Figure 1: Logo of Pizza Hut Malaysia

Pizza Hut is an American restaurant chain and international franchise which was founded
in 1958 in Wichita, Kansas. The company is known for its Italian American cuisine menu,
including pizza and pasta, as well as their side dishes and desserts. Pizza Hut has approximately
18,703 restaurants worldwide as of early 2020, making it the world’s largest pizza chain in terms
of locations. It is a subsidiary of Yum! Brands, Inc., one of the world’s largest restaurant
companies.

Pizza Hut Restaurants Sdn. Bhd. is a company based in Malaysia with its headquarter
office in Petaling Jaya. The enterprise currently operates in the Food Services and Drinking
Places sector. It was established on January 25, 1984. In 2017, the company reported a net sales
revenue increase of 11.5%. Its’ total assets recorded a growth of 13.1%. In 2017, Pizza Hut
Restaurants Sdn. Bhd.’s net profit margin increased by 2.26%.

In Malaysia, Pizza Hut began its operations in Malaysia on 19th May 1982 with the
opening of its first outlet at Yow Chuan Plaza, Kuala Lumpur. Cerebos, a Singapore based
company was the first owner. Cerebos had opened 29 outlets when it decided to sell the franchise
to KFC Holdings Malaysia Berhad in December 1995. The number of Pizza Hut outlets since
then has grown to 72 outlets today. Pizza Hut is projected to grow at a planned average rate of 10
new outlets per annum for the next 3 years.

10
Pizza Hut is traditionally a casual dine-in restaurant. The family meal concept has proven
to be popular among the Malaysians who placed importance of family ties with meals. Moreover,
the dine-in restaurant concept provides a better atmosphere to develop such ties, which is a
common practice of all the three major races of Malaysia. In order to meet intense competition in
the fast food industry, the delivery concept as a service strategy was introduced to maintain and
capture market share.

As the metropolitan lifestyle catches on, convenience is a priority for dual working
parents who still want to dine with their children in the comfort of their home but have no time to
prepare meals. Hence, the one-number call center system for pizza delivery was introduced in
1987. Pizza Hut Malaysia has recently upgraded its computerized order system to meet the
expected half an hour delivery time for an order. Pizza Hut Malaysia also caters for take-away,
as some of their more popular restaurants cannot meet the walk-in capacity. This strategy allows
for some diffusion of capacity limit.

Pizza Hut Malaysia is known for none other than its wide range of pizzas. The local
favourites are Beef Pepperoni, Hawaiian Chicken, and Super Supreme. Beef Pepperoni is
basically beef pepperoni with cheese, a commonly loved pizza in the world, whereas Hawaiian
Chicken is also one of the world’s preferred pizza consisting of chicken, cheese, and pineapple.

Pizza Hut Malaysia's success has been due to imaginative and innovative thinking in
continuously developing, marketing and promoting new pizza products with unique and
distinctive flavor, taste, style and appeal. Consistent introductions of various products and
promotions throughout the years have helped drive system wide sales and reinforced the chain's
reputation for 'serving the best pizzas under one roof'.

11
1.1 COMPANY’S BACKGROUND

The legacy of Pizza Hut began in 1958, when two college students from Wichita, Kansas,
Frank and Dan Carney, were approached by a family friend with the idea of opening a pizza
parlor or pizza restaurant. Although the concept was relatively new to many Americans at that
time, the brothers quickly saw the potential of this new enterprise. After borrowing $600 from
their mother, they purchased some second-hand equipment and rented a small building on a busy
intersection in their hometown. The result of their entrepreneurial efforts was the first Pizza Hut
restaurant, and the foundation for what would become the largest and most successful pizza
restaurant in the world.

