An Appeal and a Request
I seek the indulgence of the discerning readers and implore them to let me tell the only reason
why I ventured into compilation of this Booklet. I also request them to critically study and offer
their valuable feedback.

Sandhyavandanam is one of the important daily religious prayers which ought to be practised
without fail. Reference to this sacred ritual is found in many religious texts of yore including
Vedas. Many learned sages and Rishis spoke eloquently of Sandhyavandanam and gave away
reasons as to why it should be treated as a must-to-do daily Kriya. Interestingly both the texts
abd the sages dwelled on the importance and practice of Sandhyavandanam but quite
intriguingly were silent on the original source of this important Kriya. With my limited knowledge
and resources, I could not unearth any such original reference to the actual Sandhyavandanam
procedure. I could, however, come across anthologies dealing with detailed explanations
(Bhashya) of Vedic Mantras to be chanted as a part of Sandhyavandanam. I will briefly mention
a few of them later.

Traditionally we speak of Sandhyavandanam under Rigveda, Yajurveda and Samaveda

sampradayas. Except for some minor differences, the main contours of the Kriya are same in all
the three Vedic procedures. Now-a-days, only one branch of Rigveda namely, Sakalya Sakha is
remaining. In Yajurveda one comes across Taittiriyas (Krishna Yajurvedis) in South India and
Vajasaneyas (Shukla Yajurvedis) in North India. One Rananiya branch is prevalent in
Samaveda. Another important and significant thing to be noted is the gradual dwindling in
number of practicing Rigvedis and Samavedis. The number of Taittiriya Sandhyavandana
publications outnumbers those of other two Vedas. Due to this “mass effect”, some of the
Mantras which are specific for Rigveda or Samaveda Sandhyavandanam are getting replaced
with those found in Taittiriya Sandhyavandanam. As an example, chanting Taittiriya
Punarmarjana mantra and offering Prayaschitta Arghya by chanting Gayatri Mantra. It is
therefore desirable to know these subtle differences.

Over a period of time, Sandhyavandanam as practised by these Vedic branches saw many
modifications and alterations. There could be many reasons for this change in practices. Many
later texts of Sandhyavandanam that were brought out included additional slokas to reflect
changed customs, traditions or practices. Also, influence of historical, religious or such other
extraneous factors as daily prayers, saw expansion of the Sandhyavandanam procedure. Some
Mantras with similar meaning are included in different places. For example, The Sloka
् ु B'ते पापं तदDना''त-Zतम
“यदDना''त-क ् ु य'ते | याSया''त-क
् ु B'ते पापं ताSया''त-Zतम
् ु य'ते |” has similar
meaning as seen in Jalabhimantranam Mantra “सय
ू G चमामIयGु चमIयप
ु तयGच मIयक
ु ृ ते\यः ।
पापे\योरIताम ्। या]या पापमकाषम ्।“. This could have been done with a view to retaining the
entire section of the Anuvakam in Taittiriya Arnyaka containing the Sloka “आ यातु वरदा दे वी
अरं ....” Another interesting addition is the inclusion of Mantras (“गाय]याः गायीछIदो
/वGवामऋ/षः स/वता दे वता ।…. “ and the Dhyana slokam “Qयाये सदा स/वतम
ृ WडलमQयवत_ नारायणः
सरसजासनी/वEटः…..” chanted during Upanayanam (Thread ceremony). In addition, Slokas in
praise of one’s home deity (Ishta Deivam) were also included. Our ancestors used to perform
daily Anushtanam, Nitya Puja and Sandhyavandanam and with a view to conserving the time,
some intermixing of all the three might have been attempted. This is what we see, according to
me, in the current texts on Sandhyavandanam. Another interesting point to be noted is the
different practices. Some differences in the practice of Sandhyavandanam are as follows:

(a) In achamanam, instead of Keshavaya Namah, Narayanaya Namah, Madhavaya Namah

chanting Achyutaya Namah, Anantaya Namah, Govindaya namah are chanted. It has
been mentioned that chanting of these three Namas has been recommended in the
Book “Sri Vishnu Tilakam. But I could not get that book and so it is not possible to
comment on this observation. It is also seen that a particular school of tradition follows
this.

