MEDITATION

As per Ayurveda’s Sushruta Samhita (Su.15.48) Health is when the Doshas, Agni and Dhatu, Mala,
Kriya are balanced and in equilibrium (Meaning that all the physiological functions of the body are
stable and in equilibrium ) resulting in “ Prasanna Atma, Indriya Manas” (Pleasant mind and
senses)

Ayurveda regards mind ( senses and mind) as an important component of good health. There
cannot be good health without a healthy mind. In fact in the present world we are well versed
with “ psychosomatic diseases” (diseases that have their origins in the mind and manifest in the
body ) clearly illustrating the close relationship between physical and mental health.

6 Common Causes of ill mental health :

1. Physical: inactive, heavy and unclean body

2. Food and food habits: Unwholesome food, overeating and irregular food habits

3. Physiological : buildup of toxins and sluggish functions of the internal organs

4. Lack of quality sleep: both quality and quantity of sleep / rest

5. Senses : over stimulation and exhaustion of sense organs

6. Unhealthy interpersonal and social interactions

Addressing the above causes forms the basis of sound mental health practices and Ayurveda
does this in a very comprehensive manner. Also, the Astanga Yoga of Patanjali, which may not
have been designed with mental illness as the objective, is an excellent tool/practice to help
nurture a healthy mind.

DIY : Based on Ayurveda and Yoga, here is a quick look at a simple and safe meditation practice
to nurture your Mind and Body :

You could also follow one of the many Meditation apps while you look for a trained teacher. Like

more harm than good.

The benefits of a regular meditation are many, for starters this practice will help get to know the
most complex part of our self, the mind, a little better, opening up avenues, not only for good
mental and physical health, but also for a happy life.