Over the past four decades they built a reputation for excellence that has earned them the
respect of consumers and industry experts alike. Their products have been voted Number One in
countless consumer surveys nationwide and their accomplishments as an innovative business
leader have been cited by such respected publications as Restaurant Business, Fortune and The
Wall Street Journal. Pizza Hut franchisees, for example, exemplify the entrepreneurial spirit
which launched the system back in 1958. Through their interest and initiative, the Pizza Hut
system was able to develop new territories both in the United States and overseas. Tricon is the
parent company to two other segment leaders, Taco Bell and KFC. When combined with Pizza
Hut, these organizations make up the world’s largest restaurant group, with almost twice as many
units as McDonald’s. When it comes to leadership their proactive approach to product
development and marketing provides ample evidence of their abilities. Beginning with the
original thin crust pizza first served in 1958, Pizza Hut has made continuing efforts to refine
products, and to develop new products suited to every consumer taste. Today, five major
products, Pan Pizza, Thin ‘N Crispy pizza, Hand-Tossed style pizza, Stuffed Crust Pizza and The
Big New Yorker Pizza are loved by millions around the world and have become the standard by
which all others are judged.

12
In 1959, the 3rd Pizza Hut restaurant was set up as a Franchise which they open in
Topeka, Kansas. Their vision is to develop Franchise System which became a worldwide
successful marketing model. Pizza Hut was first mover towards international market and set up
first Pizza Hut outlets in Canada in 1968. Almost ten years later, Pizza Hut serving one million
customers in a week in their 310 locations. In 1970, Pizza Hut was put on the New York Stock
Exchange under ticker symbol PIZ. International Pizza Hut restaurant became 100 in number
while the total number of Pizza Hut reached 2000 in 1976.

In 1986, Pizza Hut introduced delivery service, something no other restaurant was doing.
Pizza Hut opened its 5000 unit in Dallas, Texas. Pizza Hut celebrated its 30 th anniversary with
more than 6000 units in 1988. In 19 th May 1982, Pizza Hut began its operations in Malaysia with
the opening of its first outlet. In 1996, Pizza Hut sales in the United States were over $5 million.
However, Pizza Hut’s market share has slowly matured because of intense competition from
their rivals which is Dominos, Little Caesar’s and Papa John's.

In the past, Pizza Hut has always had the first mover advantage. Their marketing strategy
in the past has always been to be first mover. One of their main strategies, which they still follow
today, is the diversification of the products they offer. Pizza Hut is always adding something new
to their menu, trying to reach new markets. Nowadays, Pizza Hut is the largest pizza restaurant
company in the world specializing in American style pizza. As of 2012, more than 6,000 Pizza
Hut restaurants in the United States, and more than 30,000 store locations which is 30,190
restaurants in 94 countries and territories around the world. Employing more than 300,000
people and YUM! is the parents of company of Pizza Hut. Nowadays they serve different style
of pizza along with side dishes including mushrooms soup, pasta, chicken wings, breadsticks and
garlic bread.

13
Building a leading pizza company has required relentless innovation, commitment to
quality and dedication to customer service and value. Pizza Hut had started their business in long
time ago and it already brings into history. Pizza Hut began its operation in Malaysia on 19th
May 1982 with opening of its first outlet at Yow Chuan Plaza, Kuala Lumpur. Now majority of
the consumer knows Pizza Hut as it already builds its name in the business industry where even a
5 years old kid knows how to make an order in Pizza Hut’s Restaurant. Pizza Hut then
introduced the online website delivery service, PHD or also known as Pizza Hut Delivery Sdn
Bhd acknowledge and respects the privacy of individuals. This policy is to reduce the customers’
time in making orders and creating conveniences for the customers. This policy also covers all
the personal information that PHD hold and sets out the way in which PHD will use, manage and
protect personal information when customer visits any of Pizza Hut websites or stores. It also
gives the privilege to deliver the orders within 30 minutes or less to the specific address being
registered.