(b) Some chant only twelve Kashava Namas for Achamanam while some others chant
twenty-four Kashava Namas. The six Sandhyavandana Bhashyams I could access (pre-
19th Century and the reference is given below), mention all the twenty-four Keshava
Namas and there is no reference to twelve Names of Vishnu for Achamanam. One book
on Taittiriya Sandhyavandanam published in 1931 (reference is given below) refers to
chanting only 12 Namas while performing Achamanam.

(c) Simple and easy procedure of achamanam also underwent changes. All the three
varieties of achamanam namely Srutyachamanam (Sroutachamanam),
Smartachamanam (Smrityachamanam) and Puranachamanm are being observed as per
the traditions and practices.

(d) The cleansing of different organs (Suddhi Kriya) and the corresponding Keshava Nama
are at variance among various practitioners.

(e) Different Slokas in Punarmarjanam.

(f) Difference in the sequence of proper Arghyas and the Mantra for Expiatory offering
(Prayachittha Arghya). Some offer the expiatory arghya before the three proper arghyas
whereas others follow the opposite sequence. Also, some chant Gayatri mantra as the
Mantra for the expiatory arghya while others chant different mantra.

(g) One of the Slokas “उaमे शखरे दे वी भP

ू यां पवतमध
ू न ।…….” is recited first in the Gayatri
Upasthana section but it is mentioned that as a practice Rigvedis chant this Sloka at the
end of the Sandhyavandana Kriya.

(h) Offering Tarpanam became a part of Sandhyavandanam in some schools. Even here,
differences are seen in Tarpana mantras.

(i) Some necessarily perform Gayatri Mudras as a part of Sandhyavandanam.

(j) Anganyasa and Karanyasa are performed by some. In actual practice, these are part of
Tantric practices that were borrowed into Sandhyavandanam. One of the Gayatri
Mantras (म ु ता-/वमु -हे म-नील धवलछायैमख
ु ीणै-….) mentioned in a book on Tantra
sastra is chanted in Sandhyavandanam. This Mantra is the 15th sloka in 21st Patalam
(Chapter) of the book “Sarada Tilaka Tantram” written by Lakshmana Desikendra. In the
third Pada (Line), the word “सा/वS” has been replaced by “गायS” in Sandhyavandanam.
In view of so many variations in Sandhyavandanam, naturally one is confused and is unclear
about the ab- initio procedure for Sandhyavandanam: which of the procedures mentioned above
can be treated as the “original” Sandhyavandanam or is there an entirely different procedure?
Another interesting and intriguing point is, despite having so many books and explanations on
Sandhyavandanam, to my knowledge, no information is available on the ab-initio step-wise
procedure and the sequence of Mantra or the author of the Kriya. Young lads being initiated into
Sandhyavandanam are more prone to blindly follow the tailor-made procedure made available
and taught to them by his elders and other Gurus. The nascent Brahmacharis may neither have
the time nor the inclination to dwell deep into the subject and look for the “root” literature or the
ab-initio procedure of Sandhyavandanam.

An attempt has been made in this Booklet to present before the discerning and inquisitive
readers, the ab-initio procedure and the sequence of Sandhyavandana Kriya as I understand
from the literature. I humbly implore the readers not to treat the subject discussed in the Booklet
as an adverse comment on the procedure that is being routinely followed in any household. I
cannot dare and venture into point out, leave alone demand, that the Kriya handed to us by our
learned ancestors needs to be re-looked into. To what extent, I succeed in my effort; you and
you alone are the judge.

Sandhyavandana ab-initio procedure

Most of the Sandhyavandana slokas have been taken from Rigveda and Taittiriya Aranyakas
and compiled in a particular order. I was not able to identify the compiler. Paying homage and
obeisance to that unknown compiler, I will try to understand the meanings of the slokas in
Sandhyavandanam. I could not succeed to understand the source and meanings of some of the
slokas. Erudite readers may kindly excuse my temerity, point out any mistakes in my
understanding and interpretation of Sandhyavandana slokas. I will correct them.

