DISCUSSION OF ACTIVITY 1

3
Education is done in a formal set up, where teachers and students are only inside the classroom
throughout the teaching and learning process. It follows a certain and approved curriculum to conduct and finish
the lessons with an authentic assessment and outputs. But as the years passed by, changes happened in the
formal set up.
Non-formal education is also an organized educational activity mostly done outside the formal set up. It
is flexible, learner-centered and has no age limit. Also, non-formal education characterised by a deliberate
choice of the person. Meaning, participants in this kind of set up may join at any age, just because they like or
want it and willingly.
In sociological perspective, education has manifest and latent function. Manifest function pertains as the
intended goals of a certain action in an institution. On the contrary, latent function refers to the unintentional
consequences.
As for the goals of education, there are three important goals; productive citizenry, self-actualization,
and raise that it is a human right. It is believed that education helps people create themselves to be a productive
citizen in order to contribute for the improvement of their community. Also, education is a human right that
should be given and enjoyed by everyone. And lastly, people use education to realize their life’s fulfilment
where they keep on striving to reach the peak of the fulfilment. According to Maslow, there are several
characteristics of a self-actualized people:
