Topic 2: How to Choose A thesis Title

INTRODUCTION

A study needs to have direction. It should be anchored onto something that is aligned to
the field of future career. Civil engineering is a vast practice where modern thinking can
make simple and usual things be more creative and innovative or inventive.

Specific Learning Outcomes:


At the end of the chapter the students would be able to:
• Make at least three title proposal and present it to the Panel
• Choose one final Title

If you were make something out of these materials what would it be?

Would you be creative enough to make use of it in engineering purposes?

What part of the following structure do you know? What innovations can you suggest?

CONCEPTS

Think of what you wanted to do in order to make a change. Either an invention or an


innovation would do.

Invention: something that has never been made before, or


the process of creating something that has never been made before.
Innovation: (the use of) a new idea or method.

Although the final thesis title should be at the end, atleast make a problem statement that shall
bring direction to your study.

The first thing that a reader will see is your thesis title so it is very crucial to provide a concise view
of the topic that your thesis address. Thesis title should be crafted carefully and may change
overtime during the course of writing thesis paper.

Here are some tips on how to make a good thesis title:

• Thesis title should not be uninteresting even the topic is specific. It should be carefully
worded as the arguments and research contained in the thesis paper.
• Seek advice from your professor, classmates and friend on choosing the right thesis title.
Present your list of your favorite thesis title and ask them which appeals to them most.
• Make sure to follow a right format based on your school requirements. The main format
of thesis title is generally describing your thesis work.
• Do not write the final thesis title at the beginning of writing your thesis work.
• Thesis title should be informative that your reader captures attention. It should provide a
clear picture of your research.
• Acronym, abbreviations and initials are not allowed in thesis title.
• Thesis title should be precise and concise that will surely explain the nature of your work.
It should be directly relate to the topic to be able to get the information quickly.