The main purpose of writing this Booklet is to understand the Sandhyavandana Kriya and not to
preach/educate or teach how to perform Sandhyavandanam. Fully knowing my limitations, I
undertook the task of exploring the literature I could come across. In particular, I tried to locate
as an early literature on the subject as possible with the feeling that perhaps that would give me
more insight into the slokas and practices. The earliest literature I could get is Anthologies on
Sandhyavandanam (Sandhyavandana Bhashyam) from the 17th Century. There were six such
Anthologies out of which two were dated and the remaining four were undated. A brief
description of these six anthologies is given in the next chapter. In addition, I also referred to
two books in English written B.V. Kamesvara Iyer. Further, more contemporary literature on
Sandhyavandanam was also studied. All the references are included in the Booklet. I will be
honored to share the source of these references to the desiring readers. I must express here my
unflinching gratitude to all the resources of literature available over internet and to those
dedicated persons who selflessly uploaded them for public use.

I have been benefited by the constructive comments from many literati whom I approached. I
am indebted to Sarvasri Karanam Vasudeva Rao, Ravindranath, Appasesha Sastri, Venugopala
Sharma, Hanumantha Rao, Pillalamarri Hanumantha Rao, Girish Kumar, V.V.S. Rama Rao, N.
Subramanyam, Krishnmachari Raghuraman, Venkatarama Venugopal, P.R. Vasudeva Rao,
Natesan Ramamoorthy, Sripada Satyanarayana, Sankaranarayanan, Jayaraman Arunachalam
and V.S.Rama Rao who were kind enough to let their knowledge and wisdom help me in the
compilation of the Booklet.

No words can express my gratitude to them. Namaskaram Ishta Devataarpanamastu

The six Sandhyavandana Bhashyas mentioned at refence six above are excellent
compendiums on understanding all aspects of Sandhyavandanam. Except for Bhashyas by
Madhvacharya (dated 1776 AD) and Srikrishna Pandita (dated 1676 AD), publication dates of
other Bhashyas has not been mentioned in the compendium. However, Madhvacharya’s
Bhashyam acknowledges that the text in the Bhashyam was based on Sayanacharya’s
exposition on Sandhyavandanam. Majority of Bhashyams deals with Taittiriya
Sandhyavandanam. While Bhashyas by Madhvacharya and Srikrishna Pandita are detailed
expositions, other Bhashyas are concise and deal with only the main aspects of
Sandhyavandanam. From this we may venture to assume that they could be still older and we
may be able to discern the ab-initio structure of Sandhyavandanam. Bhashyas by
Madhvacharya and Srikrishna Pandita include not only the relevance of Sandhyavandanam but
also detailed procedures for performing the preliminaries to Sandhyavandanam such as
Achamanam, Pranayamam, Marjanam etc. For a discerning reader with inquisitive mind these
two are indeed troves.

Taittiriya Sandhyabhashyam by Bhattoji Dikshitha attempted to give a sequence to

Sandhyavandanam kriya and also the Mantras to be chanted. The procedure is as follows:
Achamanam, Pranayamam, Sankalpam, Marjanam, Jalabhimantranam
(Apamprasanam), Punarmarjanam, Argya Pradanam, Asavadityobrahma sloka,
Gayatri Avahanam, Pranayamam, Gayatri Japam, Surypasthanam, Digdevata
Namaskaram, Gayatri Udyapanam.
It is also interesting to note that no additional slokas or extra Kriyas are mentioned in the
procedure. It could be the basis for our discussion further.in this book.

Another important and significant observation is that only in the Sandhyavandana Bhashyam by
Khandaraja Dikshitha, different Mantras are included for Upasthanam. These are Mantras 6 to 9
of the 59th Suktam of 3rd Mandalam of Rigveda. The Mantras are:
मय चषणीधत
ृ ोवो दे वय सानस यP
ु नं Aच4वतमम ्
अभ यो मKहना Kदवं मो बभव
ू सZथाः अभ 4वोभः पAृ थवीम ्
माय dbच येमरे जनां अभिEटशवसे स दे वािIवGवािIबभत
मो दे वEे वायष
ु ु जनाय व
ृ तबKहषे इष इEटfता अकः
All other Bhashyams included 6th Mantra followed by the first two Mantras of the 59th Suktam.
It is intriguing as to why this has not been mentioned by anyone. Except for this and additional
slokas towards end, Bhashyas of Khandaraja Dikshitha and Bhattoji Dikshitha are similar.

Sayanacharyas’s Bhashyam starts with Siva stuthi whereas Madhvacharya’s Bhashyam starts
with Vishnu (Krishna) stuthi.

