Sound

By Ellie, India and Grace

Science understanding

Physical sciences

Light and sound are produced by a range of sources and can be

sensed (ACSSU020)

Science Inquiry Skills

Curriculum links
Planning and conducting

Participate in different types of guided investigations to explore

and answer questions, such as manipulating materials, testing
ideas, and accessing information sources (ACSIS025)

Evaluating

Compare observations with those of others (ACSIS213)

Communicating

Represent and communicate observations and ideas in a variety

of ways such as oral and written language, drawing and role play
(ACSIS029)
● Students will explore different sounds using

Objectives
their senses.

● Students identify and compare different sounds

made by using familiar objects

● Students compare characteristics of sound

such as loudness, pitch and actions.
We hear sounds all around us all the time in our everyday lives.

Background
Sound is created when something vibrates and sends energy
waves (vibrations). When these vibrations reach our ears, our
brain translates the signal to what we call sound.

Information
Vibrations travel through solids, liquids or gases to the ear and
the stronger the vibrations, the louder the sound.

Sound can be music, noise, talking, clapping etc.

What is sound? Teaching Year 1 children about the concept of sound includes
asking them to close their eyes and listen to the sounds that they
can hear in their environment or to play a sound matching game.
An awareness and familiarity of everyday sounds. eg,
the movement of water, wind, birds chirping, etc.

An understanding and ability to identify the difference

between loud and quiet sounds.

Prior knowledge A knowledge that ears detect sound.

Recognise that multiple things can make sounds. eg,.

can be made using instruments or can be heard from
other sources that are not considered as a musical
instrument.
Literacy

Engage in conversations and discussions, using

active listening behaviours, showing interest, and
contributing ideas, information and questions
(ACELY1656)

Integration
Music

Improvisation with sounds, simple pitch and

rhythm patterns to create music ideas
(ACAMUM080)

Visual art

Exploration of different materials, media and/or

technologies, when creating artwork
(ACAVAM107)
CHILDREN’S LITERATURE
Students listen to the following household sounds and
hold up the cue card that matches the correct sound.

Materials:

● Cue cards

Activity 1
Questions:

How did you know it was a toilet/door/hairdryer?

Was it a low pitch sound or a high pitch sound?

MATCH THAT SOUND
Was it loud or quiet?

Students use a variety of different recycled materials to
create their very own musical instrument. Students use
these instruments to explore the concept of sound and how
it it’s produced.

Materials:

● Recycled material
● String
● Elastic bands

Activity 2
● Tape
● Paper
● Scissors
● Rice
● Beans

MAKE YOUR OWN INSTRUMENT Safety:

Students will observe and demonstrate the safe way of

handling and using scissors

Questions:

How did your instrument make that sound?

What did you have to do to make that sound?

Students listen to the recording of an orchestra and
brainstorm/ list the different instruments they noted
being played.

Materials:

● Paper
● Pens

Activity 3 Questions:

What instruments did you hear?

WHAT CAN YOU HEAR? Was the music loud or quiet?

Was the music fast or slow?

Observational notes:
Notes are made from observations in the classroom
that describe significant incidents or behaviour that is
relevant to the learning objectives and outcomes of
the lesson in relation to the curriculum. These notes

Assessment
are used for reference and reflection on delivery of
lesson and learning outcomes.

Anecdotal notes:
Record specific observations of individual student
behaviours, skills and attitudes as they relate to the
outcomes of prescribed lessons. Such notes provide
cumulative information on student learning and
direction for further instruction.
