PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION 02-19-19

PRESIDENT RODRIGO ROA DUTERTE’S SPEECH

IN PHILLIPIINES-CHINA TRADE AND INVESTMENT FORUM

President Duterte’s rousing speech was indeed a success but clearly there is something in
his style that makes him one of the most admirable Presidents. But is it really how we project
and address his speech or was it only because he has a respective name that makes him
admirable? Let us jot down and know how good speaker the President of the Philippines is.

In order for someone to be an efficient speaker, they should be following the Principle of
Effective Communication. In the case of Pres. Duterte’s speech, there are several times we heard
some inaudible words or unclear words that we couldn’t understand and because of that it may
result to misunderstanding of what the speaker really meant so the speaker should be clear when
delivering a speech, Pres. Duterte came from Davao and have a really distinct accent that is why
maybe he is having a hard time to speak the English language. It would make him more credible
if the words he states are clear. Moving on, the speech of Pres. Duterte was also in a bit of
indirect although the point of the speech was clearly told. At first, he was comparing us Filipinos
to the Americans then somewhat he started talking about his flight travel in country and started
attacking the American’s attitude towards Filipinos and many more as we heard, maybe he really
want to have a strike against the Americans having these points taken then expressing his
partnership in China while ending the friendship between the Philippines and United States. The
point here is another principle of an effective communication is that the speaker should be direct
to the point, be straight to the topic that you are delivering and don’t go around or outside of it
because it makes the audience confuse of what we really want to tell, it is good to be more direct
and be straightaway to your topic to understand what we really want to express.

Now enough from the negative sides of Pres. Duterte’s speech, let us now move on to the
positive sides. The purpose of his speech as we heard, clearly is to owe money from China to
complete the on-going projects in our country. This is a good thing, speaker should know what is
the purpose of what he want to say or to express although it is stated a while ago that he was
indirect on his speech, he was clearly have the purpose on his message. Another good thing is
that Pres. Duterte’s speech was a rousing speech, it because of he is well-known for using slang
and offensive words that clearly seem enjoyed by the audience who listens to him. At his speech,
there are several times the people have laughed and applauded him. Having a sense of humour is
also another principle that makes the speaker more enjoyable and exciting to listen to. It gives
the audience an element of excitement and because of the light mood, the audience tend to
understand more what the speaker wanted to express.

Being a good speaker for me, we should really take time to learn the topic of the speech
we want to deliver for us to be more prepared, credible and be a more effective speaker. We
should also stick on our topic and avoid getting away with it so that the audience would not
experience an information overload and get confused to our speech. Also, we should have a lot
of self-confidence so we should practice and practice until we deliver it in the most proper way
we can. Have a sense of humour also, it will help us to lighten up the mood so that we can
deliver our speech smoothly with no regrets. Be prepared also on some arguments that may arise
so be careful to the choice of words to avoid being offensive at some point in delivering the
speech. Having these qualities can make us a great speaker, but also we should be reminded by
ourselves that we gain more knowledge in listening so for us to be one of the most efficient
speaker, we should also learn to be a great listener. That’s all.
