so that we may be able to follow the music while we listen.
8- An art piece of your choice that represents who you are. (e.g. music, pictures, dance
etc)
9-Give Mr. Carvallo your e-portfolio address

Soundscape Assignment
Students will break into small groups (3-4). Each group will agree on a specific
location’s soundscape to record and use as a backdrop for a more traditional piece of
music.

Each group most record a two to three minute segment of the agreed upon soundscape
and then compose a more traditional duet/trio or quartet that changes the way this
soundscape is listened to. Of course, the composition will also be effected by the
presence of the soundscape.

The compositions can be performed in two ways

1) live performance on instruments with soundscape played through stereo, or
2) both parts mixed together on garage band or similar music software and
played through stereo

Mr. Carvallo
The presentations will take place during your portfolio presentation
- if you require a portable recorder, arrangements must be made with me
- rehearsals and work must be done during class time and are available to be
booked after school

Scoring movie, dance

Find a movie clip of your choice and compose 5 minutes worth of music for that section. You may
use a dance clip or create your own movie scene.
I suggest using movie maker, or imovie in conjunction with your favourite music software such as
Finale.

Final arrangement/ or original composition

This is an individual assignment that will require some out of class work. Each student will
arrange an existing song (chords and melody) for one of the following RHSA ensembles; senior
band, junior band, orchestra, choir, etc.
This assignment is to practice arranging skills such as harmonization of a melody, voicing of
chords (closed four, drop two, drop three, smooth voice leading, etc.), choosing instrumentation
(when to use what instruments, various doubling), as well as use of form.

Mr. Carvallo
I will also be looking at your use of class time. This is a self directed assignment and as such I
expect everyone to find what they are working on and not to just sit around or leave the class
without explanation.

There will be five components to this assignment:

1) Lead sheet with melody and chords.

2) Written/diagramed plan of arrangement – this is a full song plan of instrumentation,

voicings, rhythms, melodic fragments, countermelodies, and other ideas.

3) Rough draft (after finishing score must be emailed to me)

4) Final Version (must be completed after comments/suggestions)

5) Written report/reflection about what revisions you made according to the process,
roadblocks, comments and what suggestions you didn’t adhere to. And why you didn’t.
E-Portolio Presentations

This is a Major Assignment. Due dates are as follows (week of). Numbers correspond to the
above components;
1) Thursday April 21
2) Friday May 6
3) Friday May 13
4) Friday May 20
5) Friday May 27

You will be marked on a written plan and your score. Note that the written plan mark will consist
of components 1 and 2 above and the score will be marked with consideration to components 3,
4 and 5.

For example, when can I expect to receive the assignments? I
suggest that you put it on a calendar for me and for yourself.
