Journal Critic: Exploring the factors affecting implementation of evidence based nursing practice in
King Fahd Hospital of the Hospital of the university/Al Khobar? K.S.A

Introduction

The introduction is strong, he was directly telling his viewer that he is here to inform us and
give insight on how to implement evidence based practice. However, in my opinion story telling is
more engaging starting with how is their facility fairing in terms of policy and insight on their
challenges they encounter in their facility. He clearly informed us to what will be the topic about,
and how it will change or revolutionized the nursing practice of future nurses that might work to
their facilities or other facilities doing evidence based practice. He did inform the viewer of some
theory that we used in the early days of nursing practice however the shift of time to more clinical
research developed the evidence based practice hence theory is not applicable here unless the
facility is evaluating the theory based practice however, that’s not the case he focuses in evidence
practice and its factors affecting its implementation.

Related literature

His references are within 5 years basis based on the time of published. However, in his
article he is mentioning some rather old articles from the 80s, and he is doing it to let the viewer see
the transition of the theory based practice to evidence based practice. It is relevant since it
described how we developed more effective practice and the now “new” normal for the nursing
practice. Now he is inspiring the viewer to be more of a researcher since it will revolutionize the
practice of our profession. He did use theory as basis and guide as a catalyst of change in the
practice without the theory we will never get where we are now. Still in the prevalence of evidence
practice, theory is still important as it will serve as our basis of researches in the future.

Research question or Hypothesis

The aim of the study is to explore the factors that have effect on the implementation of
evidence based nursing practice. Specifically he wants to identify the factors related to the hospital
and the nurse as education, knowledge, position, speciality, and nationality, that have effects on the
implementation of evidence-based nursing practice. Also to identify the sources of information that
are used more frequently by the nurses in the clinical care provided to the patients. Also to explore
the perception of nursing leaders and managers about the infrastructure elements that support
evidence-based nursing practice implementation and to explore the behaviour of the nursing leaders
and managers towards activities related to evidence-based practice.

Research Design

The study utilized quantitative study design since the researcher has hypothesis in mind he is
right to used quantitative design because this will test his hypothesis rather using qualitative design.
Research method use is Descriptive since he will be dealing with numbers and concentration. For his
sample size he did not use sampling technique since he use 100 percent of the population of his
facility from managers which he divided in two criteria and all staff who do bedside care. For the tool
he developed his two set of tools good thing he did a reliability and validity testing he consulted
team of expert comprising nursing faculties, nursing managers, and other researches consultant, he
also did pilot study wherein he scored 100 percent response rate where in the accepted score is
97%. For reliability the tool score 0.713 and 0.862 in Cronbach’s alpha coefficients wherein accepted
score is 0.7 to 0.9 indicating good reliability. For data collection the researcher distributed the
questionnaire to all staff and nursing leaders who met the inclusion criteria. The researcher’s
strategy was to give the questionnaire intended to staff to their leaders for distribution also
invitation to participate to the research and informed consent were attached to each copy of the the
questionnaire.

Result and Findings

The researcher utilized SPSS version 19.0 software, Descriptive statistics include frequencies,
percentages, means, and standard deviations. He also use Chi-square correlation analysis with the
significance level set at 0.05 level of significance was used to find association between nurses’ back
ground variables and their knowledge about EBNP, their behaviour and perception to barriers
affecting implementation of EBNP. The findings indicated by the researcher was that the nurses
recognized the importance of EBP and its potential value for their clinical practice, which was
consistent with some previous studies. The study also revealed that only 50% of the staff nurses
knew the exact meaning of evidence-based practice. This finding is consistent with a study of
Mclnerney and Suleman who revelead lack of knowledge pertaining EBP in a south African
Institution. The presentation of result was tabular form wherein he make sure that the result will be
interpreted by the readers easily.

Reflection

As a Future nurse, I understand that the trend now is the evidence-based practice. This make
me think that in the future when I became a nurse I must consider to be relevant to the community
by being a Research nurse starting from small scale and larger scale. Also a continuous education or
master and doctoral degree is now in the list of my professional goal once became a nurse this will
cement the name and my alma mater to the history of the profession. But for now I will focus to
passing the board exam and completing my bachelors degree.
