Q.No.1
Explain what a dew point is. Consider a gas mixture at 911 mmHg(1.21 bar) with 50 mol-%
benzene and 50 mol-% toluene.
What is the dewpoint temperature and what is the composition of the first liquid drop?
Solution:
The dew point of a vapor is the point where the vapor just begins to condense.
In the problem, pressure is given and we want to find the dew point temperature, which is how far
we must cool the vapor before it starts condensing. Since we have saturation, we have at the dew
point that,
Σixi = xA + xB = 1
Combining gives,
Here, yA = 0.5, yB = 0.5 and p = 911 mmHg are given, so there is only one unknown, which is the
temperature T. Some trial and error and interpolation is generally needed: For example, one may
plot xA + xB from (1) as a function of T and find where it crosess 1. However, in this case it seems like
T = 378.2K is very close to the correct answer, because we then get
= 1.0035
which is close to 1. The corresponding liquid composition (in the first droplet) is (after dividing by
1.0035 to normalize):
xA = 0.2963
xB = 0.7037
