2.6.3 Radar Overlay
Radar overlay has input for one set of radar signals. Radar Overlay can be used to read
picture from three different radar transceivers, because it has two status inputs which change
following characteristics of the Radar Overlay:
• video gain operating area (low and high voltage)
• FTC adjust operating area (low and high voltage)
• STC adjust operating area (low and high voltage)
• STC curve length and shape
• number of azimuth pulses per 360º
• radar antenna headline detector offset
• radar trigger range offset
• offset of the radar antenna from the conning position
Following characteristics of the Radar Overlay are common for all radar transceivers:
• video polarity (positive or negative) and impedance (hi-Z or 75Ω)
• trigger active edge (positive or negative) and impedance (hi-Z or 75Ω)
• headline polarity (positive or negative)
• HI and LO video detection level difference

If you want to utilise multiple radar transceivers, then you must build outside the ECDIS an inter
switch for radars, which reports to the status inputs of Radar Overlay the radar transceiver
currently in use.
See more details in chapters about Hardware installation and Parameters.

2.6.4.6 ARPA Radars

In the Display field you can select ARPA

radar displays one by one and define if it is
in use etc. Rest of edit boxes are for all the
radars in order to define Reference target
tracking general parameters.

Identification and sends id -fields are used

to select indirectly radar antenna offsets
from Conning position which is defined as
Conning position in General parameters
page. In the example above ARPA radar
display 1 send identifier 1, if it is connected
to Radar1 defined in Radar overlay
parameter page, and ARPA radar display 1
send identifier 2, if it is connected to Radar2
defined in Radar overlay parameter page.

There are 3 basic device interface

alternatives:

1) Device interface IMO IEC 61162-1 uses

TTM message for ARPA radar target
data receive interface and OSD message
for ARPA radar speed and course
receive. It sends standard ECGLL,
ECDPT and ECMVW messages to the
ARPA radar.
2) Device interface FURUNO: IEC 61162-1
includes all standard messages for an
ARPA radar target data receive interface.
Besides it contain also a lot proprietary
messages supporting integrated
navigation features such as user charts,
routes, curved ebl, etc.
3) Device interfaces of type Selesmar
Status nn bytes are all related with
different models of Selesmar ARPA
radars which are using proprietary binary
messages.

2.6.4.7 Position Equipment

Below is an example of DGPS receiver with talker identifier GP defined for both GGA and VTG
messages

Below is an example of GPS receiver with ignored talker identifiers for both GLL and VTG
messages

102 • Installation Technical Manual ECDIS EC 1000

Below is an example of Syledis receiver

NOTES:
• talker identifier can be separately defined for speed and course (VTG-message) and for
position (GLL, GGA or PAT message). If talker identifier is defined as XX, then it is ignored.
• IEC 61162-1 GGA uses messages VTG and GGA. Recommended for DGPS. Correct
operation of a DGPS sensor requires that the system receives also VTG message. If no
VTG message is received then the system thinks that there is something wrong in the DGPS
and the system downgrades the DGPS as a ordinary GPS-sensor
• IEC 61162-1 PAT uses messages VTG, PAT and SHR,POS. Alternative for a DGPS which
gives also pitch and roll data.
• IEC 61162-1 GLL uses messages VTG and GLL. Recommended for non differential
position receivers.
• Use of differential signal with GPS can be detected with GGA and SHR,POS. A device
using identification GLL and device type 8 (= DGPS) will always be detected as differential
regardless of receiver status.
• Cmg delay is delay between own ship turning and course made good in the VTG-message
to detect turning. Typically values are from 0 to 15 seconds.
• Because no message has any datum indication, the user is responsible for used reference
system in position receiver. GGA message is supposed to be always in WGS-84, but
unfortunately some manufacturer does not follow standards.
• Only one of connected sensors is allowed to send ZDA message, which will be used to
adjust the system clock, if time difference is larger than 5 seconds and if the system is not a
part of steering (ie. mode is not Goto Wp, Goto Track or Program Track Turn) and if the
system has Kalman filter in OFF position.
• Offset from antenna position to Conning position is essential for speed, course, drift and
predictor related calculation.
• Roll&pitch receive enable is used only with PAT.
• First two channels could operate also as general purpose outputs. Checksum related
parameters are for outputs only. Sent messages are GLL, VTG and HDT. NOTE. Output
operation requires a SIF module instead of RIF module in A-Adapter.

receiving data from the Position receiver. Reason for missing position may be incorrect
settings of Position receiver set into the ECDIS Installation Parameters. Incorrect setting may
cause also incorrect position in the ECDIS. Use flow charts below to check parameters of

5. Failure mode analysis

5.1 Introduction
As ECDIS is very flexible for system composition, it is impossible to make one general failure
mode analysis for all possible cases. Therefore here is analysed one system which represents
minimum compositions.

