Ways of seeing is a series of episodes which draws the attention on several
topics, such as, how we perceive art in our daily lives, how the perception of
seeing art has changed in 20th century due to the invention of the camera,
questioning the advantages and disadvantages of technological advance-
ment, discussing about the mysterious aspects related to paintings which
according to him is deliberately created by art historians as an attempt to
create a significant distinction between the authentic work and the replica
and so on.
Art has become a daily part of our lives and as result we don’t put much
emphasis on it, but it was not so before the invention of the camera.The in-

relatability and comfort but it has somehow diminished the individuality, the

experience and the consolidated meaning of it. So, how to protect it became
a big question. John Berger, highlights how creating mystery has helped
maintaining the value of the original piece of art, which might be misleading.
Not only that, he identifies aspects that affect affects the art we see, such as
background music and information we see beside, before or after it.
The video comes out to be strong and persuasive, because of the tech-
niques it uses, such as, using humor, using examples to prove the point, the
setting and so on. In a border picture the clip encourages the viewer to think
and to question each and every aspect, before believing in something.