14
PIZZA HUT’S LOGO

2010 – 2014

The history of the Pizza Hut logo from the simple red wordmark introduced in 1955. As
soon as the restaurant chain started operation, it unveiled an emblem with the mascot Pete in a
yellow hat and apron. The history of the “hut” design goes back to 1967. Originally, the red roof
looked simpler than now. It was accompanied by a wordmark in a sans-serif type. In February
2010, the "red roof" design was given a glossy look, and the script was modified. This logo was
still used at some locations until the end of 2015 . Instead of the sans-serif type, the new
wordmark featured a more intricate script font. Also, the “roof” was made asymmetrical. In
addition to this, the Pizza Hut logo included a yellow line underneath the insignia. Among the
most noticeable changes was also the green dot above the letter “i”. In the standard version, the
red roof appeared above the wordmark, but it could also be placed on the right side. Typically,
the wordmark was given against the white background, but it could also include black
background.

15
Feb 2014 – Nov 2014

In February 2014, the yellow stripe at the bottom of the wordmark and the green dot on
the "i" in "Pizza" were dropped from the logo, the wordmark was tilted and moved down further
from the "red roof" design. This logo is still used in some countries.

2014 – Present

In November 2014, Pizza Hut announced a major change to their menu and the look of
their restaurants. They also announced a new logo and box design, which were launched on
November 19. The logo consists of the short-lived logo in white, placed on a red circle drawn
much akin to a brush stroke. The red circle also, appropriately, looks like tomato sauce being
spread around on a pizza. On boxes, a variant which has only the roof inside the circle is used.
Despite being replaced with the 1975 logo on advertising, this logo is also still being used on
most locations, as well as the website and app.

16
MISSION

Pizza Hut’s mission statement is “to take pride in making the perfect pizza while
providing courteous, helpful service at all times, striving to have every customer say that they
plan to be back.” “Take pride in making the perfect pizza” is an indication that Pizza Hut wants
to stand out from other pizzerias. It harkens back to the idea that fresh, local ingredients will
create interest in the brand naturally. “Providing courteous, helpful service at all times” reflects a
desire by the brand to help customers enjoy their dining experience in every way possible. An
internal passion for pizza gets inferred from these words so that each slice reflects the pride of
the brand. “That they plan to be back” shows that the goal of Pizza Hut is to focus on repetitive
business with every action taken. This component reflects the difference in marketing costs that
companies face when targeted new customers versus repeat consumers.

In addition, Pizza Hut has been coming a long way since then with almost 400 outlets
nationwide, and they have stayed true to our commitment of bringing smiles to Malaysian
customers through freshly baked pizza. Now they are strengthening the brand for their next
chapter of growth and everything we do this year is focused on two words: “Easy” and “Better.”
Pizza Hut Malaysia’s refreshed brand mission is to make it easy for consumers to get a better
pizza and that is their focus. “Easy” means easy to order, quick to arrive and affordable so more
people can enjoy their pizzas. “Better” speaks to their passion to deliver a quality product, and a
fantastic experience.

VISION

The vision statement of Pizza Hut is “to improve the well-being of our customers,
community, and people connected to our enterprise.” Pizza Hut focuses on three critical
strategies to accomplish this goal. It works to become the best employer for people in each
community. Then the company strives to offer what it calls “optional excellence” to customers in
each restaurant, take-out, or delivery scenario. That means the brand looks for ways to encourage
employees to over-deliver on each order in some way. Then Pizza Hut encourages each franchise
owner to achieve enduring profits by looking for ways to innovate every day. Without new
research and development investments, there is no way to make the desired improvements.

17

Pizza Hut’s major competitors such as Domino’s Pizza, Papa John’s Pizza and Little Caesars, all
sold Coca Cola products. However, since Pepsi’s divestment of its restaurant business, both Papa
John’s (in 2012) and Little Caesars (in 2007) later switched to Pepsi product themselves.

Pizza Hut is a casual dine-in restaurant traditionally but then the delivery concept as a
service strategy was introduced to maintain market share. Pizza Hut Malaysia also caters for

strategy allows for some diffusion of capacity limit. Pizza Hut is to develop the best product with
the resources available. Pizza Hut sells pizzas in four different sizes which are personal (an

20
small size. A variety of toppings are available, plus “specialty” styles, including Meat Lovers,
Pepperoni Lover, Cheese Lover, Veggie Lover, Double Cheese, Supreme and Super Supreme.

