Do the following exercises. Work with a dictionary.

♦ Exercise 1

Discuss the following situation:

Think of someone you know who has a job they have always longed for. Do they still enjoy
what they are doing? Do they get enough money to lead a decent life or more? (Write a
paragraph of about 5 lines. Remember: whatever the answer, it doesn’t matter if you refer to
something real or not!)

I`m thinking about my family friend who`s working and enjoying his work and of course he
get enough money. I think this is the best what would happen in someone`s life because to work and
to love what you`re working, it`s just a dream nowadays. It's hard to find a job and to enjoy it. We
have so many options and it`s really hard to find the job you like and to be paid good. I wish I will
find my dream job and I will get enough money for a good life for me and for my family.

♦ Exercise 2

A. Read the following text, then explain the highlighted words, phrases or idioms
according to the context. Check their meaning in a dictionary:

Business or Pleasure?

You master English and want to have the summer of your lifetime but don’t
think you can afford it? Why not consider finding work abroad to make money,
friends and memories or have an incredible summer adventure that won’t break
the bank?

-break the bank-to cost too much

Wages across Europe vary depending on the role and the country you are working in,
meaning you should put time into researching how much a specific opportunity would line
your pockets, alongside researching living costs of the country to make sure your wage will
actually support your new lifestyle. Teaching English abroad can be a great source of income
2

for those wanting to spend their summer abroad, especially for those who already have an
international certificate. Short-term summer schools or camps, which also come with the
added benefit of getting to join in with all the fun activities!

Line your pockets

To make a large amount of money for oneself in a way that is considered greedy or dishon
est. The phrase typically implies that one is prioritizing making money above some other, mo
re admirable goal.

If you don’t feel as though teaching English is for you, hospitality work is another
great paying alternative that can take you all over Europe this summer. It tends to be easier to
land a job if you have some experience, and speak a little of the language of the country
where you will be working, as you will need to converse with customers – you will reap the
benefits in this fun, relaxed job that comes with the possibility of tips! There are numerous
hospitality roles to suit your experience and often companies hire seasonal workers in groups
so you will have the chance to meet people from all over the world who share your
adventure-loving mindset.

To land a job = to successfully acquire something

Reap the benefits =to get something good as a result of your own action
Adventure-loving mindset- a positive attitude towards is putting yourself in a situation
where you are forced to be challenged, where you are forced to learn, and where you are
forced to grow

Resort work around Europe is a great way to immerse yourself in the holiday vibe, as you
are surrounded by holiday-makers and those working to experience new countries like you.
Resorts offer a variety of summer jobs, from entertainers to cleaners and from bar staff to
receptionists, meaning wherever your skills lie you are sure to find a role that is the perfect fit
for you. There is also added benefit that resorts have great facilities that staff often have
access to, in beautiful locations, so a trip to the beach after work is always possible.

Vibe = the mood or character of a place, situation or piece of music

(your skills) lie-something in which one is interested; a hobby or pursuit

Another great option for those looking for summer jobs abroad is to work at a summer
camp, where there is the opportunity to work as a camp counsellor supervising and arranging
fun activities (that you also get to participate in!) for the campers. Working at a summer
camp also means that you will meet like-minded colleagues, and as food and accommodation
are included as you live on-sight, you can save what you earn which can fund your travelling
adventure once camp is over!

Like-minded = having similar tastes or opinions

3

On –sight = as soon as someone or something is or can be seen

There are countless other summer jobs in Europe available, so if you want to get the
right one, apply for it at a job agency of the sort. Later, when asked at the airport “Business or
pleasure?” just answer “Both”. And leave all your friends back home exclaim “Nice work if
you can get it!”

♦ Exercise 6

A. Read the text below and answer the questions that follow:

How does someone get to have the job they want?

It is not so easy an activity to select the right employee for a position, therefore finding
someone suited for a particular post is more often than not a long and complicated job itself.
Generally, the process of appointing someone for a vacant post undergoes a multi-stage
procedure, starting with the job analysis, which consists of a set of procedures to identify the
content of a job in terms of activities and attributes of job requirement needed to perform the
activities. Job analysis provides information of organizations which helps to determine which
employees are best suited for specific jobs. Through the analysis, the analyst needs to
understand what the important tasks of the job are, how they are carried out, and the
necessary human qualities needed to complete the job successfully.
7

Step two is the process of attracting individuals on a timely basis, in sufficient numbers
and with appropriate qualifications, to apply for jobs with an organization. It is called
recruitment (also hiring, A.E.). Companies have two options: to recruit employees directly
or to turn to professional help, i.e., external recruitment, which is normally done by a
recruitment agency or employment agency, also known as headhunting firm. Their
specialists, called recruiters (or headhunters, A.E.) will do their best to recruit employees,
or headhunt people for very important jobs, especially when the company needs trained and
specialized employees already working for other firms or companies on promise that they
will provide them with higher pay and benefits. It is the case with the headhunting for white-
collar employees, for instance. Using the job criteria provided by the employer organization,
the recruitment agency will generate the applicant pool and do the preliminary interviews,
screening out the unqualified candidates and sending them only those who are actually
qualified for the post, named in this case recruits (or hires, A.E.).
The process of recruitment starts with the job posting, the procedure used to inform
potential candidates that there is a vacancy in an organization. This is done by advertising the
vacant post or (open position, A.E.), which can range from a simple help wanted ad in the
situations vacant pages or appointments pages (or classifieds, A.E.) to an extensive
multimedia campaign. Help wanted ads often include a URL1 for online applications as well
as more traditional methods for reply. Many companies post vacancies (or job openings,
A.E.) on their websites or on specialized sites such as Career Builder and Monster.com (US).
Of course, online advertising costs less than traditional advertising (still used for entry-level
positions), it is easy and quick, its responses arrive faster and it can generate a far wider range
of applicants. The candidates are then asked to send in an application form (either by post or
on-line), generally accompanied by an application letter, a letter of intent or a covering
letter (cover letter, A.E.) enclosing a CV, i.e. Curriculum Vitae (or résumé, A.E.). Then the
selection step starts. It is the process of choosing from a group of applicants the individual(s)
best suited for a particular position for the organization. The selection focuses mainly on the
backgrounds of the applicants, i.e. their educational qualifications and previous work
experience.
Once the applicant pool is done, the screening process follows. Either companies (directly
through their human resources specialists) or the recruitment agents will organize a screening
interview with those applicants that appear qualified based on the information submitted on
their application form or CV (letter of intent, covering letter etc.). The interviewer will ask
the candidates a few straightforward questions to determine the candidates’ appropriateness
for the position. A final decision will be taken after the testing step, which consists in using a
range of other testing methods (for example, using psychometric tests) in order to assess
candidates’ aptitudes, personality, honesty and motivation, others than those initially
mentioned in their documents.
The candidate best suited for the position is offered the job and he/she is given details of
the conditions of work to be done together with the pay, benefits, a pension scheme etc. The
candidate can accept the job and the terms of his/her employment or can turn it down. If
he/she accepts, he/she is officially appointed for the position (in case of a higher position) or
simply hired.
