Maximum Marks:15

1. An electronic weighing machine with digital indication need to be designed.

Assuming suitable primary sensing, show the block diagram design of the same. (3)

2. Given an example of (3)

a) An instrument with dual sensitivity and briefly explain how it produces an
unanticipated error.
b) An instrument with varying sensitivity in its range of operation, how it needs to be
handled.

3. What is the importance of time response and frequency response characteristics? (2)

4. List the reasons for the following, (3)

a) Linearity and sensitivity are two conflicting requirements in the design of
potentiometric displacement transducer.
b) Piezo resistive strain gauge is preferred in silicon-based pressure transducer.

5. A temperature probe is transferred from air at 15 ̊C to air a 30 ̊C, to water at 60 ̊C,

and back to air at 30 C̊ . Assume that in each case the transfer is “instantaneous.” The
effective time constants and the timing sequence are as follows:
In air, probe dry τ= 24 s;
In water, τ= 4 s;
In air, probe wet τ= 17 s;

For t< 0, T= 15 ̊C (T =actual temperature),

0 < t < 5, T= 30 ̊C (dry probe in air),
5 < t < 10, T= 60 ̊C (probe in water),
10 < t < 20, T= 30 ̊C (wet probe in air).
Calculate the indicated temperature at the end of each time interval and sketch the
approximate indicated temperature-time relationship between t = 0 and t = 20 s. (4)