It is again emphasised that the purpose of this Booklet is not to comment or pass any value
judgement on the practices of Sandhyavandanam that are currently followed by individuals as
per their traditions and customs but only to bring out how, over ages, the procedure of
Sandhyavandanam underwent modifications.
2. Things to know in Sandhyavandanam
1. Vedas: All the Vedas are “Apaurusheyas” meaning they are not of human origin. They
were handed to humans directly through the voice of God Almighty, the Absolute one.
Knowledge of these Mantras and their deities were made known to various Rishis.
These Rishis might have chanted the Mantras and the deities of those Mantras might
have appeared before them and blessed them. That is why these Rishis are called
Drashtas. Before chanting any Vedic mantra, it is incumbent to cite and meditate on the
attributes (Deity, Rishi and the Chandassu) of that Mantra and also the purpose to which
the Mantra is applied. The attribute Slokas are given in the beginning of Suktas in
Rigeveda.

2. During chanting of attribute Mantra, it is customary to perform the following: (i) when
Rishi’s name is taken, touch the head, do namaskar, (ii) when the name of the deity is
taken, touch the heart with right hand, and (iii) when the name of the Chandassu is
taken, touch the mouth with right hand fingers.

3. Gayatri Mahamantra: This is considered the holiest rik of all the Vedas. The Rishi
(Drashta) is Rishi Visvamitra and the Chandassu (Metre) is Gayatri of twenty-four
syllables. The Mantra Devata is also Goddess Gayatri. This Mantra is the tenth Mantra
in the fifth Anuvaka and 62nd Sukta in the 3rd Mandal of Rigveda. It is also found in
Taittiriya Aranyaka Chapter 10 Anuvaka 35. The complete Gayatri Mantra is as follows:
ॐ भःू । ॐ भव ु ः । ॐ वः । ॐ महः । ॐ जनः । ॐ तपः । ॐ स यं । These are called seven
hयाiती (sacred utterances) referring to the seven worlds above the earth (seven Urdhva
lokas). Metaphysically one may refer to these as the seven spheres of existence. The
seven urdhva lokas are (1) Bhulokam, (2) Bhuvarlokam, (3) Suvarlokam, (4)
Maharlokam, (5) Janalokam, (6) Tapolokam and (7) Satyalokam.

ॐ त स/वतव
ु र े Wयं । भगj दे वय धीमKह धीयो यो नः Zचोदयात ्।
ॐ आ पो8योतीरसोऽमत ृ ं CDम भभ
ु व
ु ःवरोम ्॥ (This is known as Gayatri Siro Mantram)
The Gayatri Mantra may be interpreted as follows: All the seven Urdhva Lokas have
their origins from the sacred utterance OM. They themselves are OM. We pay our
obeisance to that Ultimate One (Parabrahma) and meditate on His eternal glory and due
to whom the Nature and the entire Universe owe their existence. May His splendour and
effulgence stimulate our intellect and bestow upon us true knowledge. Gayatri Siro
Mantram, true its name highlights the essence of all Vedas in one word: That
imperishable Parabrhma, who pervades the Nature, all the basic Elements and the
entire Universe can be perceived as OM

4. The 2nd Anuvaka of 2nd Prapathaka of Taittiriya Aranyaka emphsises that the most
essential is the Gayatri Argya. Srikrishna Pandita, in his Sandhyavandana Bhashyam
also reiterates that Gayatri Arghyam, Gayatri Japam and Gayatri Upasthanam are the
three main Kriyas in Sandhyavandanam. All other Kriyas are just add-ons. Again, among
these three Gayatri Arghyam is the most important one and should always be performed
daily.
5. In ancient times, people used to offer Gayatri Arghyam, chant Gayatri Japa and perform
Gayatri Upasthanam standing in knee-deep water in rivers, streams or lakes. Now-a-
days the Kriya is being performed at homes. People sit cross legged (Padmasanam) and
carry out their rituals. As mentioned earlier, Sandhyavandana Kriya has undergone
many modifications based on the customs, practices and the Sampradayas one follows.
In addition, in most of the cases, Gayatri Mudras, Anganyasa and Karanyasa and
Tarpana Kriyas have become a part of the whole exercise.

6. In Vedic times, Nature was being given utmost importance. The Sun, the Moon and the
five Basic Elements of nature namely Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space were being
treated as the visible deities bestowing their benevolence and blessings on all the living
beings. In Sandhyavandanam, basically these are worshipped. Over a period of time, as
the interpretative knowledge, wisdom and the fact that the actions of Nature, the Sun,
the Moon and the five Elements are periodic recurrences without fail, led to the belief of
existence of an Ultimate One (Parabrahma) under whose directive the entire Nature and
its Organs perform their duties. Man started offering his obeisance to this Parabrahma
through Nature, the Sun, the Moon and the five Basic Elements.

7. Proper time for performing Sandhyavandanam: Three Ghadiyas (1hr 12 min.) before the
Sunrise is ideal for morning ritual. Same quantum of time after the Sunset is ideal for
the evening ritual. If it is not possible, complete the ritual within six Ghadiyas (2 hrs 24
min.) after the Sunrise or the Sunset.

8. Achamanam: All the Bhashyas are very particular about the way Achamanam has to be
done. We should have the right palm in cow’s ear shape (Gokarna shape). Touch the
lower part of the first knuckle of middle finger with tip of the thumb. Fold the index finger
and press the the thumb. Open the other three fingers (middle, ring and the little fingers).
This gives Gokarna shape to the palm. Take only small quantity of water just enough to
dip a grain of pulse. Some other schools maintain that the word “Mash” in Sanskrit refers
to the line seen across the palm and the water just enough to immerse this line when
you form Gokarna shape is to be used for Achamanam This water is to sipped as
Brahma tirtham (explained later). Brahma tirtham should be sipped without making any
sound and without touching the upper lip. In Sandhyavandanam, we also treat our mouth
as a sacred homa Kunda. (sacrificial fire place). In order to keep the sacrificial offerings
(Waters) pure, we should see that the Waters do not touch the upper lip. Otherwise they
will no more be treated as holy but “contaminated.”

9. Types of Tirthams: There are four types of Tirthams: (i) Brahma Tirtham, (ii) Rishi
Tirtham, (iii) Deva Tirtham, and (iv) Pitru Tirtham.
If water flows from the lower part of the palm over the wrist it becomes Brahma
Tirtham.
On turning the palm towards left and If water is allowed to flow over the side of the
little finger it becomes Rishi Tirtham.
If water is allowed to flow over the four fingers, it becomes Deva Tirtham.
On turning the palm towards right and If water is allowed to flow over the space
between the thumb and the lower index finger, it becomes Pitru Tirtham.
During Sandhyavandanam, Achamanam should always be done as Brahma Tirtham. It
should not touch the area designated for Pitru Tirtham. It is possible only when we have
the right palm folded in Gokarna shape.
Any Tirtham which has to be taken in has to be Brahma Tirtham. All other Tirthams
should be offered but not taken in.

10. Types of Achamanams: There are three types of Achamanams. In Shroutachamanam,

mantras chanted for purification are Gayatri mantra and the three slokas used for
Marjanam in Sandhyavandanam. In Puranachamanam, the purification is done by
chanting the Keshava Namas. In Smrityachamanam, the purification is done without
chanting any mantras or Kashava Namas. In all the three the purification part is similar
(given below). Any of the three achamanams can be adopted in Sandhyavandanam.
Now-a-days Puranachamanam is widely practised. Puranachamanam should be
performed at the beginning and towards end of Sandhyavandanam. Elsewhere during
Sandhyavandanam, Achamanam may be done by simply reciting Keshava Namas.

11. Procedure for Puranachamanam: Chant the three following three Keshava Namas and
while chanting each Nama sip water from Brahma tirtha:
ॐ 4ी केशवाय वाहा । (sip water), ॐ 4ी नारायणाय वाहा । (sip water), ॐ 4ी माधवाय वाहा।
(sip water)
It is interesting to note that in the first Mantra of eleventh Anuvaka of 2nd Prapathaka
(Chapter) of Taitiriya Aranyaka, it is mentioned that one should cleanse his palms and
feet and then touch top of the head, eyes, nostrils, ears, and heart. Many of the texts it is
also mentioned that different parts of the body are touched while performing
Achamanam. (twice wiping the lips, sprinkle the feet, head, touch the different sensory
organs (ears, eyes, nostrils), crown of the head and navel). However, Madhvacharya’s
Sandhyavandana Bhashyam recommends the following:
Chant the following Namas and perform the Suddhi Kriya (cleansing) of the organs

