Roman culture is more perfect, that is, complete, if you look at it as a Greco-
Roman culture. In his book The Legacy of Rome, the well-known English
philologist Richard Jenkins, quoting Selley writes: “We are all Greeks. Our laws,
our literature, our religion, our arts have their roots in Greece. Without Greece,
Rome the teacher, the conqueror, the metropolis of our ancestors, would not have
spread the illustration with their weapons, and we would still be savages and
idolaters, or what is worse, we could have reached such a stagnant state of social
institution and miserable like that of China and Japan ”.
A part of the expressions that come from Greek Mythology are now used very
frequently, having infiltrated the common lexicon of the population. Other
expressions are not present in everyday vocabulary, but sometimes they appear in
literary or scientific works. If we do not know their meanings, it is not possible to
understand the works exactly. That is why it is necessary to study the influence
of Greek Mythology in the Spanish language.
Linguists have already ordered the expressions that have the Greek origin and
have put their own name: Hellenism. For example, Jorge Bergua Cavero
meticulously classified Hellenisms according to their phonology and morphology
in his book Los Helenismos Del Español; González Castro listed approximately
five thousand Castilian words in his book, including, of course, those that come
specifically from Greek mythology; and José Luís Herrero, professor at the
University of Salamanca, whose thesis is entitled The Mythological Lexicon in
the Middle Ages and in The Renaissance, is also worth mentioning.
Based on the pioneers, this work focuses on typical expressions from Greek
myths and analyzes the influence of Greek Mythology on the Spanish language.
First, Ancient Greek Mythology and the reasons that influence on the Spanish
language will be briefly introduced. Secondly, the main origins of the Spanish
lexicon will be summarized, and within it, the words of Greek origin will be
highlighted. Thirdly, some typical words and phrases of Greek mythological
origin will be explained.
Classical literature clearly classified the works into various literary genres, which broadly
remain to this day. This classification was created in Greece, but it passed to Latin with
some common characteristics
GÉNEROS:
*lírica
*épica
*dramática
GENDERS:
The literary genres created in Greece were minimally varied in Rome. Traditionally three
major genres are distinguished called
*lyric
* epic
* dramatic
But in addition to these major poetic genres, in antiquity others were cultivated in prose.
Among these we are going to highlight the philosophy and the scientific and technical
prose, of which we have spoken in previous epigraphs, the novel, historiography and
especially rhetoric and oratory.
In Rome there were some literary genres of their own. The Romans distinguished in the
theater between works of Italic origin and those of Greek origin: the former were called
fabula togata (play represented with toga, Roman national costume) and fabula palliata
(play represented with pallium), making reference to the actors' clothing.
GÉNEROS LITERARIOS DE GRECIA
Géneros aristotélicos:
Aristotelian genres:

THE ANTHEM
The hymn is one of the oldest poetic forms, at first the hymn was a choral composition
(to be sung) in honor of a god, who is reminded of favors, tributes, or thanksgiving. It
became one of the poetic genres of Greco-Latin classical literature, to later perpetuate
itself as a genre in Latin poetry of the Middle Ages.
* la historiografía
* La Oratoria
El DRAMA: Tragedia y Comedia
* historiography
* Oratory
Greek theater reaches its maximum splendor in the 5th century, under the rule of
Pericles. It was one more element in the democratic element configuration of Athens
The tragedy:
The tragedy staged the great problems of man far from everyday life through characters
who used to be heroes and gods and whose themes came from myth
La Comedia: Aristófanes
comedy staged situations directly related to everyday life, its characters often being
archetypes of a social class
The main topics covered by classical Roman literature are related to the specific literary
genre. The themes of the epic in Rome refer to the events of the war between Rome and
Carthage for dominance of the Mediterranean etc.
The themes of Roman lyric mostly refer to love affairs and the contemplation of nature
