EU REGULATIONS
Recreational Marine
Directive 94/25/EC

This directive applies to new propulsion engines installed in recreational

craft from 2.5 to 24 m hull lengths and became effective 1 January 2006.
The following Caterpillar propulsion engines are certified: 3126B, C7, C9,
3196 and C12, 3400C, 3406E, 3412D, 3412E, C15, C18, and C32.

1
RATING DEFINITIONS
Caterpillar marine engines are developed to perform to customer
expectations in various applications. An understanding of the vessel’s
intended use (load profile) allows the correct engine rating to be
selected. The correct engine rating is more likely to provide the customer
with engines that have an acceptable life to overhaul and good engine
performance. Caterpillar marine engine ratings are determined by overall
load profile, operational hours per year, and time spent at full throttle.
Load Factor
The engine’s load profile is determined by calculating the amount of time
spent at various load levels. This information is then used to calculate the
amount of actual fuel consumed during those periods. Time spent idling,
maneuvering at low loads or in no-wake zones, cruising, and operating at
full throttle is all used to determine this profile (sometimes referred to as
“duty cycle”). Applications with high load profiles cause corresponding
engine ratings to be lower for a continuous operating speed, and
applications with low load profiles allow higher engine ratings.
Time at Full Throttle
Time at full throttle is a measurement of the time the engines are actually
operated at full load and speed. Stated typical time at full throttle is the
normal accumulation of time at full throttle during any operational period.
“A” ratings are developed to provide time at full throttle for 100 percent of
the operational time of the engines. “B” through “E” ratings list
correspondingly lower amounts of typical time at full throttle due to their
higher power ratings.
Operational Hours per Year
Typical hours of operation per year are stated as recommended, or
normal in their applications. If the engine rating is selected correctly for
the application, exceeding the stated typical hours of operation per year
will have no effect on engine warranty, but may cause engine overhaul
life to be reached sooner than anticipated.
High Performance — E Rating
This rating is designed for use in planing hull vessels, only. Engines with
this rating are used to accelerate the vessel to a planing condition and
establish the vessel’s cruise speed.
Load Profile: Typically, the average load profile for engines with this
rating is approximately 30%.
Operational Hours per Year: Vessels using this rating normally operate
from 100 to 1000 hours per year, depending on vessel size, use, and length
of boating season
Time at Full Throttle: “E” rated engines in typical pleasure craft
applications normally record less than 1% - 2% of operational time at full
throttle. Caterpillar develops engines with this rating to operate for up to
8% of the time at full throttle. Exceeding this amount of time at full throttle
operation will cause engine overhaul life to be reached sooner than
anticipated, but will not affect warranty. Please refer to the Marine
Engine Selection Guide (LEDM3457) for all other rating definitions.

ACERT ™ TECHNOLOGY
Consistent with their long history of technological innovation and
progress, Caterpillar is continually investing in research and
development. Over $500 million has been invested to meet today’s
stringent emissions regulations and to offer the market a reliable product
with the performance that meets the needs of customers worldwide. This
latest evolution in the Caterpillar engine line is the introduction of
ACERT™ Technology. Caterpillar draws on a wide range of product
experience to develop these basic engine system innovations. As new
engines are developed, specific ACERT Technology components are
incorporated to reduce smoke and noise, provide better performance, and
increase fuel efficiency. The four fundamental components are:
Electronics
• The newest Cat® ADEM™ electronic control module and proprietary
software, developed specifically for each power rating and emissions
level, allow ACERT engines to precisely control and shape fuel delivery,
air management, and all other engine functions.
Fuel Delivery
• Multiple fuel injection delivery introduces fuel into the combustion
chamber in a series of precisely timed “micro bursts.” This provides
maximum power and fuel efficiency with minimum emission levels.
Air Management
• Air management technologies such as cross flow cylinder heads,
wastegate turbochargers, even variable valve timing can be
incorporated to control combustion air, burn fuel more efficiently, and
enhance performance.
Combustion
• Combustion system design pulls the maximum amount of energy from
fuel delivery and applies this energy to the propeller or generator.
ACERT Technology combines proven systems with innovative new
technologies to enhance the combustion process to such a high degree
that it optimizes total engine performance while offering a highly effective
emissions reduction solution. Because ACERT Technology is primarily for
combustion, there is no external plumbing to clutter cramped engine
rooms. And when you specify an engine, components are included only
as needed, so you get a solution optimized for your application. In
applications where stringent emissions standards are in force, Caterpillar
engines with ACERT Technology deliver excellent performance,
efficiency, and durability.

ENGINE CONTROL AND
MONITORING SYSTEMS
For optimum performance and reliability these exclusive engine control
and monitoring systems are specifically designed for Caterpillar
electronic marine propulsion engines.
Messenger
Messenger is a compact engine
monitoring display that provides real-time
performance and operating information.
Messenger can display current engine
and transmission data, trip data, historical
data, and diagnostic information. All information is displayed on an LCD
screen. The illumination is excellent in all lighting conditions, adjustable
by user, and constant over the operating voltage range.

Marine Power Display

(MPD)
Cat Marine Power Display is
an innovative self-contained
engine monitoring and
display system that provides
the operator with engine
and transmission
information. The screen
layouts can be easily configured to suit individual format preferences. In
the event of an engine or transmission problem an audible alarm alerts
the operator and a text window with diagnostic information appears on
the screen. The high-resolution transflective screen improves readability
as ambient light conditions change.

Marine Analog Power Display (MAPD)

MAPD is an innovative system of electronically controlled analog

gauges that monitor engine operation, offering accuracy and
dependability with visual simplicity. Two sizes of gauges are available
with choices of gauge face colors and bezel finishes. All gauges are LED
backlighted and automatically calibrated. Up to 12 individual gauges or
the convenient MAPD panel with up to seven gauges can be easily
installed.

ENGINE CONTROL AND
MONITORING SYSTEMS cont.
Multi-Station Control System
(MSCS)
MSCS provides engine and
transmission control for single or
dual engine applications with up
to eight control stations installed
throughout the vessel. Control of
the engine and transmission can
be easily transferred from one
station to another. A fully
redundant backup system is included to ensure propulsion system
operation in the event of a failure to the primary control system. In
addition to the eight primary control stations, eight backup stations per
vessel can also be installed. Transmission shift logic contains anti-stall
strategy to prevent stalling the engine during quick shifting maneuvers.
Several control head options are available for convenience and to
coordinate with the vessel’s interior design.

WARRANTY
The standard warranty for non-revenue producing pleasure craft
applications is 24 months or 1000 hours (whichever occurs first) after
delivery to the first user for C7 propulsion engines and 24 months after
delivery to the first user for all other new propulsion engines. For 3056,
C1.5, C2.2, and C4.4 generator sets the standard warranty is 24 months or
2000 hours (whichever occurs first) after delivery to the first user. Refer to
LEDM4671-02 for additional information.