12. Procedure for Pranayamam:

Reference to Pranyama is found in Mantra 9 of Chapter 2 in Svetasvatara Upanisad.
Pranayama or the control of the breath is regulating inhaling, exhaling and withholding of
breath, which helps to steady and concentrate the mind in the contemplation of
Brahman. Turn one’s mind inwards, close the right nostril (Ida) with the right thumb,
slowly breathe in through the left nostril (Pingala), hold it for a few seconds and then
breathe out through right nostril. Thus, Pranayama comprises three parts: Purakam,
Kumbhakam and Rechakam. Breathing air through nostrils is Purakam, retaining the air
breathed in inside the lungs for certain amount of time is Kumbhakam. Breathing out the
air through nostril is Rechakam. In Pranayamam, this breathing sequence of Purakam,
Kumbhakam and Rechakam is performed in the ratio, respectively of 1: 4: 1. In majority
of Sandhyavandanam books I referred, it is mentioned that Purakam is to be done
through left nostril and Rechakam, through right nostril. There is no mention of reversing
the sequence starting from right nostril and ending with left nostril. It is best to leave to
the individuals to adopt whichever way he desires to do Pranayamam.
If the nostril is closed with all the fingers, it is called Pranava Mudra and Pranayamam in
this way should be done by married people. Closing the right nostril with thumb and
closing the left nostril with little and ring fingers is called Omkara Mudra and
Pranayamam in this way should be done by unmarried people.
While performing Purakam each time, one of the following seven Vyahrthis (ॐ भःू । ॐ
भव
ु ः । ॐ वः । ॐ महः । ॐ जनः । ॐ तपः । ॐ स यं ।) should be chanted in sequence.
Towards end Gayatri Mantra should be chanted.
ॐ त स/वतवु र े Wयं । भगj दे वय । धीमKह । धीयो यो नः । Zचोदयात ्।
ॐ आ पो8योतीरसोऽमत
ृ ं CDम भभ
ु व
ु ःवरोम ्॥

13. Sankalpam
For any prayer or performance of any sacred work whether it is Sandhyavandanam,
puja, yagna, or any ritual performed by any individual this customary Sankalpam has to
be narrated. It denotes the commitment and determination of the performer to rightfully
and sincerely perform such sacred rituals. The determination and resolution of the
person is demonstrated by holding right palm over the left palm and keeping them on the
right thigh and uttering the mantra: ममोपाa समतद>ु रतयवारा 4ीपरमेGवर Zी यथm Zातः
संQयां क>रEये। Over a period of time, as happened to many other rituals, additional
Mantras were added for Sankalpam also. These refer to indicating coordinates of one’s
place at the time of Sandhyavandanam and the time of performing. It is believed that
the original Sankalpa Mantra is for overall upliftment whereas the second one is
specifically meant for receiving some material benefits out of the Kriya that is being
performed.
It may be seen that the sequence of Achamanam, Pranayama and Sankalpam makes
logical sense. First one cleanses himself and internal organs by Achamanam,
concentrates on Parabrahma by Pranayama and resolves to do the expected chore by
taking Sankalpam.

14. All the three Kriyas namely Gayatri Arghyam, Gayatri Japam and Gayatri Upsthananm
should be preceded by Achamanam, Pranayamam and Sankalpam.

15. Two kinds of divisions are in vogue for Rgveda. In the first, the Samhita is divided into 8
Ashtakas. Each Ashtaka is again subdivided into Vargas, containing mantras. A total of
10,552 mantras are spread over 2,024 Vargas, included in the 64 Adhyayas of the 8
Ashtakas. In the second division, the Samhita has been divided into 10 Mandalas. The
Mandalas are sub-divided into 85 Anuvakas containing 1028 Suktas and the Suktas into
mantras, the number being same. As the Suktas are sequentially numbered in each
Mandala, usually Anuvaka is not mentioned for the reference of a Mantra of the Rigveda
For example RV 3-16-7 means the seventh Mantra of the sixteenth Sukta of the third
Mandala of the Rigveda. This method of reference in followed in this Book also.

