1. Draw the structure of the government ( detailed structure ) of the


Philippines during the Spanish Period. Do not copy and paste.

2.  What
are the so
called
"evils" of the Spanish Regime. Why are they regarded as "evils"? Explain
each briefly. ( 2- 3 sentences only )

11 Evils during the Spanish Regime


1. Instability of Colonial Administration
 The instability of the Spanish government that time affected Philippines
indirectly. Through which, there is a sudden shift to rules in the country.
Colonial officials were frequently changed also which forbids development
for the community as no plans are made into reality.

2. Corrupt Colonial Officials (or Corrupt Officialdom)


 The colonial officials sent to the Philippines are violent and corrupt ones.
It made our country suffer from their abuses. The officials took advantage
of our resources, both natural and human resources.

3. Philippine Representation in Spanish Cortes


 This resulted to a positive one at first, but, the colonizers fear that the
injustices that the Filipinos are experiencing under their government
might be exposed. Thus, no other representation was granted after the first
one.

4. Human Rights Denied to Filipinos


 Filipinos were deprived from their basic human rights. Even the
knowledge of the colonial officials about its necessity, they remain abusive
and violent to the Filipinos.

5. No Equality before the Law


 The injustices that our ancestor faced cannot be cried out to the law since
the law (as for the colonizers) protects the white Spaniards only. In that
sense, the abuses and exploitation of Filipinos continues especially on the
last decades of their Hispanic rule.

6. Maladministration of Justice
 The court of justice is said to be the court of the injustices itself. Filipinos
are deprived from their rights to filling lawsuit since it is costly and slow.
Most Filipinos that time were poor and ignorant due to lack of education.
7. Racial Discrimination
 Filipinos were called indios and claimed by the Spanish colonizers as
ignorant. In contrary to their Christian teachings, Filipinos were
discriminated because of their skin color and flat nose.

8. Frailocracy
 Philippines were ruled by Friars in political, educational and religious
endeavors. But not all friars were good; most of them were the roots of he
evils and abuses to the Filipinos.

9. Forced Labor
 Male Filipinos from 18-40 years old were to work for 40 days a year
compulsorily in building schools, churches and hospitals. Only poor
Filipinos were to work since the rich ones especially the white Spanish
residents will just pay the government to be exempted. Also, later abuses
occur through making Filipinos work far from their homes or not giving
the workers their stipend.

10. Haciendas owned by Friars


 The ancestral lands owned by Filipinos through generations of generation
were legally claimed as their own by the Friars through Spanish royal
titles. Filipinos became tenant of their own land and paid the Friars.

11. The Guardia Civil


 In contrary to the Guardia Civil’s purpose of maintaining internal peace,
they were abusive and maltreated innocent Filipinos. They also corrupt
live stocks and farm stocks of the Filipinos. They were the destroyer of
peace who took advantage of the authority vested upon them.
