Microbiology ITB International Excursion 2010
Background
The rapid development of science and technology triggers the
world of industry to become more advance in all aspects. Further
more, it increases the demand for more high-skilled workers that
competent and professional on microbiologist related aspects
because microbiology as an expanding branch of science has a
broad spectrum of application in life including such as quality
control, sludge and waste treatment, food and beverages
industry, aqua culture, bioremediation, antibiotic agents, genetic
engineering technology, etc.

Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), as one of the best educational

institutions in Indonesia, is properly able to answer the global
challenge in casting the nation‟s next generation that can
compete in both local and international scope. There fore, the
students from ITB Microbiology Department are expected to be
capable in mastering science and technology in this field
theoretically and practically in international scale. In order to
achieve that goal, knowing the real work field in the global world
becomes important so that we can apply what we have studied in
Microbiology ITB directly.

Objective
1. To enlighten the students of Microbiology ITB about
microbiology fields.

2. To documented and evaluated for further improvement of

students knowledge for process in microbial technology
and industrial activities.

International Excursion Microbiology ITB 2010

Name of Event
This event is named by “International Excursion of Microbiology
2010”.

Event Description
International Excursion of Microbiology ITB 2010 is a field trip to
number of companies and institutions in Singapore which are
related to the work field of microbiology, especially for four main
subdivisions of the Microbiology Department which are:

1. Microbial Science
2. Industrial Microbiology
3. Environmental Microbiology, and
4. Medical Microbiology

Medi
In this excursion, the understanding of how Microbiology is applied
in related companies and institutions will be improved.

International Excursion Microbiology ITB 2010

NeWater

NeWater was founded in 1998 as a joint enterprise between the

Public Utilities Board (PUB) and Ministry of the Environment and
Water Resources (MEWR), Singapore. The main purpose of
establishment NeWater is to mantain sustainability of water usage
to fulfill the water needs of Singapore. The purified of waste water
is treated with a double membrane system: micro-filter and reverse
osmosis, followed by UV radiation.
With this processing, the waste water
could be reused into hygienic
drinking water.
In 2003, NeWater provides NeWater
Vision Centre, which provides
edutainment facilities to educate
publics about how the process of
water treatment in this place could
mantain the quality of drinking water
in Singapore according to the highest
standards and to build public confidence in the quality of their
drinking water . This centre educates the publics with several
interactive visualization and some methodes that easily
understood by the publics. Visitors can also look at the actual
water processing in NeWater factory that integrates with NeWater
Vision Centre. Visitors can look a dual-membrane technology and
UV radiation in the production of NeWater directly.

University of Singapore, the Singapore Polytechnic, the Institute of
Technical Education, the National University Hospital, the
Singapore Science Park, Ministry of Education, INSEAD Business
School, and Fusionopolis. This campus is dedicated to providing
space for biomedical research and development activities and
promoting peer review and collaboration among the private and
public scientific community.
Biopolis Shared Facilities (BSF) is supported from technical expertise.
Services currently available include Confocal Microscopy, DNA
Sequencing, Flow Cytometry, High Content Screening, Histology,
Microarray, NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), Protein Analytics
and X-ray Crystallography.
Biopolis development is divided into two phases, among others:
Biopolis Phase One comprises of a seven building, which
are named as Nanos, Genome, Helios, Chromos, Proteos,
Matrix and Centros. . Several government agencies,
publicly-funded research institutes and research labs of
pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies are
located there.
Biopolis Phase Two, comprising two blocks, named Neuros
and Immunos, which will house research on neuroscience
and immunology respectively.

Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology

The Institute of Molecular and

Cell Biology (IMCB) was
established in 1987 at the
National University of Singapore
(NUS) before becoming an
autonomous research institute
(RI) of the Agency for Science,
Technology and Research
(A*STAR). This company is
engaged in biotechnology and
pharmaceutical industries in
Singapore. MCB now boasts
about 40 core research labs and 8 core facility units consisting of
over 400 research scientists in total. IMCB‟s research activities
focus on six major fields: Cell Biology, Developmental Biology,
Structural Biology, Infectious Diseases, Cancer Biology and
Translational Research with core strengths in cell cycling, cell
signaling, cell death, cell motility and protein trafficking. IMCB‟s
achievements include being part of the international consortium
that successfully sequenced the entire pufferfish (Fugu rubripes) in
2002. IMCB was awarded the Nikkei Prize 2000 for Technological
Innovation in recognition of its growth into a leading international
research centre and its collaboration with industry and research
institutes worldwide. IMCB also has published more than 1300
international journals since 1987.

IMCB has numerous collaborations with industrial and academic

partners both in Singapore and worldwide. Recent highlights
include the licensing of DNA methylation technology to Hitachi
Asia Ltd. for cancer diagnostics development, the collaboration
with Merlion Pharmaceuticals for a drug discovery program,
licensing of zebrafish (Danio rerio) genetic markers, licensing of
microbial collections for drug screening, development of SARS and
malaria diagnostic kits.

International Excursion Microbiology ITB 2010

IMCB has several facilities such as Dna sequencing, Histology
Facility, Monoclonal Antibody Unit,Zebrafish Facility, RNAI
Screening Facility‟. While research activities within IMCB are thus
very diverse. It includes „Cancer Genetics, Cell Cycle Control, Cell

community. BTI spearheads bioprocess science and engineering
research by combining molecular biology, biochemistry,
proteomic and genomic sciences, to understand how to enhance
the productivity of cells, develop better cell culture, fermentation
and separation processes to manufacture important molecules
such as antibodies, recombinant DNA and proteins that target a
myriad of diseases. Current strategic areas of BTI research are:
Expression Engineering
Animal Cell Technology

Examples of activities conducted by the BTI is in the field of
microbial fermentation , BTI was researching about the metabolic
pathways of bacteria possessed plasmids that have a low growth
rate in order to obtain a high cell density. Research activities
conducted by the BTI are very advanced with extraordinary
technology as well. Very valuable if we could visit this place
especially if we can see directly in stem cell research and
fermentation of microbes and other studies related to the
development of immunology and related protein purification to
overcome various illnesses.
Facilities within BTI are:
2-D Electrophoresis

cosmetics, and medicines. Merlion Research is one of the
company's largest producers of natural products and it has the
largest collection in the world. The product is derived from modern
manufacturing processesMerlion Development is more focused on
the optimization and evaluation of existing natural products so as
to achieve the value and benefits of selling high.

Merlion Pharma has a collection of specimens from various types

of living things like plants, Eubacteria, Actinomycetes, and
Fungi. The collection reached 168.105 species, which covered 57%
of all genera of fungi, 67% of plant families, and 70% actinomycete
those are identified in this world . This collection is dubbed as "the
most Diverse and comprehensive collection of plant and microbial
samples in the world" (Prof Geoffrey A. Cordell, University of Illinois).
