3. Function and overview of each board

3.2 RX (05P0703)
The DSC watch keeping receiver PCB and DSC general watch keeping receiver PCB are the same PCB
and have the same specifications. This board is composed of a receiver (RF amplification to detection
circuit), synthesizer, and generator of self-test signal of this board.
“OVEN” voltage is supplied to the 36MHz reference oscillator, Y501 in the synthesizer circuit directly
from 24V ship’s mains. On/off status of oven voltage can be checked by the [OVEN] LED on the front
panel. Frequency of the receiver can be adjusted by changing the frequency of this reference oscillator,
but it does not require adjustment in principle. Error of receiving frequency is within +10Hz, using
AFSK signal output from the receiver: 1700Hz +85Hz.

Receiver circuit
Protection circuit
The receiver antenna input circuit is equipped with an excessive input protection circuit consisting of an
arrestor (E1) and diode (CR4 and CR5). CR4 and CR5 are operated at 18Vp-p, and E1 at 90Vp-p.
The input circuit can receive a signal of 30 Vrms for 15 minutes.

“ACTIVE ANT ” setting

12V DC power supply of the active receiver antenna (FAX-5) is output by setting the jumper plug of
P1(J3) for “ACTIVE”.

Signal flow
The DSC signal from the antenna (F +85Hz), passing through an HPF of 1.6MHz and LPF of 13.5MHz
or 27.5MHz composed of L/C, is RF amplified at Q2 and Q3 (voltage gain of 12dB approx.) and is
input to the frequency conversion circuit of CR6.
Here, the DSC signal of F +85Hz is converted into primary intermediate frequency 54.455MHz +85Hz,
using the local oscillator (F + 54.455MHz), and is input to U2 via FL1 (54.455MHz) and Q4 circuit.
U2, BA4116FV incorporates a MIX, IF, and detection circuits.
The signal of 54.455MHz +85Hz is converted into secondary intermediate frequency of 455kHz
+85Hz, using the second local oscillator (54MHz), further detected by the third local oscillator
(456.7KHz) to produce the AFSK signal of 1700Hz +85Hz.
This signal is amplified at the next stage BPF, U3 and U4, and is input to the modem circuit on the
CONTROL/MODEM board.
The input level is 0dBm, 600 ohms in standard, while DSC signal can be detected if input to the modem
circuit is more than -30dBm.
When the self-test is conducted, the carrier signal of 18MHz is combined between patterns and is input
to the antenna circuit. The input level is equal to approx. 0 dbuV of SG level.

Key points:
- Antenna input: J2B, F1B, F +85Hz, 0dBuV/50ohms, character error rate 1% or less
- AF output: AFSK 1700Hz +85Hz, 0dBm, 600 ohms

INST signal
When equipped with the DSC general watch keeping receiver PCB, the “J2-#1: INST” signal, turning
to “L” level, is input to the CONTROL/MODEM board.
The control section CPU (Main CPU) recognizes that the board is installed, and controls this board. If
this board is not installed, the CPU remotely controls the receiver of the MF/HF radiotelephone. The
DSC watch keeping receiver PCB does not use the INST signal.

SYN circuit
2Lo
Mixing at Q510 the frequency of the 36MHz reference oscillator and the output of “18MHz” dividing
the frequency 1/2 by U505, 2nd local oscillator generates 54MHz.

3Lo
3Lo is generated by the DDS, U506 and FL503 (455kHz, BPF) at the next stage.
Phase data is set from the main CPU to the DDS, and the signal of “456.7kHz” is output.
The phase data is shown by the formula below:

Phase data : K = (2n / DDS CLK) x DDS FOUT

= 108972865
n : Phase accumulator bit count of DDS = 32 bits
DDS CLK : 18,000,000Hz
DDS FOUT : 456,700Hz

1Lo
1Lo is the PLL circuit consisting of U501, DDS and U502, VCO generates the signal “F+54.455MHz”
The DDS output frequency, about 6MHz is set to the PLL reference frequency, and frequency dividing
ratio of the PLL and reference frequency from the DDS are set according to preset frequency informa-
tion, by there generating required frequency.
Relation between DDS and PLL oscillation frequency is:

- DDS output frequency : fo = (K x fc) / 2n

fc : DDS CLK (18MHz)
n : DDS phase accumulator bit count (32 bits)
K : DDS phase data input (Frequency data of 32 bits from CPU)

- PLL oscillation frequency : 1Lo = (fo x N) / M

Comparison frequency divider : N (54 to 84) (frequency data from CPU)
Reference frequency divider : M (Fixed at 6)

The PLL (VCO) oscillates between 56.0615MHz and 81.955MHz with setting frequencies of
1.6065MHz to 27.5MHz. The oscillation frequency range of 30MHz approximately cannot cover by a
single VCO. For that reason, the oscillation coil of the VCO circuit is divided by 4 according to setting
frequency, each of which is further divided by 2 to generate 1Lo. Setting frequency versas VCO output
frequency is tabulated below.

