Discussion Questions

Group:

What is the athlete’s sport and position?

Hockey Player that is a forward (Center)

What components of athletic performance are required for the sport?

Quick Reflexes, Quick/Agile, Powerful legs/Speed (explosiveness), Overall Strength, Flexibility

What tests did you select to administer to the athlete?

1. Bench Press
2. Shuttle (5-10-5)
3. Wingate

In what order should the tests be administered to the athlete?

1. Shuttle (5-10-5)
2. Bench Press
3. Wingate

Why did you select the specific tests listed above?

I chose a quick shuttle test first so his legs would be able to recovery for the Wingate
after the bench press. The bench press is second as well because it is an upper body test that does
not require your legs if doing it properly. I chose the Wingate test last because it is the most
physically demanding test to perform and performing it first would most likely hinder the results
of our participants.
Bench press was chosen because a hockey player will have to use his upper body when
on the boards, cross checking, or fighting in the sport of hockey and will use their upper and
lower body to shoot. Shuttle was chosen to see the agility and quickness of the participant and
see how fast he is able to react and move. Wingate is used to see the power output of the
individual’s legs and their endurance in the 30 second time frame while they are usually on ice
for 45-60 seconds at a time.

Application Practice

A 275-pound (125 kg) male collegiate football player was tested 10 weeks before the start of the
season with these results:

1RM bench press: 275 pounds (125 kg)

Vertical jump: 24 inches (61 cm)
T-test: 11.6 seconds
40-yard (37 m) sprint: 4.8 seconds

Which of the following need to be improved in the preseason training program?

I. agility
II. speed
III. lower body power
IV. muscular strength

In what order should the tests be administered to the collegiate football player in the example
above? Order the tests 1 to 4 by choosing a number for each test (1 = first test; 4 = last test):

1RM bench press (2)

Vertical jump (3)

T-test (4)

40-yard (37 m) sprint (1)
