information selection, organization and development.

The Effects of Using the Facebook

by: Anne Gelene Tobias Domangsang

“Think about what people are doing on Facebook today. They’re keeping up with their friends and
family, but they’re also building an image and identify for themselves, which in a sense is their brand.
They’re connecting with the audience what they want to connect to. It’s almost a disadvantage if you’re not
on it now.” – Mack Zuckerberg.

With the advent and continuous development of technology comes the Internet and the emerging issues that it
brings. According to the Internet World Statistics, there are approximately 2,276,233,742 internet users worldwide in 2012.
Today, it is no doubt that such number has dramatically increased.

The purpose of the internet has been changing from time to time. Decades ago, many people used Internet mainly
to research and acquire relevant information that could be valuable in their fields of study and life endeavors. It has also
been used to communicate with people. Today, however, many people use the Internet as their main source of
entertainment and socialization. You can even bet that many of these Internet users only go online to check their Facebook
accounts.

It is important to learn that the Statistics Portal reports 1.44 billion monthly active Facebook users monthly as of the
first quarter of 2015. Users are defined as those who have logged into Facebook during the last 30 days. Interestingly,
Facebook users in 2008 did not even reach a hundred millions. Hence in the third quarter of 2012, the number of active
Facebook users skyrocketed and surpassed 1 billion. Furthermore, as of that quarter, the social network had 1.25 billion
active mobile users.

A question remains, however: what is really the impact of Facebook in our world today?

The Facebook can be used to connect with people. Probably, all of us have found friends and acquaintances that
we would like to reconnect with in the Facebook. This has been one of the fastest way to chat and communicate with people
all over the world. We can use this social network to invite friends to an important events, inform people to significant news
in our lives, and vice versa. This has also been a very effective way to advertise business pursuits, look for the job
opportunities, validate the credibility of a certain individual or organization, be informed about important world phenomenon,
search for great leisure places, and find a great educational opportunity and many more.
However, if the Facebook renders countless benefits, it may also cause danger to users who are not cautious and
alert. For example, adding strangers, fake accounts and untrustworthy acquaintances on Facebook may cause threat on the
individual and his or her family security. If not careful, one may also be a victim of business and other organizational scams.
Other people may even believe information and news from unreliable sources and cause other people to be misled by
sharing such information. Pornography and other materials that are not appropriate for young people can be accessed
easily. Cyberbullying and persecution have caused many people pain and suffering. Sometimes, opportunities for genuine
face-to-face interaction are sacrificed, and precious time is wasted.

Kimberly S. Young’s research study entitled “Internet Addiction: A News Clinical Phenomenon and Its
Consequences” in 2013, tackles very critical issues that happen in reality among Internet users, in which she explains that
the Internet has great effects, not just to students and employees but also to family relationships. In fact, three surprising
problems among users emerged after conducting the study: (1 ) cyber affair, (2) student internet abuse and (3) employee
internet abuse. Social media specifically the Facebook, play a great role in such issues.

So, is a Facebook a blessing to the world of communication and social media? Or it is a cause for worry among the
guardians of societal ethics and morality? Is it a boon or a bane?

Well, as we reflect upon the impact of social media, it is important to remember that in the end, it is still up to us
whether to use social media to our advantage or allow it to destroy us. The Facebook and other social media can be very
beneficial if used properly. It can help us connect with people and pursue great opportunities. Pornography, cyberbullying
and other online scams will not be able to affect us if we do not allow it to enter into our online lives. Because in the end, the
nature of the internet is not really the challenge – but the discipline of its users.

Answer the following questions:

1. What pattern of development is used?

Narration.

2. “Is a Facebook a blessing to the world of communication and social media? Or it is a cause for worry among the
guardians of societal ethics and morality? Is it a boon or a bane?”
Answer the above statement and make a substantial critique about it.
Answer:
As the statement declared and according to research facebook is very useful nowadays and we can’t deny it
because of what we see however facebook may also cause danger to users who are not cautious and alert. For example,
adding strangers, fake accounts and untrustworthy acquaintances on Facebook may cause threat on the individual and his or
her family security. If not careful, one may also be a victim of business and other organizational scams. Cyberbullying and
persecution have caused many people pain and suffering. Sometimes, opportunities for genuine face-to-face interaction are
sacrificed, and precious time is wasted.

