INPUT
What is Language?
Together in creation of human life is the creation of a wonderful and dynamic human
capacity – language. Animals are said to be able to communicate with each other. Whales sing,
wolves howl, dogs bark, and bird chirp. The sounds these creatures produce often reflect the
state of their emotions. While it may be true that animals communicate, only human beings are
truly capable of producing language.
MODULE 1 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION Learning Plans

What exactly is language? Linguists agree that a language can only be called a language
if it has a system of rules (Grammar), a sound system (Phonology), and a vocabulary (Lexicon).
These are the requirements for identifying a means of communication as a language. A monkey
may be able to signal to its partner that it is sharing food. The monkey will produce sounds and
gestures, but will not be able to organize the sounds into a meaningful system with rules.
Speech Community – refers to the group of people using the same language and understanding
each other using that language.
Language Acquisition – the process of acquiring language uses by those in the community.
Mother Tongues/First Languages – refers to the languages you acquire while growing up.
Second Languages – refers to the languages that you discover and learnt through formal
schooling or informally learning by their own.
Language Learning – the process of learning or acquiring your second languages.
Language Contact – when speakers of two or more languages interact and influence each
other.
Language Change – the result of language contact.
Language is indeed a complex human capacity. It is, therefore, important to be aware of
its features and behavior to be able to use language more effectively and productively in
communicating with others.

i. The exchange of thoughts, ideas, concepts, and views between or among two or more
people.
Context
i. Refers to the circumstance or environment in which communication takes place.

MODULE 1 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION Learning Plans

Such circumstance may include the physical or actual setting, the value positions of a speaker
/listener, and the relevance or appropriateness of a message conveyed.

Classifications of Communication
 Communication Mode
 Context
 Purpose and Style

Types of Communication According to Mode

A message may be conveyed via these types: verbal – non-verbal and visual. Though
communication is often thought of as verbal, the non-verbal mode is equally essential as it
enhances one’s message.

Verbal – Non-Verbal Communication

Effective Communication calls for the blending of these two types. One cannot be
separated from the other. For instance, door-to-door salesperson who demonstrate product
knowledge can only be effective if they know how to properly punctuate what they say with
proper gestures and facial expressions.

Visual Communication

Is the type of communication that uses visuals to convey information and/or messages.
Some examples are signs, symbols, imagery, maps, graphs, charts, diagrams, pictograms,
photos, drawings or illustrations, and even various forms of electronic communication.
Types of Communication According to Context
In this sub-section, context in communication is referred to as a composite of people
interacting with each other. Communication may also be classified according to context; (1)
intrapersonal, (2) interpersonal, (3) extended, (4) organizational communications, and (5)
intercultural communication.

Intrapersonal Communication

The Latin prefix intra- means within or inside. Intrapersonal communication then means
talking to oneself. Some label it as self or inner talk, inner monologue, or inner dialogue.
Psychologists call it with other names such as self-verbalization or self-statement.

MODULE 1 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION Learning Plans

Interpersonal Communication

As opposed to intra, the Latin prefix inter- means between, among, and together. An
interactive exchange takes place interpersonal communication takes place. However, as it
occurs, a transaction does not necessarily take place since it can only be a simple interaction
such as greetings, getting to know a person, or ordinary conversations that happen between or
among the interactants. This may occur in dyads or small groups, also known as group
communication.

Extended Communication

Extended Communication involves the use of electronic media. Unlike before when it
only called for the use of television and radio, nowadays, the description of extended
communication may be expanded as to include tele, audio, or phone conferencing; video-
conferencing; skype calls; and other technological means.
Since extended communication is public in nature, speakers are expected to be
prepared when they speak, making their language more formal.

Organizational Communication

With this type, the focus is on the role that communication plays in organizational
contexts. Organizations comprise individuals who work for the company.
For an organization to be successful, a system of communication should be put in place.
A set of rules or standards for communication protocol should be made clear so that interaction
patterns are established. On the part of the individual, you should be equipped with the needed
oral and written communication skills that the organization expects you to possess.
Types of Organizational Structure
i. Formal Structure – allows communication to take place via designated channels of
message flow between positions in the organization.

Approaches in Formal Structure

 Downward Communication – this is the type of communication that flows from lower
positions. E.g. President to a Manager or Supervisor, Manager to an ordinary
employee.
 Upward Communication – a type of communication wherein the message in
transmitted bottom-up. E.g. The subordinates/employees send communication to

MODULE 1 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION Learning Plans

their superiors/bosses bearing their views/feedbacks on organizational policies,

issues related to their jobs and the like.
 Horizontal Communication – is lateral on approach as it takes people belonging to the
same level but coming from different departments or units to facilitate performance of
tasks through proper coordination. E.g. A college dean sending excuse letters to other
department deans and coordinators in relation to their activity.
 Crosswise Communication – the approach is diagonal in nature as employees from
different units or departments working at various levels communicate with each other.
E.g. The General Manager communicates with an ordinary employee to respond to a
Memo from their Field Manager.

