Alex was “able to participate in some forms of inter-species communication”. Alex was
capable of demonstrating more than simply the ability to imitate human speech patterns.t
In this article by Aimee Lamoureux, she explains Alex’s intelligence and how he was
capable of demonstrating more than simply the ability to imitate human speech.

The article also said that Irene Pepperberg used a type of training technique known as
the Model/Rival Technique, to prove that Alex understood and responded the questions,
rather than responding to the trainer’s behavior. As consequence Alex learned many word
and classify objects.
According to the article Alex not only learned to mimic repetitive sounds, he had
a vocabulary of up to 150 words, he was able to identify different objects, recognize
quantities, and could distinguish between seven different colors and five different shapes.
