Biostatistics with Epidemiology Laboratory Name: Panugao, Karl Anreu Citto

Lab 7: Independent Sample t-test Date: November 4,2020

Objectives:

1) Perform hypothesis testing using independent sample t-test in Excel.

2) Compute for effect size.

3) Present and interpret results of statistical analysis.

TASK:
Eight men applying to State University had a sample mean and variance on College Board tests of 1,050
and 2,500 respectively. The respective numbers for nine women were 1,075 and 3,600. Test at the .05
level of significance whether women did better than men on these tests.
Null Hypothesis.
There is no significant difference between women did better than men based on the scores on the
College Board tests.
H0: μwomen = μmen

Alternative Hypothesis.
There is a significant difference between women did better than men based on the scores on the
College Board tests.
H1: μwomen > μmen

Perform independent t-test in excel. Paste a snip of the excel results below.

Decision:
Since the p = 0.18 is greater than 0.05, the null hypothesis (H0: μwomen = μmen) is not rejected. Therefore,
there is no significant difference between women did better than men.

Effect Size:

Cohen’s d = |-0.44986| ᴝ 0.45

Conclusion:, The effect size of the between women did

better than men on College Board tests is higher than
small effect size and lesser than the medium effect
size. Percentile ranges from 58-69 with a 15%-33% of
non-overlap.

Summary: Discuss the interpretation of the result of hypothesis testing and effect size (in the form it would
appear in a research paper).

Null and Alternative Hypotheses

There is no significant difference between women did better than men based on the scores on the

College Board tests.

H0: μwomen = μmen

There is a significant difference between women did better than men based on the scores on the

College Board tests.

H1: μwomen > μmen

This symbolizes to a one-tailed test, for which a t-test for two means, with equal variances are

utilized. Based on the information provided, the significance level is a = 0.05,

Using the method of p value approach: The p-value is p= 0.18460418, and since p= 0.18460418 > 0.05,

therefore, it is concluded that the null hypothesis is rejected.

It is concluded that the null hypothesis H0 is not rejected. Therefore, the claim that the College Board test

scores of women did better than men are not significantly different at the 0.05 significance level.

The effect size is computed as follows:

Sample mean 1−Sample mean 2 1050−1075

= =|−0.4498|ᴝ 0.45
Pooled standard deviation 55.57337492

The effect size of the between women did better than men on College Board tests is higher than small

effect size and lesser than the medium effect size. Percentile ranges from 58-69 with a 15%-33% of non-

overlap.