MODULE 2: LEARNING TASK (Critical Reading as looking for ways of Thinking)

Instruction: Cite the claims made in the following text and classify them. (“Eat Bulaga,” the Best Form of Edutainment)

Example:
1. If there is one show on television which best exemplifies edutainment, it must be the longest-running noontime or
afternoon variety show on air in the history of Philippine television – Claim of Value
Explanation: The author may claim that Eat Bulaga BEST exemplifies edutainment BUT you may have your own point of
view. (NOTE: Explanation is not included, NILAGAY KO LANG PARA MAS MAINTINDIHAN)

“Eat Bulaga,” the Best Form of Edutainment

By: Jesus Z. Menoy

1. If there is one show on television which best exemplifies edutainment, it must be the longest-running noontime or
afternoon variety show on air in the history of Philippine television – “Eat Bulaga,” which celebrated its 36 th on July
30, 2015.
2. Edutainment is a portmanteau coined from the words “education” and “entertainment,” Oftentimes, it is taken as a
synonym of “infotainment” a blend derived from the words “information” and “entertainment”. However I consider
“edutainment” broader than “infotainment” in much the same way as “education” is more encompassing than
“information.”
3. Produced by Television and Production Exponents, Inc. (TAPE), the show has been making lunchtime of Filipinos
from Aparri to Tawi-Tawi happy. Its hosts led by Tito, Vic and Joey are not only witty but also funny. The other
regulars – Wally Bayola, Jose Manalo, Paolo Ballesteros, Allan K., Michael V., Pia Guanio, Ryan Agoncillo, Ruby
Rodriquez, Pauleen Luna, Anjo Yllana, Jimmy Santos and Ryzza Mae Dizon – possess not only hosting skills but
also a large number of talents, among them singing, dancing, and acting. (The “Bulaga Pa More” contest and their
annual Holy Week presentations can attest to these.) The additional mainstays give new flavors to the show and
make it more attractive to its televiewers; these are Alden Richards, Maine Mendoza, Sam Y. G., and HBD girl
Patricia, the EB Babes the “That’s My Bae” finalists, and the other back-ups also contribute to the show’s staying
power and competitive advantage.
4. Just recently, the show has enjoyed very high ratings for weeks or even for months because of its original version of
the telenovela – the kalyeserye – called so because it is presented live on the streets where the “Bayanihan of the
People” is held so the residence of the streets get the chance to watch the “Sugod Bahay Gang” and the other
members of the kalyeserye cast perform. This kalyeserye was an accidental replacement of the “Problem-Solving”
segment.
5. What makes “Eat Bulaga” the best form of Edutainment? The kalyeserye itself – which features the love team of the
Pambansang Bae Alden Richards and Yaya Dub, the Dubsmash Queen Maine Mendoza, considered to be the
fastest-rising star on Philippine Television now. The love story is very entertaining to the extent that people are
glued to their seats as they view the two and other cast members portray their respective roles. Commendable is
Wally Bayola whose versatility is shown through his performance of a variety of roles (Lola Nidora, Doctora Dora
the Explorer, Dhurizz, and Rihanna). Also noteworthy are the liberated Lola Tinodora portrayed by Jose Manalo and
the effervescent Lola Tidora performed by Paolo Ballesteros. Aside from the entertainment that the kalyeserye
brings, the viewers are bombarded with lessons to be applied in real-life situations. That love takes time or that it
should not be rushed is one of these lessons. Values education is at its peak; patience, honesty, modesty, courtesy,
chivalry, determination, respect for elders, love for family members, and other virtues have a big space in this
family-oriented series. Moreover, table manners, proper dressing, and other good behaviors are also taught here.
6. Prior to this love narrative on street, many segments of “Eat Bulaga” are both educational and entertaining. Its
contests such as “That’s my Foreignoy,” ”That’s my Foreignay,” “Super Sireyna,” “That’s my Boy,” “Little Miss
Philippines,” and the most popular of them all – “Pinoy Henyo,” which came in many versions (for grade school
students, for high school students, for college students, for dabarkads, for lovers for mothers and daughters, for
fathers and sons, for workmates, for grandparents and the like) educate as they amuse televiewers.
7. With its innovative segments, “Eat Bulaga” never fails to entertain and to educate viewers. Kudos to its writers and
the other EB people who have been coming up with and have not been running out of original concepts to satisfy its
ever-growing number of viewers! For me, EB need not copy. Its originality will let it stay as the best of edutainment.

MODULE 3: LEARNING TASK (Critical Reading as Reasoning)

Instruction: Browse the internet and look for an article about a pressing issue today. Choose among these articles and
examine the article in terms of: identify the claims of the writer and create evaluative statements by giving
assertions about its text properties and giving counterclaims about the text read.

HOW TO FORMULATE AN EVALUATIVE STATEMENT (Follow the 4 steps)

1. Begin with the positives.

2. Keep your feedback concise.
3. When pointing out negatives, focus on the situation, not the person. Mention too, why is it a negative. (counterclaims)
4. Provide a solution or suggested improvement to the negatives, as well as a justification about why the solution or
suggestion will work.

Example: Article on COVID 19 PANDEMIC

ANSWER:

TITLE: Corruption

Corruption is both a major cause and a result of poverty around the world. It occurs at all levels of society, from
local and national governments, civil society, judiciary functions, large and small businesses, military and other
services and so on.