Pan Pizza was launched nationally in 1980. More than twenty years later, their customers love it
so much that nearly every other pizza that they are selling is a Pan Pizza. The pan pizza has a
thicker crust than most other commercially available pizzas. Pizza Hut also introduced Hand
Stretched Pizza and Stuffed Crust Pizza instead of Pan Pizza for the selection of pizza crust. Pan
Pizza can be described as crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and their signature dough
recipe baked in a deep pan, Hand Stretched Pizza described as a thinner and lighter crust to bring
out the full flavour of the toppings meanwhile the Stuffed Crust Pizza can be described as a crust
filled with Mozzarella cheese baked for the cheese lover. Therefore, their products have helped
them to retain their customers and to increase them. This encourages the customers to visit Pizza
Hut rather than going elsewhere.

Figure 4 : Nasi Lemak Pizza

As Pizza Hut has to boost its sales in the existing markets, so the new food products are
introduced in all branches line-by-line because all branches are operated in co-operation with one

for just RM10, and the large pizza for just RM15. These prices are way below average Malaysian
Western foods, making Pizza Hut Malaysia a preferred choice for some.

94 countries with more than 11,000 franchises all around the world. Moreover, it is a wholly

efficient allocation of duties with due credit being given to all its employees. Pizza Hut
managements all across the world through their proper initiative and interest have constantly
been able to develop new territories in US and overseas and further expand exponentially.

Pizza Hut Malaysia has some hierarchy structure of management team in their

follows the retirement of Datuk Seri Mohamed Kamil, who left on March 31,2020. The

1.5 ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE

Pizza Hut Malaysia employs a centralized top management at the strategic level that
deals with suppliers, franchising terms and business planning. However, at the operational level,
a decentralized style is adopted where the restaurant managers and operators are empowered to
carry out the duties and responsibilities of providing high standards of service, product quality
and cleanliness of the outlet as the major challenge of the job.

Between these two levels are a team of managerial integrators who travel widely to the
outlets countrywide to ensure policies and operational procedures of upkeeping the outlets are
adhered to. This team provides the relevant support to ensure launches of new recipes and sales
promotions are carried out smoothly nationwide simultaneously. Pizza Hut Malaysia achieves
this by Forging Excellence Through Talented People.

Training takes precedence where staff management is concerned. Excellent service and
product innovation came as a result of training and sharing the invaluable experience of teaching
and learning culture practiced in all Pizza Hut outlets. As a result, Pizza Hut Malaysia organizes
an Annual Championship Competition to develop teamwork for each outlet as they aspire to
achieve the excellence standards expected in terms of hygiene, accuracy and speed of order
processing, general dining area cleanliness, hospitality and acceptable food quality. Normally a
team of experienced staff undertake the task of showing and putting to practice the work agenda
designed for the training of new recruits.

Pizza Hut brings their unique culture in a number of ways. For example, they established
YUM Leadership programs, where franchise and company leaders gather to learn how to lead
and build teams with common agenda. They also begun to start the values of accountability,
excellence and teamwork in their daily work.

2. COMPANY BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN THE CURRENT ERA

30
In this modern era, we are surrounded with many challenges and obstacles as our
durability measurement. Environment that keeps changing makes people hard to achieve their
objectives and goals as well as to reach their Key Performance Indicator (KPI). Nevertheless, a
good leader will always come out with their ideas and other alternative ways to overcome any
issues that may arise.