3.3 AF (05P0704)
The AF Board consists of the ALC amplifier circuit for the signal from the handset microphone, and the
AF amplifier circuit (2 channels volume control circuits) for the line input signal from the MF/HF
radiotelephone and beep sound.
INST signal is input to the CONTROL/MODEM board from “J5#3”. The Main CPU recognizes the
presence of the AF board using this signal and enables remote control of the MF/HF radiotelephone.
Which line output signal, of DSC or of handset, is connected to the MF/HF radiotelephone is switched
by the signal “J5#4:SSB”. This signal is switched at DSC transmission or output of audio alarm.

Adjustment of microphone line

1) Turn “R9, OUT LEVEL” fully clockwise, “R7, COMP.” fully counterclockwise, and set
microphone input signal at 1.5kHz. -46dBm, 600 ohms.
2) Adjust “R2, MIC GAIN” for line output level of 3.1Vp-p. (Check point J3#1)
3) Adjust “R9, OUT LEVEL” for line out level of 2.2Vp-p. (Check point J3#1)
4) Set the input at -30dBm and adjust “R7, COMP.” for line out level is of 4.4Vp-p.
When the microphone line is adjusted as shown above, the compressor activates at -40.5dBm
approximately.

resistance rapidly changes when element temperature rises
above a certain value. Change of resistance is as large as 104 100

to 106. The polymer switch is an overcurrent and overheating 10

protection component that restricts current amperage mini-
mum utilizing this characteristic, in which temperature and 1

3.5 SW REG (05P0705)

The SW REG Board is a switching regulator of I/O isolating type, whose input voltage is 24V DC
+30%, -10% and output voltage is +15V, 3A. The oscillation frequency of the switching regulator
depends on capacity of C26 connected to U2, and is set at 200kHz approximately. Over-input voltage is
set by Zener voltage of VR3 and VR4. When power more than the Zener voltage of 35V is input, Q4 is
turned ON, controlling “18V AVR” of Q2, Q3, and the switching regulator stops oscillating.
Further, overcurrent is detected by source resistor R21 to R23 of Q1. Amperage through the 24V input
line is restricted to under 3.1A.
Reverse connection of the power supply is protected by diode CR1, inserted to power input line in series.

3.6 LINE FIL (05P0706)

The LINE FIL Board is a EMC line filter in the line between external equipment connectors and the
CONTROL/MODEM board.

3.7 CONTROL/MODEM (05P0702)

Overview
The CONTROL/MODEM board consists of the main control circuit and modem circuit.
The main control circuit consists of the main CPU (MB91101:FR30), Flash ROM for program,
EEPROM to store communication log and system setting, RAM, and SI/O and PI/O circuits.
The MF/HF radiotelephone, NBDP terminal, and DMC are connected with RS-232C or RS-422, whose
choice can be set with a DIP switch.

The modem unit consists of the CODEC, DSP, Flash ROM circuit for programm and serves to encode
or decode DSC messages.
The MF/HF radiotelephone and modem are communicating by the AFSK signal of 1700Hz +85Hz,
100bps (7 bits/3 bits parity). The modem and main CPU communicate in 8 bits hexadecimal data
through SIO.
Further, signals received from the DSC watch keeping receiver PCB and DSC general watch keeping
receiver PCB (or signal received from the MF/HF radiotelephone) can be decoded at the same time.
Program of DSC and modem is stored in the Flash ROM, and it may be updated with an MS-DOS PC
or IB-581.
A battery to back up memory is not used. To clear the SRAM, turn off the unit and turn it on again.
Data such as system settings and communication log are stored in the EEPROM.

Control between DSC and RT (MF/HF Radiotelephone)

This unit can remotely control the MF/HF radiotelephone. The main CPU on the CONTROL/MODEM
board detects HOOK ON/OFF and PTT ON/OFF signal from the handset, and controls MF/HF radio-
telephone. The control signal between the DSC and the MF/HF radiotelephone is T/R data of MIF or
IEC format, TX KEY, RX MUTE, or STAND-BY signal.
When the ACK RQ (Acknowledge Request) message is received with the AUTO ACK function of the
DSC turned ON, the MF/HF radiotelephone is automatically controlled to send the ACK BQ (Acknowl-
edge Back) signal.

