The Cree Product Characterisation Tool (PCT) allows you to select from
multiple lighting-system design parameters to compare up to three LED
models simultaneously.

For all valid LED drive currents, the PCT quickly and easily does the following:

G Shows all critical LED design parameters, such as luminous flux and
efficacy, for selected LED models
G Performs de-rating calculations based on junction temperature (Tj)
G Calculates LED valuations, such as lumens / cost
G Estimates simple LED design parameters, such as the number of LEDs
required and total power consumption

Moonstone™ High Power LED Modules - White & Colour

LIGHTING CLASS LEDS

Avago Moonstone™ High Power RGB LED Modules are the industry’s first Plug and Play RGB LED Light Source
which can be operated at high driving current. The built-in heat sink and the mechanical mounting features simplify
the thermal management of a lighting solution. This enables effective heat transfer and maintain LED junction
below maximum allowed temperature.

The footprint of the top emitting package is 100mm x 18mm x 3.6mm with aperture of 96mm x 6mm. The footprint
of side emitting package is 100mm x 18mm x 8mm with aperture of 96mm x 4.6mm.
The reflector cavity design maximises the light extraction as well as maximising the colour mixing to produce the
required colour. Together with closely pitched LED dice, the colour mixing is best of its class.

LED DRIVERS
High brightness LEDs are rapidly becoming a prominent source of lighting and have better efficiency and reliability when compared to
conventional light sources. While LEDs can operate from an energy source as simple as a battery and resistor, most applications require an
efficient energy source not only for the reduction of losses, but also for the lumen maintenance of the LED itself.

DRIVER ICs
Zetex
LED DRIVERS

of just four components and by operating at switching frequencies up to 600kHz, enable the use of smaller and
lower cost inductors and capacitors.

Power Integrations
Power Integrations offers a broad range of highly integrated high-voltage ICs for use in LED lighting applications
where designers require offline power supplies at universal input line cord voltages – 85 VAC to 265 VAC.

Intersil
Intersil offers a broad range of LED driver products to support solid state lighting applications, ranging from
portable battery powered products to AC line powered applications. The following products are optimized for
driving high current, high brightness LEDs such as the Cree XLamp Series, while having a low nominal forward
voltage of 3.3 V.

Super High Brightness LEDs in a spotlight to many thousands of HB-LEDs in large arrays, from either AC-Mains
or Batteries. ST's extensive lighting portfolio includes Power Factor Controller ICs, Power Discretes, Micro
Controllers, and monolithic DC LED drivers.

Microchip
Microchip provide a comprehensive range of efficient solutions to drive LEDs adding intelligence to all HB-LED
lighting applications. Microchip presents two types of LED driver solutions. First, an analog driver IC can be used
independently or together with a MCU for added intelligence. Second, the LED drive function can be integrated
into the MCU application.

SECONDARY OPTICS
Secondary optics are optical elements used in addition to the LED’s primary optic to shape
the LED’s light output in either single or cluster form. The first steps in selecting the best
secondary optics for an application is to determine what illumination levels you want to
achieve and over what area. Once you know how much light you need, it is then possible
to decide what type of LED is required and how many.
SECONDARY OPTICS

Anglia Lighting offers these optical elements from four leading suppliers:

Carclo
technical plastics
Carclo’s optical division is a specialist in the design and development of lenses and optics which
manage the light output of LEDs from Cree, as well as those from other manufacturers. They have a
highly qualified optical design team which focuses on providing the customer with the best possible
function/aesthetic design of an optical component in plastic.

LEDIL
LEDIL design and manufacture standard and customer-specific optical elements, LED lenses, optics
and lighting products, opto-electronic modules and complete optical products. They can offer a
standard plastic lens solution for most of the power LEDs being sold in the world, from micro lenses to
large collimators, giving a variety of illumination patterns.

Polymer Optics
POL design optics for use with world leading LEDs and have a comprehensive selection of standard
products whilst providing custom made optics to suit customers’ specific applications. The Polymer
Optics standard range comprises of wide variety of types suitable for LEDs from Cree and Avago.

Avago
Avago offers the ASMT-M0xx series of collimating lenses, which have been designed to efficiently collimate
the light of their Moonstone High Power LEDs into a 6°, 15° and 30° beam.

LIGHTING INTERCONNECT
The advent of LED lighting has given rise to the need for a new range of connectors that offer fast and reliable termination.

AVX Elco
ELCO CONNECTORS ELCO has a long history as a world class supplier of high quality electronic connectors and
interconnection systems. As part of AVX, ELCO is committed to providing one of the broadest and
most technologically advanced product lines, which includes wire-to-board and board-to board
connector ranges designed specifically for the LED lighting industry.

THERMAL PRODUCTS
One of the most important factors to consider during the design of a lighting system using LEDs is how are you going to control and get rid
of the heat which is generated. Using our experience we are able to recommend the best thermal solution for your application using products
from six leading manufacturers.

It is not always necessary to use sophisticated thermal products. Sometimes standard FR4 may be suitable. One of the most important

THERMAL PRODUCTS
features of CREE XLamp LEDs is their electrically neutral thermal path. This feature allows the light fixture to make use of FR4 PCB with
thermal vias, which is 8 to 10 times less expensive than MCPCB.

Aluminium Heatsinks
Probably one of the most obvious and simple ways of cooling electronic components, however some thought
needs to be applied to how you will interface the LED to the heatsink. Generally there will be a PCB between the
LED and the heatsink, which means various thermal interface materials need to be employed to enable the
efficient transfer of heat from the LED to the heatsink whilst maintaining electrical isolation.
Traditionally heatsinks employ either an aluminium or copper material hence the need for thermal interface
materials to provide electrical isolation.

Ceramic Heatsinks
A further type of heatsink is also available which uses a ceramic material that is electrically neutral and does not
require electrically isolated thermal interface materials. In some cases the LEDs can be mounted directly onto
the heatsink meaning no PCB is required. These ceramic heatsinks are useful in applications where a much
higher thermal performance is required. We are happy to offer advice on the use of these materials.

Heatpipes
A more efficient way of removing heat is by using a heatpipe, which allows you to remove large amounts of heat
whilst only requiring a relatively small surface area compared to a traditional heatsink. The heatpipe works using
a combination of vapour, condensing and capillary action all contained within a sealed pipe which has fins
attached to further aid cooling. Anglia are able to offer thermal solutions utilising this technology.

Metal Clad Printed Circuit Boards (MCPCB)

MCPCBs offer one of the most effective methods of thermal management for lighting designs utilising LEDs.
MCPCBs comprise of 3 main components;
1 - Copper conductor layer where the LEDs are mounted.
2 - Insulator; a very thin thermally conductive but electrically isolated laminate material.
3 - Metal cladding - a sheet of aluminium or copper substrate which dissipates the heat produced by the LEDs.
These MCPCBs also allow easy interface to a heatsink or the outer housing of the customers application
to aid cooling further.

Fans
NMB-Minebea offer a full range of Radial Fans and Blowers, which can be used in combination with the other
thermal technologies mentioned above to increase the thermal performance of your application even further.

Get in touch and we will help you make the right choice for your LED lighting application.