Each of these communication approaches has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Note that these structures are usually presented in the company’s organizational chart
and policy manuals.

ii. Informal Structure– comes from unofficial channels of message flow. Also known as
‘grapevine,’ messages coming from the different levels of the organization are
transmitted. This occurs due to the dissatisfaction of some employees accompanied by
uncertainty, such as superiors playing favorites and unfavorable or unacceptable
company rules and regulations.

Each organization has its own culture. This is referred to as ‘organizational culture.’ Based on
the history and development, an organization develops its own core values, vision and mission
statements, goals, and objectives. Organizational culture is of utmost significance since it will
dictate the kind of behavior that employees should possess as well as the extent of
commitment expected from them by the organization. They all share in the values, practices,
vision, and mission of the organization.
Intercultural Communication

As the term implies, it is communication between or among people having different

linguistic, religious, ethnic, social, and professional backgrounds. Even gender difference affects
communication. Individuals having different orientations communicate and interpret messages
differently. This particularly happens with non-verbal communication.
For instance, Australians consider eye contact as important in assessing the sincerity of
a person while for Indians, looking straight into the eyes of a person while talking is
inappropriate. This does not, however, mean that they are dishonest or insincere. Moreover,

MODULE 1 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION Learning Plans

Indians interpret waving of hand from side to side as no or go away while it means hello to
Westerners.

Types of Communication According to Purpose and Style

Finally, communication may be classified according to purpose and style. Earlier, formal
and informal communication have been discussed in relation to organizational communication.
Similarly, the types of communication in relation to purpose and style are formal and informal.
However, rather than focusing on the transmission of message and message flow, the focus
here is on the communication setting and the mode of delivery.

i. Formal Communication – employs formal language delivered orally or in written forms.

Objectives of Formal Communication

 To inform
 To entertain
 To persuade

ii. Informal Communication – certainly does not employ formal language. It involves
personal and ordinary conversations with friends, family members, or acquaintances
about anything under the sun. The mode maybe oral as in face-to-face, ordinary or
everyday talks and phone calls, or written as in the case of e-mail messages, personal
notes, letters, or text messages.

The purpose is simply to socialize and enhance relationships.

INPUT
Communication Process
Communication is inevitable. Our need for self-expression leads us to communicate not
only our thoughts but also our feelings. Communication maybe done verbally or non-verbally. A
simple yawn from a member of the audience in a public speaking engagement is a non-verbal
message sent to the speaker. On the other hand, a phone call inquiring about a certain product
is an example of a verbal message.

MODULE 1 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION Learning Plans

Communication is understood as the process of meaning-making through a channel or a

medium. It comes from the Latin word communicares, meaning to share or to make ideas
common. The connection that encompasses interaction among partakers is at the center of
your learning of communication.
The Components of the Communication Process
i. Source
The sender carefully crafts the message. The sender may be anyone: an author of a book,
a public speaker in a special occasion or even a traffic enforcer.

ii. Message
The message is the reason behind any interaction. It is the meaning shared between the
sender and the receiver. Messages takes many forms. They could mean poems, songs,
essays, news articles, road signs and even symbols.

iii. Channel
The channel is the means by which a message is conveyed. When we answer a phone
call, the phone is the channel. On the other hand, when your parents receive a notification
of your absences from school, the channel is a letter. It is the responsibility of both the
sender and the receiver to choose the best channel for the interaction.

iv. Receiver
The receiver is the person who receives the transmitted message. The receiver may be a
part of an audience in a public speaking event, a reader of a letter or a driver who reads
road signs. The receiver is expected to listen or read carefully, to be aware of different
kinds of sender to jot down information when needed, to provide response and to ask
questions for clarification.
v. Feedback
In any communication scenario, a feedback is essential to confirm recipient
understanding. Feedbacks, like messages, are expressed in varied forms. A simple nod for
a question of verification is considered a feedback. Thus, feedbacks may be written,
spoken or acted out.

vi. Environment
The place, the feeling the mood, the mindset and the condition of both sender and
receiver are called the environment. The environment may involve the physical set-up of
a location where communication takes place, the space occupied by both the sender and
the receiver, including the objects surrounding the sender and the receiver.

MODULE 1 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION Learning Plans

vii. Context
Context involves the expectations of the sender and the receiver and the common or
shared understanding through the environmental signals.

viii. Interference
Interference is also known as barrier or block that prevents effective communication to
take place.
Kinds of Interference
i. Psychological barriers are thoughts that hamper the message to be interpreted correctly
by the receiver.
ii. Physical barriers include competing stimulus, weather and climate, health and ignorance
of the medium.
iii. Linguistic and cultural barriers pertain to the language and its cultural environment.
Words may mean another in different cultures.
iv. Mechanical barriers are those raised by the channels employed for interpersonal, group or
mass communication. These include cellphones, laptops and other gadgets used in
communication.
Communication Models
Aristotle’s Communication Model
Aristotle emphasized that there are three variables in the communication process:
Speaker, Speech, and Audience.

