What role does history take in the study of Philippine society, culture and identity?

Our history was filled with our origins. These origins include our society, culture, and identity in
the past. We are what we are as a nation today because of the things that happened in our past
which can only be looked back through history. The Philippines did not have a beautiful past, but
a historical one. Some may have been altered and erased for the selfish benefit of some people,
but it still holds great importance. By looking into the things that happened in the past, we can
grasp why our society is how it is today. We can continue to preserve the culture that we have
and bring those that we lost. We will know what identity we have as a country and why that’s
we’re known for.
Our society in the past up until now was filled with poverty. We should’ve used the things that
we learned in our history to improve our current situation. We should learn from our mistakes
but what we do is to continue committing them. Our society then was also filled with oppression
and injustice. Where women’s efforts during revolutions was not widely recognized unlike those
with men although they contributed a big part to it. Justice then, just like now, was only for those
with power. It is also because of history that we have knowledge about why we have such
different practices and beliefs in different ethnicities and so that we can defend the culture that
we currently have and preserve it. It is also because of our history that we have an identity as a
nation. We have went through so much and is still going through such problems which signifies
how strong our country and its inhibitants is. Because of the things we did in the past, we are
also known for our hospitality. Like how we welcomed the Jews in our country to save them
during the Holocaust.
Our history holds great significance. Something that we should look back to but not somewhere
to be stuck in. We should learn from it. Let the mistakes in the past serve as a lesson to do well in
the present and help each one of us have a chance to have a bright future. We should use our
history to improve and turn it into something that we can all benefit from. As said in the
discussion, “what’s present today will be the past tomorrow.” So we need to make sure that what
we do now would be something significant and something that others will learn from. Be an
example, not a painful lesson. Although some division in opinions might occur because we all
have different perspectives and opinions, we should not forget that it is only an opportunity to
build a deeper understanding and a chance for us to enhance our critical thinking and analyzation
and to appreciate the things and event that we have today.

My past had a big influence on who and what I am today. I did a lot of immature and irrational
things in the past. But what I can say is that I have managed to establish growth within myself. I
am now different from who I am from the past. I have learned from my past mistakes and hope
to continue avoiding them. I used to be okay with our cruel society and not care about it. But
because of my development, I have learned to use my ability to think, care and meddle with
sensitive topics and issues and be open-minded about it. I am proud to say that because of the
things I went through, I am now a better version of myself who still continues to improve as time
passes by. My past, just like our country’s, was not something beautiful but was certainly
remarkable for me. I will continue to learn from it and use it to build a better version of me.