Corruption affects the poorest the most, in rich or poor nations, though all elements of society are affected in
some way as corruption undermines political development, democracy, economic development, the
environment, people’s health and more.

_The issue of corruption is very much inter-related with other issues. At a global level, the international
(Washington Consensus-influenced) economic system that has shaped the current form of globalization in the
past decades requires further scrutiny for it has also created conditions whereby corruption can flourish and
exacerbate the conditions of people around the world who already have little say about their own destiny. At a
national level, people’s effective participation and representation in society can be undermined by corruption,
while at local levels, corruption can make day to day lives more painful for all affected.

A difficult thing to measure or compare, however, is the impact of corruption on poverty versus the effects of
inequalities that are structured into law, such as unequal trade agreements, structural adjustment policies, so-
called free trade agreements and so on. It is easier to see corruption. It is harder to see these other more formal,
even legal forms of corruption. It is easy to assume that these are not even issues because they are part of the
laws and institutions that govern national and international communities and many of us will be accustomed to
it—it is how it works, so to speak. Those deeper aspects are discussed in other parts of this web site’s section on
trade, economy, & related issues.

These are some solutions:

1. End impunity
Effective law enforcement is essential to ensure the corrupt are punished and break the cycle of impunity, or
freedom from punishment or loss.

2. Reform public administration and finance management

Reforms focussing on improving financial management and strengthening the role of auditing agencies have in
many countries achieved greater impact than public sector reforms on curbing corruption.

3. Promote transparency and access to information

Countries successful at curbing corruption have a long tradition of government openness, freedom of the press,
transparency and access to information. Access to information increases the responsiveness of government
bodies, while simultaneously having a positive effect on the levels of public participation in a country.

4. Empower citizens
Strengthening citizens demand for anti-corruption and empowering them to hold government accountable is a
sustainable approach that helps to build mutual trust between citizens and government. For example,
community monitoring initiatives have in some cases contributed to the detection of corruption, reduced
leakages of funds, and improved the quantity and quality of public services.

5. Close international loopholes

Without access to the international financial system, corrupt public officials throughout the world would not be
able to launder and hide the proceeds of looted state assets. Major financial centres urgently need to put in place
ways to stop their banks and cooperating offshore financial centres from absorbing illicit flows of money.

MODULE 4: LEARNING TASK (Purposeful Writing in the Disciplines)

Instruction: Explain the purpose of academic writing and how it influences you as a student. (500 words)

MAAM PANO PAG SUMOBRA? (OHH DI VERY GOOD!)

ANSWER:

Academic writing has always had a central role in the academics arena globally. Schools and educators will share
knowledge and experience and train students to write academically, as the writing skills will benefit them later.

Academic writing serves as a tool of communication that conveys acquired knowledge in a specific field of study. Writing
academically will help students analyse, convey understanding, think critically and focus on technique and style. As a
student the purpose of academic writing, as with most other kinds of writing, is to communicate. As a student your writing is
the marker's only window to your thoughts. Therefore it is important that you learn how best to write in a way which will
convince the marker that you understand what you are talking about. When we write, we will surely look at previous writers’
ideas or work, and form our own understanding; we just cannot summarise what they have done, but we do need to think
why it was done and look for ways we can use it in the future. We learn to analyse from our reading and come out with what
is important.

For example a clearly written assignment lets the thought show through. A muddy one obscures the thinking, and gives the
impression the thought-processes are muddy too. Use quotations and paraphrase sparingly because the marker cannot tell
from other people's words what you are thinking. Get into the habit of using your own words. For example physical
exercises, it may be hard work at first but you will get better and better at it until you have a good strong intellectual
physique! To take the short cut of relying on other peoples' words bypasses thought processes and will make the material
very hard to remember as it has not been assimilated into your own mind - it is not your possession. You are not primarily a
collector of information, a recorder of the wisdom of others - that would be very boring. You are an active learner and a
unique interpreter of the information which comes your way.

The act of writing often clarifies your thoughts and writing in your own words is an act of creation. Originality in psychology is
normally thought of as designing new empirical studies or devising new theories. However whenever you describe
something in your own words you are displaying small-scale originality and critical evaluation. Even if you are describing
someone else's work, you are interpreting it and selecting combinations of words which most closely convey its meaning to
you. In addition you may well evaluate, criticise, compare, analyse, predict, summarise, synthesise and apply- all these
skills involve thought on your part, and the conclusions you draw should be uniquely yours. Academic writing has a strong
focus on technique and how it should be used to best convey ideas. We students learn about style and how to write essays
early on in our academic careers, we will find it much easier to write papers throughout university.

MODULE 4: LEARNING TASK (Purposeful Writing for the Professions)
