Plot: Horatio believes that the Ghost’s appearance will bring strange events to Denmark. Character: Horatio is portrayed here as a well educated man (scholar) as he has knowledge of the Elizabethan Beliefs. Device: Foreshadow: Horatio believes that something will happen in the future. Used to show Elizabethan beliefs.
2.) Speaker: King Claudius
Plot: King Claudius is trying to make a good impression as he is conducting court business for the first time at his coronation. Character: Deceiving, he’s very good at hiding his true character/ Shows his empathetic and sympathetic side. Device: Antithesis: Contrast between the sad times of Old King Hamlet’s death and the joy of marriage that Claudius and Gertrude went through.
3.) Speaker: Hamlet
Plot: King Claudius asked why Hamlet was still feeling gloomy, while Hamlet says that he’s the complete opposite. Character: King Claudius shows caring for Hamlet. Hamlet is smart with his choice of words. Device: Pun: shows that Hamlet is being sarcastic about him being happy, as he really feels that King Claudius is now too closely related to him.

Plot: Hamlet is talking about how he disapproves of his mother’s marriage by comparing his parents to an unweeded garden. Character: Shows how much Hamlet cared about his father and how much he loves him. Device: Plant and nature imagery: used to compare Hamlet’s feelings of his parents. 5.) Speaker: Laertes Plot: Laertes warns his sister, Ophelia, not to get too close to Hamlet and risk losing her virginity. Character: Laertes cares about his sister, shows his caring and protective side. Shows that Ophelia is a typical teenager wanting to rebel against what is expected of them. Device: Nature Imagery: gives an example to warn Ophelia about what can happen with her relationship with Hamlet.

Plot: Polonius is giving advice to Laertes, he’s trying to prevent Laertes from making him look bad. Telling him to dress appropriately because Polonius believes the apparel often determines the man. Character: Polonius is a selfish man, even when he gives advice to his son he’s really only trying to benefit himself. Device:

Plot: Hamlet is unsure of the intend of the ghost, whether he was sent for good or evil. Character: Hamlet is smart and doubtful, he doesn’t jump to conclusions, instead he asks himself about the true intend of the ghost. Device: Antitheses: to show that Hamlet is puzzled about the ghost being either good or evil.
8.) Speaker: Marcellus
Plot: Marcellus believes that the ghost appearing is to reveal something bad that has happened in the state of Denmark. Character: Marcellus is suspicious Device: Imagery of Decay: portraying that Denmark itself is slowly wilting. 9.) Speaker: Hamlet Plot: Hamlet explains to his father’s ghost that from this point on, his sole purpose will be for retribution of his father’s murder. Character: Device:
