find a list of third-level courses, graduate
programmes, scholarship opportunities and many more resources which will help your career
take flight.

IASA is a student-led initiative, run by a team of dedicated, aviation-passionate third-level

students from across Ireland. We aim to bring students and the industry together through
various events to help students learn about potential career paths and to provide the oppor-
tunity for networking between the present and the future of this rapidly growing industry.

This year has proven to be a challenging year for everyone; students having to adapt to learning
from home, companies learning to work from home and the Aviation industry facing unprec-
edented challenges due to Covid-19. However, all of us here at IASA continue to support
students through these difficult times, with initiatives such as creating an interview series to
keep students up to date with how companies were adapting, fundraising over €1,500 for the
Irish Community Rapid Response whilst making sure we continued engaging with students
through daily Instagram quizzes, our monthly newsletters and weekly blogs.

A year of learning, adapting and overcoming of many challenges, 2020 has strengthened IASA.
We hope that 2021 is a year of prosperity, fulfilment and accomplishments… but overall a year
of success and happiness for all of our committee members, Industry Advisory committee,
Non-executive committee and all students.

I would like to thank a number of people without whom none of this would be possible. First
of all, to our sponsors who help fund the association, allow us to continue to grow and enable
us to host bigger and better events to support students and the industry. A word of gratitude
is due to our Industry Advisory Committee for their support, guidance and assistance through-
out the year and finally. Lastly, a wholehearted thank you to the IASA Committee, both past
and present, for all of their hard work, long meetings and dedication they have shown year-
round. Without the willingness from this incredible group to selflessly volunteer their time and
energy, none of this would be possible.

Feel free to get in touch with us if you have any questions or sign up to our Student Membership
platform to get even more benefits from IASA!

We look forward to seeing you at one of our events very shortly.

Daniel Tetis

focused modules alongside like-minded individuals. Throughout the course, I was
able to become an active member of the DCU Aviation Society, study towards my Name: Jack Caffrey
private pilot’s license and complete a year-long internship in Ryanair’s Flight Operations
Current Position:
Department. I would highly recommend the course to anyone considering a career Trainee Commercial Pilot
within aviation!
Positions within IASA:
Head of Engagement
It was during my first semester in college that I attended IASAs 3rd annual symposium 2019/2020
at the Crowne Plaza in Dublin Airport. I remember being blown away at how a group of aviation students could
run such a professional and successful event. I remember leaving the event knowing I wanted to contribute to
the success of future events.

I joined IASA the following year as a Student Engagement Officer. This role allowed me to engage with both
second and third level students at school talks and career fairs, contribute monthly blog pieces to the IASA website
and travel abroad to promote IASA outside of Ireland. After spending a year as a Student Engagement Officer, I
moved onto the management committee as Head of Engagement. This challenging role gave me the opportunity
to manage a team and allowed me to have more of a say in how IASA was run. I would highly recommend anyone
who has the commitment and desire to join IASA. It has contributed majorly to my own personal development
throughout college but more importantly it has given me friends for life!

My journey into Aviation was a little backwards and not the norm. Having completed
my Leaving Cert in 2015 I failed to obtain a place in the BSc Aviation Management
course in DCU, at the time this was the only aviation business related course in
Ireland, I thought it was the be all and end all. Shortly after this I was offered a place
in the National College Of Ireland, studying marketing. Having always had aviation
at the back of my mind, I began to research back door options into the industry. IASA
was the main platform that enabled me to understand the different career paths
within the aviation industry and subsequently this was what inspired me to apply for Name: Loughlan O’Brien
the MSc in Aviation Leadership at DCU.
Current Position:
Aviation Design Engineer
Having secured a place in the MSAL course at DCU I quickly began to realise that at Arup
I had an interest in the airport planning field. Having completed a research topic Positions within IASA:
on airport accessibility & infrastructure I subsequently secured a role with Arup Marketing Officer
on the airport planning team, where I have worked on several projects for Dublin 2018/2019

and Shannon Airport. I encourage all students who have a passion for aviation to
join IASA.

My journey started with taking flight lessons at NFC in Weston Airport. After com-
pleting a year of lessons, I was sure the aviation industry was for me. I had a keen
interest in the operation of the aircraft, so I applied to IT Carlow to study their BEng
Aircraft Systems. This degree programme offered me the opportunity to develop
skills I never imagined I would obtain, from machining and manufacturing, aircraft
maintenance knowledge and circuit design to soldering.

Name: Bridget Corry

After my second year at IT Carlow I realised I wanted to continue to study and decided
to apply to study Aerospace Engineering at Queens University Belfast. Between Current Position:
Pricing Analyst at Genesis
finishing IT Carlow and starting at Queens, I took on an internship with CIT Aerospace
working along with their technical team and gaining invaluable experience. I spent Positions within IASA:
Chairperson
the following summer between year one and year two at Queens as in intern, this
2017/2018
time in SMBC AC. This allowed me the opportunity to apply some of the skills I had
learned the previous year while learning about another company’s culture and getting real responsibility within
a number of teams in the company.

I completed my degree at Queens in 2018 and joined Genesis Aircraft Leasing. Since joining Genesis I have been
given the opportunity to travel internationally to meet with customers as part of the commercial team, but have
since moved to a pricing analyst role, where I am responsible for underwriting and pricing of aircraft for operating
lease re-marketing, and sale. The Industry is big, exciting and right on your doorstep. Take every opportunity you
can get, find a mentor that will give you guidance, and be open minded about where you could go in the future.

It was the wonder of flight that drew me to my love for aviation. I was fascinated and
enthralled by aeroplanes and loved being inside them. Since I was little, I loved hearing
the words, “Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome aboard”, coming from the cockpit. Even
then, I knew I always wanted to have a career in aviation. Our little island has shown
considerable growth since the birth of commercial aviation in the early 20th century.
Our expertise, the pool of talent, favourable tax, and track record are key elements
that have turned Ireland into a global aviation hub. Since its inception in 2015, IASA
has significantly become a key player within the aviation industry by bridging the gap Name: Gareth Lau
between students and the industry in Ireland and beyond. I proudly joined IASA in Current Position:
April 2017, as a Student Engagement Officer and worked my way up to Chairperson. Business Executive at
CitySwift
These two roles gave me countless opportunities to work alongside an amazing
committee, network with like-minded individuals, attend industry events and enhance Positions within IASA:
Chairperson
my professional development. Throughout my studies, I was very fortunate to secure
2018/2019
two internships at Airbus Flight Hour Services and Peak Performance Recruitment.
These roles provided me with a broader understanding and knowledge of the industry which I found fulfilling and
rewarding in every way. Lastly, during my final year, I worked as a Crew Tracker at Norwegian Air International. I
worked alongside a very experienced team from across parts of the globe which gave me valuable experience
and a great insight into flight operations. The best part of the job was that every day brought new challenges and
excitement.

Looking back now, being a part of IASA has been one of the greatest honours of my life and has given me great
memories that will last a lifetime. I would highly recommend anyone who has the commitment, dedication, and
passion for aviation to join IASA. IASA has given me an in-depth knowledge of the aviation industry, the necessary
life skills and lifelong friends. I wholeheartedly believe in IASA’s mission of empowering the next generation of
aviation professionals. IASA is here to support you; by providing networking opportunities and pointing you in the
right direction for any question you may have.
