LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS IN MATHEMATICS

Grade 5
First Quarter
Week 2

I. Activity Title: Classifying numbers divisible by 4, 8, 11 and 12

II. MELC: uses divisibility rules for 4, 8, 12 and 11 to find the common factors
(M5NS-Ib-58.3)

III. Intended Learning Outcome:

1. classifies numbers divisible by 4, 8, 12 and 11
2. determines numbers that are divisible by 4, 8, 12 and 11
3. works with speed and accuracy
IV. Introduction
The divisibility rule is a shortcut for figuring out if a certain number is divisible by 4, 8,
11, and 12 without having to actually solve the division problem. It easily tests if a number can
be exactly divided by another. Divisible by means when you divide a number by another
number the result is a whole number.
Consider the table below:

Numbers Divisible by
4 8 11 12
812 1 640 132 220 4 416
2 436 6 472 264 385 7 152
4 860 104 120 495 946 71 556
2 012 2 000 979 102 744
2 016 12 184 1 364 118 488
How do we know if a number is divisible by 4, 8, 11, and 12?

V. Discussion and Examples

Divisibility rule for 4
A number is divisible by 4 if the number formed by the last two digits of a number is
divisible by 4. Also, a number ending with two zeros is always divisible by 4.
Example 1: Is 812 divisible by 4?
Solution:
12 ÷ 4 = 3 (divide the last two digits by 4)
Therefore, 812 is divisible by 4. Specifically, 812 ÷ 4 = 203

Example 2: The number 3 672 is divisible by 4 because the number formed

by the last two digits, 72, is divisible by 4. That is, 3 672 ÷ 4 = 918

Example 3: 67 700 is also divisible by 4 since the last two digits are both zeros.

Divisibility rule for 8

daisy.garol01@deped.gov.ph
Dumanjug I MKP
A number is divisible by 8 if the number formed by the last three digits of a number is
divisible by 8. Also, a number ending in three zeros is always divisible by 8.
Example 1: Is 12 184 divisible by 8?
Solution:
The last three digits of 12 184 are 184
184 ÷ 8 = 23
Therefore 12 184 is divisible by 8. That is, 12 184 divided by 8 is 1 523.

Example 2: The number 3 128 is divisible by 8 because 128 ÷ 8 = 16, it is

therefore, divisible by 8

Example 3: The number 81 000 is divisible by 8 since it ends with three

zeros.

Divisibility rule for 11

A number is divisible by 11 if the difference of the sum of the digit in
the odd places and the sum of those in the even places of the number;
1. Has a difference of zero
2. Has a difference divisible by or multiple of 11

Example 1: Is 594 divisible by 11?

Solution:
The alternate digits of 594 are 5 and 4, whose sum is 5 + 4 = 9.
The remaining digit is 9
The difference of these two is 9 – 9 = 0, which is divisible by 11
So, the original number 594 is divisible by 11. That is 594÷11=54

Example 2: 91 839
Solution:
The alternate digits of 91 839 are 9, 8 and 9 whose sum is 9+8+9= 26
The remaining digits of 91 839 are 1 and 3 , whose sum is 1 + 3 = 4
The difference of these two is 26 – 4 = 22, which is divisible by 11.
So, the original number 91 839 is divisible by 11. That is
91 839 ÷ 11 = 8 349

Example 3: 278 575

2 + 8 + 7 = 17 7 + 5 + 5 = 17 Find the sum of the alternate digits
17 – 17 = 0 Find the difference.
Since the difference of the sum of the alternate digits of the
number is 0, then 278 575 is divisible by 11.

Divisibility rule for 12

A number is divisible by 12 if it is divisible by both 3 and 4

Example 1: Is 3 456 divisible by 12?

Find the sum of the digits. 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 18
Since the sum of the digits, 18, is a multiple of 3 and the last 2
digits of the number is 56 which is a multiple of 4, then 3 456 is
divisible by 12.

Example 2: Is the number 1 716 divisible by 12?

Solution:
1 716 is divisible by 3 since the sum of the digits 1 + 7 + 1 +6 = 15 is
divisible by 3
1 716 is divisible by 4 since the last two digits, 16 is divisible by 4.

Therefore, 1 716 is divisible by 12. That is, 1 716 ÷ 12 = 143