There are a few challenges that Pizza Hut deal in the current era like Covid-19 pandemic.
We do understand and fully aware of what is happening in Malaysia where we are now facing
with the COVID-19 pandemic. This pandemic gives a big impact on Pizza Hut itself where it
will damage the income and the customers. As a result, more than 350 restaurants of Pizza Hut
cannot operate freely like they used to where the customers need to self-collect their meals or
through delivery. This COVID-19 is a serious issue where people cannot move freely as it can
cause death. Therefore, Pizza Hut needs to come out with new idea to make sure that they will
keep persistent with the environment to maintain or improved their services to the customers.

Besides, intense compete with another Food & Beverage company. It is a fact that every
fast-food company will face the same thing and the concept the same goes to Pizza Hut.
Although Pizza Hut is one of the oldest food-chain in Malaysia, it also deals with other fast-food
companies such as McDonald's, KFC, Starbucks and Domino Pizza. Pizza Hut true rival is
Domino’s Pizza where they provide similar services with a good and efficient delivery. I also do
some research on most visited fast-food restaurant in Malaysia where statistics shows that KFC
lead by gain 82.81%, MCD 81.34%, Pizza Hut 57.18% and Domino’s 46.38% and this is why
Pizza Hut needs to up to date with the latest or new design on its menu to move along with the
environment. Pizza Hut needs to always maintain and improve its strategy to fulfill or exceed
customer needs.

Finally, technology. Technology becomes a need in any type of company in this modern
world. Pizza Hut itself need to upgrade its technology to move along with the environment
changes. As we all know that Pizza Hut is the oldest food-chain in Malaysia and their true
opponent is Domino’s Pizza but on 12 March 2018, Domino’s claim the title of largest pizza
chain by global revenue directly edging out its longtime rival, Pizza Hut. Pizza Hut also needs to
come out with new solutions to upgrading their technology to deal with its customers.

31
3. ETHICAL ISSUES THAT PIZZA HUT FACED

KFC and Pizza Hut stands with Malaysian’s front liner in their fight against COVID-19.

 KFC and Pizza Hut Malaysia are extending their support to Malaysia’s front liners and
the under-served communities during the unprecedented Covid-19 situation especially for
the brave front-liners who are putting their lives at risk and selflessly working around the
clock in the fight against Covid-19. FHC and Pizza Hut are committed to supporting
Malaysians through this tough period and will do all we can to continue our efforts to
ensure that the health and safety of our fellow Malaysians is not compromised, and
standards of hygiene are adhered to at all their outlets.

Both brands were pledging to serve meals to the community and lighten the hardship of the
nation throughout the period.

 The two fast foods franchise owner and operator, QSR Brands (M) Holdings Berhad said
with the recent extension of the Movement Control Order (MCO) to April 14. KFC and
Pizza Hut Malaysia had since delivered more than 10,780 meals to health workers,
firemen, policemen, media, and public service workers at the frontline as well as
university students and the under-served communities at more than 100 locations across
13 states in Malaysia. It is estimated that at least 20,000 meals will reach front-liners, as
well as the under-served individuals throughout the MCO period.

32
Partnered with Kechara Soup Kitchen

 In mobilizing this, KFC and Pizza Hut not only have engaged their riders to deliver food
but also partnered with Kechara Soup Kitchen to distribute food to the underprivileged
and homeless communities in Kuala Lumpur. Also, through QSR Brands’ long-standing
strategic partnerships with Federal Territories Islamic Religious Affairs Department;
Melaka Islamic Religious Council; Kedah Islamic Religious Council; Penang Tithe,
Penang Islamic Religious Council, Sabah Tithe Centre, Labuan Islamic Religious
Department, and Selangor Tithe Authority has seen these organizations joining hands to
distribute meals to front-liners and the underprivileged as a responsibility they hold
strongly to Malaysians who are in need. Nehchal Khanna, Managing Director, QSR
Brands (M) Holdings Bhd said the Covid-19 situation was a challenging time for all
Malaysians.

33
4. EFFORT TAKEN BY THE LEADERSHIP IN PIZZA HUT TO DEAL WITH
CHALLENGES THAT ARISE.

Pizza Hut has implemented a ‘contactless’ delivery or self-collect option during Movement
Control Order (MCO).

