CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Background of the Study

Our world has changed dramatically after the inauguration

of the COVID-19 Pandemic last summer. The virus spreads

greatly every day and caused a lot of changes in our daily

lives including our nation’s learning system. The pandemic

has brought mandatory regarding the wearing of masks and to

stay home as much as we could to help control the spread of

the virus. So to make the learning possible, our national

education institution introduces the new learning systems

that we should use during the pandemic which is to be the E-

learning. It is a type of educational system which we use

electronics, gadgets, and networks as our medium to get

connected and learn even in distance.

It is defined as the use of information and communication

technologies in diverse processes of education to support

and enhance learning in institutions of higher education,

and includes the usage of information and communication

technology as a complement to traditional classrooms, online

learning or mixing the two modes(OECD, 2005). Also according

to Wentling et al (2000), the e-learning depends on

computers and networks, but it is likely it will progress


into systems comprising of a variety of channels such as

wireless and satellite, and technologies such as cellular

phones.

The current virus predicament has brought a lot of

changes in the world. It affects different aspects in

people’s lives including the academic learning systems.

Thereby, students have required to stay at home as a safety

precaution. It is, for the fact, that virus can cause harm

and nuisance for the health of the students if remain

outside and continue the face-to-face classes. As the

comprehensive learning management systems usually cost an

arm and a leg, teachers and students today have to use

numerous digital tools to deliver e-learning. Thus, many

students have been struggling to this mode of learning for

it provides massive difficulties and struggles.

This E-learning brings about changes to the students in

how they learn in different ways which should be difficult

for them to adjust. This study will seek to find the

difficulties that students are facing in this new learning

system and that will be necessary for all the people to

know, so that they will be aware of what is going on to the

students right now in this time of pandemic. This study is

also important to conduct, so that the researchers can give


a solution for the students’ difficulties and for them to

realize that they should not give up on studying despite of

their hardship.

Hence, this research has been developed to identify,

examine and to provide better understanding to the

difficulties students are facing. The general objective of

this study is to know the difficulties that the students are

facing in the new learning system caused by the pandemic.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to know the difficulties that the

selected senior high school students are facing in the new

learning system at the Holy Cross College.

Specifically, intend to answer the following questions.

1. How may the profile of the respondents affects in

terms of:

1.1 Gender

1.2 Age

1.3 Economic Status

1.4 Learning Modality

2. Difficulties respondents faced in the new learning

system in terms of:

2.1 Time management


2.2 Way of teaching

2.3 Answering activities

2.4 Lack of resources for online class

2.5 Environmental Condition

2.6 Parent’s support

Scope and Delimitation

This study aims to determine the difficulties faced by

the selected students in the new learning system.

This study was conducted via online through survey at

Holy Cross College, Sta. Rosa, Nueva Ecija, Philippines and

this study also limits its coverage on the selected Senior

High School students only. This study only contains

questions that must be answered based on the difficulties of

the respondents.

The researchers conducted this study during the first

semester of the Academic year 2020-2021.

Significance of the Study

The purpose of this study is to know the difficulties

faced by the selected Senior High School students in the new

learning system. Also, this research aims to give

information and knowledge to other people about what are the


experiences of the students during the new way of learning

because of covid 19.

The beneficiaries of this study are the following:

To the students - They can use this study for them to learn

the different solutions to their similar problem that they

face that this research paper recommends. This study can

also be their basis in the future if they want to know the

difficulties of the students in studying during covid 19

pandemic.

To the teachers - This research paper will help them to know

how this new learning system affects their students in

studying. This study will also help them to think about what

they can do to lessen the hardship of their students.

To the parents - This study will benefit the students’

parents to be aware what their children are experiencing in

the new mode of learning so that they can do something to

lessen it.

To the school management - They’re going to be informed that

the new way of learning brings a lot of difficulties to

their students and trough that they can provide seminar to

the teachers to give them further knowledge about how they

can help their students to their difficulties.


To the future researchers - They will have an idea and

overview on how to make a research paper and they can use

this study as a guide on making a research paper.