Laswell’s Communication Model

In 1948, Harold Dwight Laswell described communication as being focused on the
following Ws: Who says What in Which channel to Whom and with What effect.

MODULE 1 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION Learning Plans

Shannon-Weaver’s Communication Model

Claude Elwood Shannon and Warren Weaver’s model of communication was introduced
in 1949, a year after Laswell’s, for Bell Laboratories. Originally, it was conceptualized for the
functioning of the radio and television serving as a model for technical communication and,
later on, adopted in the field of communication. In this model, other components such as noise,
reception, destination, and feedback have been identified. Other terms such as information
source of the sender, transmitter for the encoder, decoder (reception), and receiver
(destination) were introduced.

Information Transmitter Reception Destination

Noise
Feedback
Berlo’s Communication Model
David Berlo’s model conceptualized in 1960 is probably the most well-known among the
communication models. Initially, Berlo’s model was called SMCR which stands for sender of the
message, sent through a channel or medium to a receiver. However, it was modified later on to
include noise, hence the acronym SMCRN.
The major variables involved in the communication process are (1) source, (2) message,
(3) channel, and (4) receiver.

MODULE 1 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION Learning Plans

The Nine Principles of effective Communication

Michael Osborn (2009) claims that communication must meet certain standards for
effective communication to take place.
i. Clarity
Clarity makes speeches understandable.

ii. Concreteness
Concreteness reduces misunderstandings.

iii. Courtesy
Courtesy builds goodwill.

iv. Correctness
Glaring mistakes in grammar obscures the meaning of a sentence.
v. Consideration
Messages must be geared towards the audience.

vi. Creativity
Creativity in communication means having the ability to craft interesting
messages in terms of sentence structure and word choice.

vii. Conciseness
Simplicity and directness help you to be concise.

viii. Cultural Sensitivity

Today, with the increasing emphasis on empowering diverse cultures, lifestyles,
and races and the pursuit for gender equality, cultural sensitivity becomes an
important standard for effective communication.

ix. Captivating
You must strive to make messages interesting to command more attention and
better responses.
Principles of Effective Oral Communication
i. Be clear with your purpose. You should know by heart your objective in communicating.
ii. Be complete with the message you deliver. Make sure that your claims are supported by
facts and essential information
iii. Be concise. You do not need to be verbose or wordy with your statements. Brevity in
speech is a must.
MODULE 1 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION Learning Plans

iv. Be natural with your delivery. Punctuate important words with the appropriate gestures
and movements. Exude a certain degree of confidence even if you do not feel confident
enough.
v. Be specific and timely with your feedback. Inputs are most helpful when provided on
time.
Principles of Effective Written Communication: The 7Cs
i. Be clear – Be clear with your message. Always be guided by your purpose in
communicating.
ii. Be concise – Always stick to the point and do not beat or run around the bush. Be brief
by focusing on your main point.
iii. Be concrete – support your claims with enough facts. Your readers will easily know if
you are bluffing or deceiving them because there is nothing to substantiate your claims.
iv. Be correct – it is important that you observe grammatical correctness in your writing.
Always have time to revise and edit your work. Even simple spelling errors may easily
distract your readers.
v. Be coherent – your writing becomes coherent when you convey a logical message. The
ideas should be connected to each other and related to the topic. Make sure that you
observe a sound structure that will present a smooth flow of your ideas. Use transitional
or cohesive devices so that the ideas cohere with one another.
vi. Be complete – include all necessary and relevant information so that the audience will not
be left wanting of any information. Always place yourself in the shoes of the audience,
who is always interested to receive new information.
vii. Be courteous – the tone of your writing should be friendly. Avoid any overtone/undertone
or insinuation to eliminate confusion and misinterpretation.
Ethics of Communication
Communication ethics emphasizes that morals influence the behavior of an individual,
group or organization thereby affecting their communication.
Be guided by the following to achieve ethical communication:
i. Establish an effective value system that will pave the way for the development of your
integrity as a person. One’s behavior and decision-making style affect, in turn, the
operations of an organization.

ii. Provide complete and accurate information. Whether it is needed or not, the data you
provide should always be contextualized and correct.

iii. Disclose vital information adequately and appropriately. Never conceal or hide
information that are necessary for purpose of transparency.
MODULE 1 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION Learning Plans

Ethical Considerations in Communication

Ethics is a branch of philosophy that focuses on issues of right and wrong in human
affairs.
Ethical communicators:
i. Respect audience.
ii. Consider the result of communication.
iii. Value truth.
iv. Use information correctly.
v. Do not falsify information.