 Pizza Hut also taking extra measures to ensure the health and safety of its customer and
the workers. The Pizza Hut outlets will continue to serve customers via their Take-Away,
Drive-Thru and delivery services. Pizza Hut has also enhanced its stringent food safety
and hygiene standards further such as increase cleaning and sanitization frequently,
disinfecting of high touchpoint surfaces, provision of hand sanitizers, health checks, and
training of new procedures for all Pizza Hut team members.

Pizza Hut collaborated with Universal Music Malaysia.

 The organization of Pizza Hut also collaborated with Universal Music Malaysia to
introduce The Singing Pizza. The Singing Pizza turns a regular box into a music box that
plays music from an exclusive playlist and comes with vibrant collectible design.
Furthermore, a special QR code will be provided when consumers order their pizza either
on the pizza box or on the menu which allowing them to scan and listen to the exclusive
playlist while enjoying their pizzas. Through this new experience, Pizza Hut wants to
elevate Malaysian’s overall experience by injecting entertainment with each bite of pizza
they take. Music is a big part of Malaysian culture, and so with this campaign, two of
Malaysian passions, food and music are combined into one.

Introduced Pizza Hut brand-new oddest topping.

 Pizza Hut Malaysia also introduced its brand-new oddest topping which is durian cheese.
The creamy yet cheesy toppings with natural durian pulp matched perfectly with the

34
crispy crust. Pizza hut again comes out with this new idea to bring the brand awareness
back to the community.

New digital frontier for Pizza Hut

 Pizza Hut announced a new digital frontier for the brand to bring an easier and better
experience to Pizza Hut customers. Pizza Hut embarks on a new digital transformation
journey, starting with their website revamp, and now their mobile app and very first
digital concept store. Pizza Hut hopes to provide customers an entirely new digital
experience from the moment they walk into the store, order and enjoy their dining
experience. In the newly launched digital concept store, all Pizza Hut servers are
equipped with tablets for faster and better accurate orders to the kitchen.

35
5. PIZZA HUT’S CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND ITS IMPACT
TOWARDS SOCIETY.

What is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)?

 Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a self-regulating business model that helps a
company be socially accountable—to itself, its stakeholders, and the public. By
practicing corporate social responsibility, also called corporate citizenship, companies
can be conscious of the kind of impact they are having on all aspects of society, including
economic, social, and environmental. To engage in CSR means that, in the ordinary
course of business, a company is operating in ways that enhance society and the
environment, instead of contributing negatively to them.

Understanding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

 Corporate social responsibility is a broad concept that can take many forms depending on
the company and industry. Through CSR programs, philanthropy, and volunteer efforts,
businesses can benefit society while boosting their brands. As important as CSR is for the
community, it is equally valuable for a company. CSR activities can help forge a stronger
bond between employees and corporations; boost morale; and help both employees and
employers feel more connected with the world around them. For a company to be socially
responsible, it first needs to be accountable to itself and its shareholders. Often,
companies that adopt CSR programs have grown their business to the point where they
can give back to society. Thus, CSR is primarily a strategy of large corporations. Also,
the more visible and successful a corporation is, the more responsibility it has to set
standards of ethical behavior for its peers, competition, and industry.

36

the commonality of goals and values, as well as short term sustainable plans for

a) It helps Pizza Hut strengthen its integration of the CSV approach, and its various
aspects and channels. Working with UNGC allows the Pizza Hut to redesign and
improve its operations to ensure that all systems are ethically sound and

company has worked tirelessly to help provide communities with safe drinking water.

different African regions.

 Commitments at the Pizza Hut have helped shape its CSR and CSV approach based on
multiple trends from across the globe. These commitments have helped Pizza Hut
maintain focus in giving back to the community as well as in developing a more

Hut wants to fulfil and achieve in the following different aspects:

a) For individuals and families.

