With multiple variables and only one equation we won’t be able to fully solve the equation
to a numeric answer, we can only rearrange it better to leave x by itself to satisfy this
question.

First subtract the c from both sides of the equation to move c to the left side of the
equation. Doing it to both side moves one variable out of the x side which we want to
isolate.

y - c = mx + c - c

y - c = mx

Next to move the variable m, we divide both sides by m. Dividing mx by m, makes m/m =
1, which leaves us with x on its own side of the equation.

(y - c ) / m = mx / m

(y - c ) / m = x

rearranging the equa … (more)

PROOF

If x=(y-c)/m, then the equations

y=mx+c

y=[m(y-c)/m]+c (Cancel the common factor “m” in the numerator and denominator to
simplify the fraction)

y=y-(c-c)

y=y-0 and

y=y prove the root (zero) x=(y-c)/m of the expression mx+c

First, treat the equals like a balance, if you do it on the left you must do it on the right.

so, y=mx+c

take away c from the right, and the left y-c=mx, get it?

then get rid of the m on the right, but as its multiplying the x you must divide by it. (y-c)/m
=x

Is that ok?

(I learned it as y=mx+b instead of c, so if I say b you know what I mean)

Subtract the b from both sides to end up with y-b=mx.

Then divide both sides by m to get (y-b)/m=x. In other words, the independent variable is
equivalent to the dependent variable minus the dependent variable’s value at zero all

answer: x = (y - c) / m

given:
y = mx + c ; reverse the arrangement
mx + c = y ; transpose c to right by adding -c to both side
mx + c - c = y - c ; cancel the c at left side
mx = y - c ; to remove the constant m at left, divide both side by m
mx / m = (y - c) / m ; finally
x = (y -c) / m

The trick to solve for x is to reverse the order of operations (a.k.a. BEDMAS, or PEDMAS).

PEDMAS stands for: P = parentheses, E = exponents, D = division, M = multiplication, A =

addition, and S = subtraction.

y = mx + c

y - c = mx

x = (y-c)/m

y = mx + b is the equation for a line on a graph in terms of y . That means that you’ll

plug in a number for x, and y will be your output. In other words, you decide the x and
you get the y . However, you can rearrange this to get your linear equation in terms of x .
This will make it so you start plugging in y 's instead of x 's. When your linear equation is in
terms of x , x will be your output and y will be your input.

Here’s how you do that with slope-intercept form:

y = mx + b ⇒ y + (−b) = mx + b + (−b) ⇒ y − b = mx

y−b mx
⇒ =
m m

We get the fina … (more)

First you have to get c the left side of the equation:

y-c=mx…….(I)

Then you divide both sides by m to get x

y-c/m=mx/m

Giving us x=y-c/m