Introduction

This module introduces you to the different forms and modes of communication. It will
give you an overview of the things that are necessary in the communication process. The
various modes of communication are face-to-face, video, audio, and text-based.
With the rapid rise and spread of Internet connectivity, the old forms of communication
have given way to new ones that make communication easier and faster.
Each tool has its own strengths and weaknesses. Whatever tool is use, it is important to
always be responsible in conveying ideas or delivering messages.

INPUT
In Chapter 1, Unit 3 you learned about communication types. Note that this topic
overlaps with the lesson on communication mode which is the focus of this unit. Thus, it is
important for you to know how communication types and modes complement each other to
achieve good communication.
COMMUNICATION MODES
Introduction
Communication Mode refers to the channel through which one expresses his/her
communicative intent. It is the medium through which one conveys his/her thoughts. Views or
MODULE 2 MODES OF COMMUNICATION Learning Plans
feelings can be communicated through face-to-face interaction, video, or audio. The mode may
also be text-based.
i. Face-to-face Interaction
It is an informal or casual conversation between two or more people. People engage in
social conversations to establish relationships or maintain them. It is one way of gaining
new acquaintances or friends. How to speak, what to speak, when to speak, and to whom
one is speaking are all important considerations of building relationships.
Dau Voire suggests: “Be brave enough to start a conversation that matters.”
Margaret J. Wheatly states: “All social change begins with a conversation.”
ii. Video
Web cameras are used so that two or more people who cannot interact face-to-face can
communicate. If there are no technical glitches encountered, this could be a very effective
mode of communication especially for people separated by distance.

While this is a convenient communication mode for people who want to reach out to each
other despite distance, a disadvantage is the time zone difference between countries. In
this case, one of them should make the necessary adjustments to pave the way for
successful communication.

iii. Audio
Audio means transmitted sound. Thus, this mode of communication, only the voice of the
speaker is heard. Ordinarily, someone’s voice is heard through the telephone or an
answering machine when the other party is not able to answer a call.

An obvious downside of this mode is not being able to see the body language or cues of
the person you are talking to.
The audio communication mode is quite difficult especially if you are listening to people
with different accents.

iv. Text-based Communication

Examples for this mode are e-mails, facsimile, text messaging, and instant messaging.
Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram likewise offer text-
based interaction. While text-based communication mode does not originally provide
video and audio benefits, it has a wider reach and can disseminate information to a bigger
audience quickly.
The last three modes are all virtual in nature. Those engaged in communication are able to hear
and/or see each other in real time simulating the actual physical setting.

INPUT
Communication in Social Media
There are various modes through which we communicate with each other. In the past,
these modes took the form of handwritten messages, typewritten messages, short telegrams,
computer-encoded texts, as well as landline telephone conversations, and audio/ video-
recorded messages. Because each mode of communication is distinct from the other, the ways
in which we craft our messages differ. For example, there is a greater tendency for us to write a
longer, more visually detailed message if we encode it using a computer. If we handwrite the
same message, or deliver it through an audio-recording, the message will not be the same.
Today, with the rapid rise and spread of Internet connectivity, the old forms of
communication have given away to new forms that make communication easier and faster.
Read the following news report about the use of social media in the Philippines.
PINOYS TOP SOCIAL MEDIA USERS, ACCORDING TO STUDY
By Miguel R. Camus (2017)

i. Filipinos spend more time on social media sites than anyone else in the world, going online
roughly four hours and 17 minutes a day, according to a report released on Tuesday.
ii. Filipinos spend most of their online time on sites such as Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter,
said the report, called Digital in 2017, and prepared by social media platform Hootsuite and
United Kingdom-based consultancy We Are Social Ltd.

US AMONG BOTTOM HALF

iii. Brazilians and Argentinians followed closely behind, spending three hours and 43 minutes
and three hours and 32 minutes on social media, respectively, the report said.
iv. The United States, where many of these social media players were founded, is among the
bottom half. With Americans spending an average of just two hours and six seconds per day.
The least active were the Japanese, who log on an average of just 40 minutes daily.

581 million people.
DIGITAL CONNECTIVITY

xvi. The total internet penetration rate stood at 50 percent, or 3.77 billion people, the report
showed.
xvii. “Half of the world’s population is now online, which is a testament to the speed with which
digital connectivity is helping to improve people’s lives,” said Simon Kemp, a consultant at
we Are Social.

MODULE 2 MODES OF COMMUNICATION Learning Plans

xviii. “The increase in internet users in developing economics is particularly encouraging,”

Kemp added.
xix. The report complies data from the world’s largest studies of online behavior, conducted by
organizations including GlobalWebIndex, GSMA Intelligence, Statista, and Akamai in “a
comprehensive state” of social media reference.
