FILTER HOUSE
The purpose of the filter house is to remove contaminants and moisture so that clean, dry air is
provided for both turbine combustion and package ventilation.

Atmospheric air enters the filter house where contaminants are removed. Separate ducts are
provided for separation of the combustion air flow and the ventilation air flow. Air flow is
divided via the combustion air transition duct and ventilation air transition duct. Air then flows
through two separate ducts to the package, where combustion air enters the turbine, and
ventilation air enters the package.

Vane separators and filters are fixed into the filter house along with drainage and pressure
tapping points. Access to the filter house is via a door with stainless steel components.

Filters
There are four stages of filters, comprised of the following;
 1st stage - Hydra Marine Vane Separator
 2nd stage - PFA Cleanable Pre-Filter Bag
 3rd stage - HXA High Efficiency Disposable Bag Filter (combustion air only)
 4th stage - Hydra Marine Vane Separator

1st Stage Hydra Separator

The purpose of the hydra separator to remove water during conditions of high humidity, heavy
rainfall, or heavy sea spray. The Hydra separator uses stainless steel construction welded into a
specially designed casing. Inertial action of the droplet laden air passing between them is such
that the droplets are thrown out of the air-stream onto the vanes.
The vanes have pockets built into them, which run their entire length. The design ensures that
the air may pass between the vanes, but that water droplets separated onto the vane surface are
collected by the pockets and drained into a trough at the bottom of the casing.
The drain trough extends below the exposed area of the vanes so that the drainage is not impeded
by stray airflows. It has been designed to avoid fouling by sand or debris so that the operation of
the vanes will make the drain trough self-cleaning. This means that no access hatches are
necessary at this stage, so not only is a maintenance procedure eliminated but also a possible
source of air leakage is avoided.

2nd Stage - PFA Cleanable Pre-Filter Bag

The PFA pre-filter bag is a cleanable synthetic bag filter designed to retain large particles of dust
and hydrocarbons, which may enter the intake. The PFA pre-filter bags make up the first stage
of filtration and fit into the rear access stainless steel holding frame. The PFA pre-filter has 3
pockets, each being made from bonded polyester material.

3rd Stage - HXA High Efficiency Filter Bags

The HXA high efficiency filter bag consists of multi layers of filter media. The initial filter
media layer is an open density polyester filter mat, which has a high dust loading capacity and is
intended to store the majority of the dust collected. The final filter mat is a high-density
polyester filter material which has a very small pore size, giving it a high efficiency against small
particles. In addition, the HXA bag acts as a coalescer and will collect the fine salt particles in
the air-stream, reducing the salt-in-air concentration to acceptable limits. The aerosol salt, which
enters the bag, is coalesced into larger droplets which either drain away or are re-entrained into
the air-stream and removed by the downstream vane separator.

THE HXA BAG IS A DISPOSABLE ITEM AND THEREFORE SHOULD NOT BE

WASHED.

4th Stage –Hydra Separator

The main purpose of this separator is to remove any water droplets that are re-entrained into the
system from the HXA filter bags. The 4th stage Hydra separator is similar in construction as the
first stage. Water collected runs from the trough into a manometric drain trap, which is designed
to ensure effective drainage of the collected water.

Drain System
A drain system is provided to ensure that any water caught within the air intake is immediately
removed, thus preventing the risk of re-entrainment into the air stream. Drains are provided for
the access housing, inter space (bag housing) between stages 3 and 4, and the final hydra
separator. These drains are connected into a common drainage system, which utilizes two drain
boxes and a water seal to prevent unfiltered air from being sucked through the drain.

Instrumentation
The inlet filter house is monitored for filter stage differential pressure and air temperature. All
instrument tubing is stainless steel and is provided with a drain valve at any low point. The
following instrumentation is provided to monitor the performance of the filtration equipment.

Lighting
Lights are installed inside the filter housing and light switches are fitted outside each access
door. Emergency lighting is also provided.

Ducts
Separate ventilation and combustion air ducts deliver air from the filter house to the turbine
package. Two air system elbows are connected via flexible joints at the top portion of each
vertical duct to compensate for any misalignment or movement. Structural supports are provided
on the 90º elbows, and guide supports are provided for the vertical ducts.

Air Intake Silencers

To maintain the 75 dbA sound level limit, silencers are bolted to the turbine inlet plenum on both
the combustion and ventilation air ducts.
