Assignment 1

NAME: __Miles M. Yordan_______________________  SECTION:  MM2B 2ndyear

1. Here are some ETHICAL AND LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS in retailing. What do you
think of these issues?
 Should a retailer sell merchandise that it suspects was made using child
labor?
 Having children work seems wrong but you don’t help these kids by kicking them out of
the factory. There parents who can’t afford to send them to school with their income, and
they may not be able to feed them without the child’s income. Otherwise they would
starve or have to recourse to even worse jobs, like begging, prostitution, drug dealing
and illegal work under even worse conditions.
 Should a retailer advertise that its prices are the lowest available in the
market even though some items are not?
 No, the retailer should have the correct product details like price and availability so as to
prevent the consumer from having unfair trade practices. It is the right of the consumer
to be aware of a false and misleading advertising which deceives the consumers.

 Should a retail buyer accept an expensive gift from a vendor?

  It depends on the reasons behind the giving. Is the gift in hope of getting something
back or is it because the person deserves a gift? People who have business relationship
has to do with social psychological phenomena called Social Reciprocity. This is the
idea that when you give someone something, they will give you something in return. This
is often described as “Utang na loob” in Filipino term. Ideally, a consumer should be free
to buy or not buy based on the value of the product or service, without even subtle
psychological manipulation. This is unfortunately seldom what happens.

 Should a retailer charge a supplier a fee to get a new item in its store?

 The retailer needs to charge a fee to the suppliers for the slotting fee to ensure your
products appear on the shelf in their stores.
 Should a retailer promote a product as being “on sale” if it never sold a
higher, nonsale price?

 Lowering prices to increase sales also lowers the profit margin you make on each unit
that you sell. On the other hand, much of the time lower prices will lead to higher sales
volumes, which may make up for the lower profit margin.

 Should a retailer disclose product information that may affect whether or

not it is purchased?
 Yes, It's important to know your rights when you're trying to resolve a deal with a retailer.
But people often make the wrong assumptions about what the laws allow, or they rely on
misinformation from friends, family, etc.

social and economic activities.

THE ROLE OF RETAILERS IN OUR DAILY LIVING AND HOW IT AFFECTS OUR SOCIAL
AND ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

OUR SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

Retailers, retailers and retailers. You've probably heard these terms before, but what do they
mean? Retail trade is, by definition, the sale of goods or services of a company to a consumer
for its own use. A retail store deals with small volumes of goods, while wholesalers handle
large-scale purchases of goods. Retail stores should not be confused with online stores.
Products must be sold directly to a consumer for their end-users from a single point. A retailer is
a person or company where you buy goods. Retailers generally do not produce their own items.
They buy products from a manufacturer or wholesaler and sell these products in small quantities
to consumers. Retailing is the process of selling a retailer that purchases goods or services and
sells them for customer use. This process is explained by the supply chain.

The Social Impact

Consumers increasingly consider the social impact of the money they spend. Some will pay
more to support retailers who assert sustainable practices, for instance, by buying products
made with recycled material. Others avoid companies notorious for irresponsible or unethical
practices, such as outsourcing manufacturing to exploitative sweatshops in under-developed
countries. Businesses must consider the ethical and social ramifications of their actions, as well
as the actions of their suppliers. A manufacturer’s negative publicity, for example, could hurt
sales in every retail store it supplies.
The Economic Impact

Retail sales are an important economic indicator because consumer spending drives much of
our economy. Think of all of the people and companies involved in producing, distributing, and
selling the goods you use on a daily basis like food, clothes, fuel, and so on. Retailing has a
tremendous impact on the economy. It involves high annual sales and employment. As a major
source of employment retailing offers a wide range of career opportunities including; store
management, merchandising and owning a retail business.