 Living healthier lives.
For families and communities, the CSV approach of Pizza Hut focuses on helping
individuals attain a balance between healthy nutrition and physical exercise as a

Pizza Hut works with the long-term aspiration of enhancing the lifestyles of
communities. The company plans to do it by sharing information regarding

39
nutritional facts, and by raising awareness of nutritional intake. The company
does this by not only making the nutritional value available for its own
manufactured products but also develops programs and information sharing
networks to help individuals learn about healthy eating and make informed
dietary decisions.
b) For communities.
 Rural development.
Pizza Hut works towards developing rural communities - especially where it is
operational and present. The company engages not only in employment creation
but also infrastructure development and education deployment programs to help
communities improve their living standards. Pizza Hut also conducts vocational
training programs frequently.

Pizza Hut also works towards inclusion through its diversity programs. The
company has designed programs and policies to ensure the inclusion of all
community groups in the employment cycle. In addition, the company also
conducts training and skill enhancement sessions for all community groups –
including disabled and special persons.

c) For the planet.

 Protecting water.
Pizza Hut understands the need for protecting water resources across the globe
and is also an active fighter for water preservation. With the high scarcity of clean
drinking water, Pizza Hut works and strives to provide communities with clean
drinking water through having installed filter plants.

PIZZA HUT LAUNCHESLONG - TERM CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

(CSR) PROGRAMME: ‘HUT TO HEART’BRINGING SMILES TO THE LARGER
COMMUNITY BY FOCUSING EFFORTS ON COMBATING CANCER.

KUALA LUMPUR, December 8, 2017 – Pizza Hut Malaysia (“Pizza Hut”), ‘Malaysia’ No. 1
pizza chain today announced the launch of its CSR initiative: ‘Hut to Heart’. The new long-term
initiative to champion social good will focus on fighting against Malaysia’s third leading cause
of premature fatality: cancer.

Speaking at the event, Ybhg. Datuk Mohamed Azahari Mohamed Kamil, Managing
Director of QSR Brands (M) Holdings Berhad shared, “Corporate Responsibility is something
that we’re very passionate about - it is not just about doing good for the community, but
empowering and equipping our community with skills to live life to the fullest. In hopes to
improving life and our communities, we stand by its mandate to carry out all CSR initiatives in
areas like sports & youth development, education, caring for the unfortunate community and
more.”

Mr. Merrill Pereyra, Chief Executive Officer (Restaurant Division), QSR Brands
(M) Holdings Bhd stated, “We chose cancer because of its prevalence in Malaysia, but also
because cancer affects not only the patient but reaches beyond and impacts the quality of life of
family and loved ones around them as well. The good news is that 30% to 50% of cancer
diseases can be prevented if detected early enough and that’s where we want to help, by
spreading awareness of early detection.”

‘Hut to Heart’ Initiative

The ‘Hut to Heart’ initiative aims to empower Malaysians to live a happier and healthier
cancer-free life shared with their loved ones and community. In order to do so, Pizza Hut is

41
helping in the fight to minimize cancer cases amongst Malaysians by investing into creating
greater awareness on preventive screenings and access to treatment.

Under the ‘Hut to Heart’ initiative, there are two identified projects, namely ‘SayangiMu’
in partnership with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) and a collaboration with
Hospital Sultan Aminah in Johor.

‘SayangiMu’ Programme, in Collaboration with NCSM

Understanding this challenge, Pizza Hut joined hands with NCSM to develop the
‘SayangiMu’ project, a 3-year partnership to minimize breast cancer by raising awareness on the
importance of preventive screenings amongst women while bridging the gap between rural areas
on accessibility to get preventive screenings.

Dr. Saunthari Somasundaram, President of NCSM said, “It is our mission to educate, care
and support Malaysians nationwide with the overarching vision of living in a world without
cancer. This is why we are excited to be working with Pizza Hut on the ‘SayangiMu’ project.
Together, we will collaborate to ensure that we reach out to as many Malaysians to achieve our
joint goal of educating people on the importance of preventive screenings.”