5.2 Failure mode analysis of minimum system

Minimum ECDIS-system consist of:
• ECDIS processor
• A-Adapter
• ECDIS control panel
• ECDIS monitor
• Conning monitor
to which is connected:
• gyro compass of interface type IEC 61162-1
• speed log of interface type IEC 61162-1
• one radar display of interface type IEC 61162-1 (+ASPO/FEC extensions) or Selesmar
(Special protocol)
• two position receivers of interface type IEC 61162-1
• alarm transfer system receiving alarm condition

Technical Manual ECDIS EC 1000 Failure mode analysis • 177

FIG. 5.1. Minimum system.

178 • Failure mode analysis Technical Manual ECDIS EC 1000

5.2.1 External failures

5.2.1.1 Gyro compass fails

• outside of the system:

• gyro used for steering is the selected one for all the other purposes like
repeaters, radars, direction finder etc.
• all gyro repeaters follow failing gyro compass
• ECDIS generates "Alarm 4005 Gyro error". If ECDIS does not have any other heading
source selected (radar is a possible source), then ECDIS generates also "Alarm 2002 No
course available"

5.2.1.2 Speed log fails

• ECDIS generates "Alarm 4009 Dual axis log error"

• the system uses also position receivers as alternative speed source. So the system knows
smg also from position receivers. Nothing else than alarm happens
• If the ECDIS doesn't have any other speed source selected (radar or position receivers are
possible sources) then the ECDIS generates also "Alarm 2001 No speed available"

5.2.1.3 Radar display fails

• ECDIS generates "Alarm 2055 ARPA radar communication error"

• radar targets will be lost from the ECDIS chart

5.2.1.4 One of two position receivers fails while using together with Kalman-filter

5.2.1.4.1 Failure of type no signal

• ECDIS generates "Alarm 4012 Position equipment error" (for position receiver channel 1)
and "Alarm 4013 Position equipment error" (ch 2)

5.2.1.4.2 Failure of type wrong position

• system automatically excludes position receiver giving wrong position

5.2.1.5 All position receivers fails while using all together with Kalman filter

5.2.1.5.1 Failure of type no signal

• ECDIS generates alarms. Alarms are "4012 Position equipment error" (for position receiver
channel 1) and "4013 Position equipment error" (ch 2)
• ECDIS generates "Alarm 2000 Position unreliable" and system changes automatically to
backup deadreckoning based on log and gyro (if no log available then speed of backup
deadreckoning is based on last known speed before failure)

5.2.1.5.2 Failure of type non-equal wrong positions

• ECDIS generates "Alarm 2000 Position unreliable" and system changes automatically to
backup deadreckoning based on log and gyro (if no log available then speed of backup
deadreckoning is based on last known speed before failure)
• nothing else happens

5.2.1.5.3 Failure of type equal wrong positions

• like Failure of type wrong position, if check against log and gyro reveals a failure

Technical Manual ECDIS EC 1000 Failure mode analysis • 179

• in worst case the system does not detect failure. The worst case is when all position
receivers deviate so slowly to same wrong position that check against gyro and log cannot
detect deviation. This could be dangerous. Recommendation is that position receivers
should be different ie. using different method (like GPS and LORAN) or if using same
method (like two GPS) then at least different models (preferably from different
manufacturers)

5.2.2 Internal failures

5.2.2.1 Power supply fails

• no picture, equipment totally death

5.2.2.2 CPU fails

• like Power supply fails

5.2.2.3 Hard disk fails

• like Power supply fails

5.2.2.4 Floppy disk fails

• nothing happens immediately

• service engineer must replace internal floppy if he needs to do lowest level hardware service
like preformatting of a new hard disk. This kind of service requires anyhow a qualified
service engineer

5.2.2.5 Graphic adapter for chart fails

• like Power supply fails

5.2.2.6 Graphic adapter for conning fails

• no conning picture

5.2.2.7 CD-ROM fails

• nothing happens immediately

• any update or use of chart material which requires CD-ROM is impossible

5.2.2.8 LAN interface fails

• nothing happens because LAN interface is normally used for connection with separate
planning station, which is not part of minimum system. Also, if the system includes a
planning station, nothing happens, because LAN interface between the Navigation and the
Planning Station is only used with user activated Backup and Restore functions to move
chart, user chart, route, pilot data etc. information between the station

5.2.2.9 COM-channel for ECDIS control panel fails

• nothing happens immediately

180 • Failure mode analysis Technical Manual ECDIS EC 1000

• it is impossible for user to operate ECDIS
• it is possible to continue already selected route of any length until end, but it is impossible to
select alternative routes

5.2.2.10 SIO386 fails

1. Total failure
• "StandIns failure" System failure indication
• like Gyro compass fails, Speed log fails, Radar display fails and Failure of type no signal
together
2. One of 18 channels fails
A. 1 out of 2 position receiver input channels fails
• like Failure of type no signal.
B. Radar display channels fails
• like Radar display fails
C. Dual axis log channels fails
• like Speed log fails.

5.2.2.11 A-Adapter fails

1. 1 out of 8 channels fails

A. 1 out of 2 position receiver input channels fails
• like Failure of type no signal
B. Radar display channels fails
• like Radar display fails
C. Dual axis log channel fails
• like Speed log fails
2. Isolating Power supply fails
• like Gyro compass fails, Speed log fails, Radar display fails and Failure of type no signal
together