16. The Taittiriya-sakha (Krishna Yajurveda branch) is divided into 4 sections, namely, the
Samhita, the Brahmana, the Aranyaka and the Upanishad. The Taittiriya-samhita
contains 7 Kandas subdivided into 44 Prasnas or Prapathakas. Each Anuvaka contains
Yajus or Mantras. The Brahmana consists of 3 Ashtakas (28 prasnas) including the
Kathaka (3 prasnas). The Aranyaka has 10 Prasnas (or Prapathkas). Each Prasna inturn
is divided in to Anuvakas which contain Yajus or mantras. The Taittiriya-upanishad and
the Maha-narayana-upanishad (Yajniki) are part of the Taittiriya-aranyaka. Referencing
of Mantras in Taittiriya Aranyaka . for example, T.A. 10-1-5 refers to 5th Mantra in the
first Anuvaka of 10th Prapathaka in Taittiriya Aranyaka. T.S. 3-2-5 means 5th Mantra of
2nd Anuvaka in 3rd Kanda of Taittiriya Samhita. This type of referencing is followed in
this Book also.

17. The Samaveda is divided into two parts: Purva-archika (Chanda-archika) and Uttara-
archika. The former contains 650 rks and the latter 1225, making a total of 1875. All
these rks, except 99 of them, are same as the Rgveda mantras. The Purva-archika is
divided into 7 Prapathakas. Each Prapathaka contains 10 khandas (dasati). Uttara-
archika is divided into 9 Prapathakas and 22 Adhyayas. Adhyayas are further divided
into khandas. Rigveda mantras set to music become Sama-gana. The basis for Prakrti-
samas are Purva-archika and that of Uha-ganas are Uttara-archika. Among the four
Vedas, the Samaveda is regarded as the foremost. In the Bhagavadgata, where Lord
Krishna has declared “Among the Vedas I am Samaveda”-Vedanam Samavedosmi.
3. Ab initio procedure for Sandhyavandanam – Moola
Mantras with meaning
The sequence of steps in Sandhyavandanam is as follows:

First part of Sandhyavandanam: Argya pradanam

1. आचमनम ् (Achamanam)
We should have the right palm in cow’s ear shape (Gokarna shape). Touch the lower part of the
first knuckle of middle finger with tip of the thumb. Press the thumb with the index finger. Open
the other three fingers (middle, ring and the little fingers). This gives Gokarna shape to the palm.
Take only small quantity of water just enough to dip a grain of pulse. Chant the three following
three Keshava Namas and while chanting each Nama sip water from Brahma tirtha.
ॐ 4ी केशवाय वाहा । (sip water), ॐ 4ी नारायणाय वाहा । (sip water), ॐ 4ी माधवाय वाहा। (sip
water).
Brahma tirtham should be sipped without making any sound and without touching the upper lip
(If water flows water from the lower part of the palm over the wrist it becomes Brahma Tirtham.)
Chant ॐ 4ी गो/वIदाय नमः । and while chanting, simultaneously take water on the right palm and
pour out as Deva Tirtham into a plate.
Chant the remaining Keshava Namas and perform the cleansing of different organs of the body
(twice wiping the lips, sprinkle the feet, head, touch the different sensory organs (ears, eyes,
nostrils), crown of the head and navel).

2. ाणायामम ् (Pranayamam)
ॐ Zणवय परCDम ऋ/षः । (touch the head and then do Namaskara Mudra) परमा मा दे वता । (touch
the heart) दे वी गायी छIदः । (touch the mouth) Zाणायामे /वनयोगः ॥
(As the Pranayama Mantra is Gayatri Mantram, we recite the attributes for this Mantra namely
Rishi is Parbrahma as the Pranava OM, Deity is Goddess Gayatri and the Metre is Gayatri and
the purpose is for Pranayama.
Pranayama comprises three parts: Purakam, Kumbhakam and Rechakam. Breathing air
through nostrils is Purakam, retaining the air breathed in inside the lungs for certain amount of
time is Kumbhakam. Breathing out the air through nostril is Rechakam. In Pranayamam, this
breathing sequence of Purakam, Kumbhakam and Rechakam is performed in the ratio,
respectively of 1: 4: 1. In majority of Sandhyavandanam books I referred, it is mentioned that
Purakam is to be done through left nostril and Rechakam, through right nostril. (A married man
should hold the nose in all His five fingers while performing this and bachelors and saints/seers
should hold through three fingers i.e. index, thumb and small fingers.)
For each step of Pranayamam, chant the seven Vyahrithis (ॐ भःू । ॐ भव ु ः । ॐ वः । ॐ महः । ॐ
जनः । ॐ तपः । ॐ स यं ।) one by one. Then recite the Gayatri Mantra:
ॐ त स/वतव
ु र े Wयं । भगj दे वय धीमKह धीयो यो नः Zचोदयात ्। ॐ आ पो8योतीरसोऽमत
ृ ं CDम भभ
ु व
ु ःवरोम ्॥

