Minor - I : 25%
Major Test : 40%
Tutorial/Assignments/Quiz : 35%

Course content

1. Concept of stresses and strains: Definitions, transformation, Mohr’s circle, generalized Hooke’s law,
thermal stresses, yield criteria, differential equations of equilibrium, compatibility conditions
2. Pure bending of straight beams, symmetric and unsymmetric cross sections. bending stresses
3. Torsion of circular cross section members
4. Energy methods: Castigliano’s theorems, determinate and indeterminate structures
5. Deflections of straight beams
6. Shear stresses in beams
7. Elastic stability of columns
8. Axisymmetric problems: Thin and thick-walled cylinders subjected to internal and external pressures,
rotating disks, stress concentrations

Note:

• Practical component of the course will be held in the next semester as per the guidelines of the Institute.
• Lectures will be conducted in asynchronous mode. Live doubt clearing sessions will be held every week.
• Lecture videos will be made available at MS Teams/Impartus platform.
• Online quizes will be conducted frequently during the tutorial sessions.
• There will be no make-up tests. Minor test, only for those who missed the minor test due to valid medical
reasons, will be given towards the end of the semester.
• Tutorial problems will be circulated before each tutorial class.
• Attendance will be marked in all live classes.
• Anyone found using unfair means in the evaluation components will be penalized as per the rules.
Penalty includes reducing the grade by one or two grades or even awarding an ‘F’ grade.