Pizza Hut will also embark on a donation drive to raise RM300,000 to provide fully
sponsored early detection screening to 1000 rural woman. This donation drive will be executed
through various platforms namely, a special Pizza Hut menu, spare change box located at Pizza
Hut outlets, and partnership with suppliers and vendors.

PIZZA HUT SURPASSES 100 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD DONATED THROUGH

HARVEST PROGRAM

PLANO, Texas, Jun. 26 /CSRwire/ - Pizza Hut and community-based hunger relief
organizations are celebrating a major milestone today: surpassing 100 million pounds of food
donated by Pizza Hut to feed those in need locally and across the country. Since 1992, Pizza Hut
restaurants have donated food to hunger relief organizations nationwide through its Harvest
Program, a program originated by the company 25 years ago in partnership with Food Donation
Connection (FDC).

42
Pizza Hut restaurants donate to 2,500 organizations nationwide with the help of FDC,
which links individual restaurants to hunger relief organizations. FDC was founded by former
Pizza Hut executive Bill Reighard, who saw a need to help the company reduce food waste.

“Pizza Hut led the charge,” said Reighard, who is FDC’s president. “It’s wonderful to
celebrate this milestone and to recognize that the Pizza Hut commitment still inspires other big
brands, as well as independent restaurants, to fight food waste and feed people in need in their
communities. Our work would not be possible without companies like Pizza Hut and the many
caring organizations like Dallas LIFE that participate in Harvest programs.”

Pizza Hut remains FDC’s largest donor partner. Its restaurants donate error pizzas, no-
show pizzas and breadsticks, plus surplus pizza and pasta. Local organizations collect the surplus
food for use in their community feeding programs.

Pizza Hut also participates in the Food Waste Reduction Alliance, an industry coalition
created by the National Restaurant Association and the Grocery Manufacturers Association. The
alliance works to reduce the amount of food waste generated, increase food donations to those in
need, and encourage recycling of unavoidable food waste to divert it from landfills.

43
6. CONCLUSION

As a conclusion, Pizza Hut is a great company in managing their productivity. Pizza Hut
is the largest pizza restaurant corporation in the globe according of both the number of outlets
and the percentage of market share that it has.

Pizza Hut company has a great demand in the market. There are many factors that affect
demand of Pizza Hut. Namely, price of other goods (substitute), customer preferences and tastes
and consumer income. Price of other goods affects demand of Pizza Hut. Consumer will find
other alternative if price of pizza in Pizza Hut increases. Thus, demand of Pizza hut decreases.
Secondly, customer preferences and tastes also affect demand of Pizza Hut. If Pizza Hut couldn't
satisfy consumer tastes, the demand of pizza Hut will drop as consumer will find another
alternative that satisfy them. Next factors that affect demand of Pizza Hut is consumer income.
Other things being equal, when income increases, consumer’s demand for more goods and
services will increase. Thus, when consumer income increase, the demand for Pizza Hut will also
increases. Taxation also affects demand of Pizza Hut. The higher the taxes that charged in Pizza
Hut, the lower the purchasing power of consumer. Thus, this decreases the demand for Pizza
Hut.

Pizza Hut tends to have an elastic demand. Elastic demand happens when there is a small
change in percentage of price of a product will lead to a larger percentage change in quantity
demanded. As a prove, consumer will not consume Pizza Hut if the price increases. Consumer
will try to find another alternative. Therefore, it decreases demand of Pizza Hut.

It is clearly shown that from the survey that Pizza Hut has many loyal customers. This is
proved when the survey shows that customer satisfaction is at the good parameter for quality,
price, store, ambiance and service. This also can be proved when 11 out of 14 people agree that

44
eating Pizza Hut is value for money. The suggestions we can provide to Pizza Hut in improving
their services are to include more new dishes to their menu so that customers would have more
choices to choose. Pizza Hut also should regularly make a discount such as by creating a combo
meal and giving discount vouchers.