3. सकपः (Sankalpam)
Hold right palm over the left palm and keep them on the right thigh and utter the following
Mantra and chant the following Mantra:
ममोपाa समत द>ु रततयवारा 4ी परमेGवर Zी यथm Zातः संQयामप
ु ाशEये ।
(To get rid of all the sins and other unholy things done by me and to seek the benevolence of
Paramesvara, I perform Sandhyavandanam.)

4. माजनम ्
Marjanam means a type of external cleansing to prepare oneself to proceed with
Sandhyavandanam. Chant the attribute Mantra for Marjanam:

अपो दे वता । (touch the heart) गायी छIदः । (touch the mouth) माजने /वनयोगः ॥
(For these three Apohisteti Mantras, Sindhdvipa is Rishi, Sacred Waters is the deity personified
and Chandassu is Gayatri and the purpose is to perform Marjanam.)
Chant the following Mantras and sprinkle water over head nine times either with Darbha (Kusa
grass) or with ring finger:
ॐ आ पोKहEठा मयो भव ु ः । ता न ऊजF दधातन । महे रणाय चसे ।
योवः शवतमो रसः । तय भाजयते हनः । उशती>रव मातरः ।
तमा अरlग मामवः यय याय िजIवथ । आ पोजनयथा च नः ॥
These are the first three Mantras in the nineth Suktam of tenth Mandala of Rigveda. They are
also found in the 11th and 12th Mantras of first Anuvakam in the tenth Prapathaka (chapter) of
Taittiriya Aranyaka.
(Meaning: Oh, sacred Water Deities, you are the source of our comforts and holy deeds. Bless
and grant us food and nutrition to give us happiness and strength to our sensory organs. Just
like the doting mothers feed their infants with breast milk, bestow us with all the essences
needed for happiness and contentment. Continue to bless us with your infinite benevolence and
offspring.)

Parabrahma helping us cross the ocean of life. This Mantra is also the first Mantra in Sri Durga

5. Typical Sandhyavandanam Kriyas practised at our homes

It has been repatedly mentioned many times that the Sandhyavandanam Kriya underwent
umpteen modifications to adopt one’s customs, traditions and beliefs. Additional slokas are
included and the the whole Kriya per se became quite long. In the following pages, as attempt
has been made to include typical Sandhyavandana Kriyas practised in individual homes. It
should be emphasised that the procedure is given is not and should not be treated as the
regerence procedure. Individuals are advised to follow their own procedures they have been
practising at their homes.

Rigveda Sandhyavandanam procedure is followed by the compiler.

In Taittiriya (Krishna Yajurveda) Sandhyavandanm, some people perofrm Achamanam chanting
all the 24 Keshava Namas starting wioth Keshavaya namah. Some others chant only with 14
namas starting from Achyutayanamah. All the six Bhashyams referered above have
Achamanam starting from Keshavayanamah.
Typical Yajurveda Sandhyavandanam procedure given here includes both achamans and the
readers may identify theirs accordingly.
I could not get enough literature on Samaveda Sandhyavandanam. What is given is based on
two references 12 and 13.

(Samavediya Sandhyavandanam)

Note: I could not access enough literature on Samavediya Sandhyavandanam. Whatever

literature I could access on internet is more or less similar in contents. Thus, one could see
homogeneity of contents. However, I did observe some minor changes in the sequence. Some
start and end the Sandhyavandana Kriya Sativika Tyagam. Also, some chant Yama Vandanam
and Harihara Vandanam before Suryavandanam.

Sit in Padmasana facing east during pratha sandhya, facing north during madyannikam and
facing west during sayam sandhya.
