Our NEW Community Grants Program!

The Costa Mesa Community Foundation awards grants on a selective basis for grass-roots projects that benefit the
Costa Mesa community. The Foundation is particularly interested in organizations with low overhead, innovative
approaches, and collaborative elements to their work.

Community Objective Grant Areas:

Grants are awarded in four areas:

Youth Education & Recreation: Programs that positively influence youth in their academic and physical development.
Park Enhancements: Projects that enhance the condition and availability of our public parks.
Public Safety: Projects that improve the quality of public safety equipment and services.
Community Pride Initiatives: Projects that build neighborhood involvement in shared interests and community activities.

Program Guidelines:

Eligibility: Costa Mesa-based nonprofit and community organizations (such as neighborhood associations or groups).
The Foundation does not provide grants to individuals, for fundraising, to programs that promote or engage in religious or
political doctrine, or to organizations outside the city of Costa Mesa.

Funding Amount: Grants range in size from $250 to $5,000 annually.

Evaluation Criteria:

Project Objectives/Community Benefits: (submit additional pages/material as necessary):

ALEKS software, a UCI spinoff product, is offered to students who are practically walking out of the door
as dropouts. For obvious reasons, dropouts strolling our streets is not in our city's interest. Keeping them
in school for 2-3 more years allows more socialization and greater success for all. Failing math is the
primary school reason for students to drop out. They give up. Helping them earn credits quickly is the
best way to help them pass math, stay in school and graduate.

Project Activities: Continue current math licenses to keep 200 to 270 students per year not dropping out.

Ability to Leverage Other Community Resources:

The Sunrise Rotary Club, the Newport-Mesa Schools Foundation, DonorsChoose, and some parents
have all helped keep the math credit recovery program going and succeeding. Computers are already
installed in school and the software can be used at home or in libraries.

Project Schedule: All licenses will be used immediately. School district funding has been cut.

Amount Requested: Annual licenses including summer school that each serve 3-6 students cost $40
each. 50 licenses would cost $2,000. Even one license would help.

Applications will be reviewed by the Subcommittee, and the Foundation will make a determination
within 6-8 weeks of receipt. For more information visit the Costa Mesa Community Foundation website
