CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

In today’s interconnected world, Information and Communication

Technology (ICT) is widely used by our nation and it affects our lives every day. It

gives great impact in education for the learners and teachers. ICT has become a

key driver in education way as well as it has been identified by a range of

important wider benefits of ICT on learning. The positive impact of ICT on

students’ skills and teamwork are included. ICT also help student and teacher

with activities that are provided in the websites. That kind of activities gives ideas

to the teachers in their teaching, so that students enjoy the class. Students learn

more independently at the same time. They will take more responsibility for

learning process. As seen from the information above, ICT can benefit both

strong and weak students with their special needs. By the way, they especially

improved the performance in students’ English and on writing skills. ICT is a part

of a social system integrating meaningful communication within an education

system. We can use it for analyzing the processes, meanings and functions of

ICT in education. ICT also provided the research for us when we have to do the

assignments (Habibu, 2012).

ICT is also one of the tools that have easy communication with others in

foreign countries. It saves cost and time. Schools use ICT to make it easy for

both students and teachers of their work. Different information and opinion can

be found from the web-sites. In addition, ICT provides wide array of information

and effective lessons. That is also easy for students to do their work by using

word processing. It makes our projects or assignments more neat and tidy. From

the education system point of view, “e-” could mean “enhanced” education rather

than “electronic” education. Consequently, ICT has a great impact on society

especially on education. Students who generally communicate with friends by the

ICT will cause a problem when communicating face to face. It not only has an

impact on character but also their attitude. Somehow, they will become more

rebellious when influenced by the negative material. Today, we can see that

have many teenagers use two or three phones. It will cause them not to pay

attention in the lesson time [e.g. (Janz et al., 2017; Turnbull and Irwig, 2012;

Little et al., 2011)].

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Paaralang Sekundarya ng Lucban Integrated School is one of those

schools that develops an ICT integrated learning from a simple calculator, mobile

modules and installed dictionaries up to the most common ICTs in education

which is the power point, publisher, documents and spread sheet.

ICTs have the potential to innovate, accelerate, enrich, and deepen skills,

to motivate and engage students, to help relate school experience to work

practices, create economic viability for tomorrow's workers, as well as

strengthening teaching. Computers and applications of technology became more

pervasive in society which led to a concern about the need for computing skills in

everyday life.

The effects of the utilization of ICT in teaching and learning process in

Paaralang Sekundarya ng Lucban Integrated School is assumed to have impact

to the students’ academic performance. With these, the researchers were

motivated to conduct a study to determine the effects in utilizing ICT on the

academic performance of SHS students. And also, for the researchers to make a

recommendation and solution about the affects the students’ academic

performance.

However, the purpose of the study is to determine the effects of utilizing

ICT on the academic performance of the Senior High School students of

Paaralang Sekundarya ng Lucban Integrated School.

The integration of information and communication technologies can help

revitalize teachers and students. This can help to improve and develop the

quality of education by providing curricular support in difficult subject areas. To

achieve these objectives, teachers need to be involved in collaborative projects

and development of intervention change strategies, which would include teaching

partnerships with ICT as a tool

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study generally aims to know the effects of utilizing ICT on the

academic performance of SHS students in PSLIS in terms of their subject

requirements so proper intervention was formulated to help them. Specifically,

this study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the demographic profiles of the respondents in terms of?

1.1. Age

1.2. Sex

1.3. Strand

2. What are the effects of utilizing of ICT in terms of?

2.1. Academic Performance

2.2. Computer Literacy

3. Is there any significant difference between the demographic profile of the

students and the academic performance of students?

4. What proper output intervention can be formulated based from this study?

Hypothesis

Based from the research problem formulated, a null hypothesis will be tested:

H OThere is no significant difference among the demographic profile of the

students, effects of ICT utilization, and academic performance of Senior High

School students in Paaralang Sekundarya ng Lucban Integrated School.

Significance of the Study

Students, this study will help the students gain the skills they will need to

be successful in the future since proper intervention can be provided to address

the effects in utilizing ICT on their academic performance. If this is addressed

students can help develop many practical skills, including creating presentations,

learning to differentiate reliable from unreliable sources on the Internet,

maintaining proper online etiquette, and writing emails.

Teachers, this study can identify the effects of ICT utilization faced by the

students on their academic performance’, so the teachers can improve the

proper teaching strategy appropriate to keep students more engaged. Proper

intervention can also be developed by the teacher to help the student’s achieved

their full potential in the development of the 21st century skills.

Future researchers, this study can be a baseline to the future

researchers to conduct another study. In this research, the effects of utilizing ICT

that the students are facing will be identified so, the future researchers can make

another study that can improve this research.

Scope and Limitation

This study entitled, “Effects of Utilization of ICT on the Academic

Performance of Senior High School Students of Paaralang Sekundarya ng

Lucban Integrated School.” It aims to determine the effects of ICT utilization on

the academic performance of SHS students. The researchers selected the

subject of the study in a cluster sampling technique for more valid and effective

result for the research. The researchers employed a structured questionnaire to

gather information for the study. Senior High School students will answer the

questions base on their experience. The answers of the students will determine

the effects of ICT utilization on the academic performance.

This will be conducted in Paaralang Sekundarya ng Lucban Integrated

School, process of the study will end up to March 2020.

Definition of Terms

For a better understanding of the study, important terms are operationally

and conceptually defined as follows:

Academic Performance the knowledge, and skills that students have mastered

in a subject it measures of how well students have performed in the various

assessment set for them based on some educational criteria determined by

professional educators (Lee, 2019).

Effects A change that results when something is done or happen; an event

condition or state of affairs that is produced by a cause (Merriam Webster).

ICT “Information and Communication Technologies." ICT refers to technologies

that provide access to information through telecommunications. This includes the

Internet, wireless networks, cell phones, and other communication mediums

(Tech-terms). The infrastructure and components that enable modern computing.

Internet the large system of connected computers around the world which

people use to communicate with each other (Cambridge Dictionary). Sometimes

called simply "the Net," is a worldwide system of computer networks.

Utilizing is a fancy way of saying "use.";

Technology Services are professional services designed to facilitate the use of

technology by enterprises and end users (Techopedia). May also include

services not directly related to information technology, such as telephone and

cable TV services.