Priority in communication
The DSC distress alarm takes the highest priority, and it is generated in any condition whenever the
[DISTRESS] button is pressed for more than three seconds.
Order of priority of remote control by telephone from the DSC and the MF/HF radiotelephone depends
on the system setting for the MF/HF radiotelephone.

CONTROL/MODEM board: POWER ON

If the POWER ON line of the DSC-60 is connected to FS-75/2550/1562/5000/8000, the radiotelephone
can be turned on and off with the power switch of the DSC-60.That is, the radiotelephone cannot be
turned off when the DSC-60 is on. The advantage of the connection is that a distress alert can be trans-
mitted by the operation only on the DSC-60. This connection has more advantage especially when the
DSC remote control function is used.

Note that the function is limmited according to software and TX/RX board of the in the

MODEM circuit
The DSC reception signal (AFSK signal) is input to the MODEM circuit from the DSC watch keeping
receiver PCB and the DSC general watch keeping receiver PCB (MF/HF radiotelephone if the DSC
general watch keeping receiver PCB is not present).
The signal, having a frequency of 1700Hz +85Hz, 100bps, and 0dBm +10dBm, is input to the
CODEC, U12 through a buffer and a limiter.
The CODEC consists of A/D and D/A converters. In receiving, analog information of the AFSK signal
is converted into digital, and in sending, digital information is converted into analog information of
AFSK signal.
If the DSC signals are input from both ports, the message has higer priority is displayed, and the other
message is printed out and stored in the receive message memory (RX LOG).

The DSC digital signal output from the CODEC starts with dot pattern and sync sequence, and the
message consists of 7 bits data and 3 bits parity. Bit sync, character sync, and error check are performed
in the U13, DSP.
DSC signal in scan receiving is detected in dot pattern, and synchronized in sync sequence. Minimum
signal required for the synchronization is 3 characters of DX and RX. That is, time is required more
than 30 msec. When scanning is stopped, sync can be taken only by sync sequence. Scan time is 270
msec per frequency.

Serial communication is applied between the DSP and main CPU. 7 bit DSC data is converted to 8 bits,
and sent to the main CPU in hexadecimal digit. The CPU decodes this data, displays it on the LCD if it
relates to its own ship, and sounds the alarm.
An edited DSC message is sent to the DSP and CODEC from the main CPU. The CODEC is output by
the signal of 1700Hz +85Hz 100bps, amplifier circuit, and is input to the MF/HF radiotelephone by a
signal of 0dBm as DSC line output.

3. Function and overview of each board

Monitoring function
This function automatically monitors whether the frequency to be used for DSC call or an Acknowledge
transmission is already being used for other communication, and, if used, sends the DSC or Acknowl-
edge after the communication finishes. The monitor detects DSC signals with a modem.
This function works in different ways depending on the category of the transmitting message.

Distress: Not monitored Routine: Monitored

Urgency: Not monitored Business: Monitored
Safety: Not monitored

The DSC general watch keeping receiver, if it is installed, monitors the signal before the DSC call or
DSC ACK BQ transmission. If the receiver is not installed, the MF/HF radiotelephone performs this
function.

1. TONE
This test is used for measuring DSC transmitting power and frequency, F1B (J2B) of MF/HF trans-
ceiver. “MARK” and ”SPACE” tones are used for measuring the frequency, and “DOT” signal is
basically used for measuring the power. Select one of the tones and turn ON/OFF by pressing [ENT]
key. To bring the MF/HF transceiver into transmitting status, turn ON the handset PTT at DSC-60 side
(when REMOTE STATION is set to ON), or turn ON TX KEY in BK test.
Refer to page 6-4 and 6-6.
Pressing [CANCEL] key while keeping this “ON” state returns the screen to “Test function” screen still
keeping the “ON” state. This “ON” state is held until the settings are returned to “OFF” or the power is
turned off.

2. BK
This test checks whether the connected units can be controlled from DSC.
“TX KEY” and “RX MUTE” signals that control MF/HF transceiver and “STANDBY” signal that
controls DB-500 are turned ON/OFF. These signals can be turned ON/OFF independently.
Pressing [CANCEL] key while keeping these “ON” states returns the screen to “Test function” screen
still keeping the “ON” states. These “ON” states are held until the settings are returned to “OFF” or the
power is turned off.

Reference)
In TONE test, if TX KEY is turned ON while outputting “MARK” tone, the MF/HF
transceiver is brought into transmitting status and the radio wave modulated by this tone
signal is emitted enabling the checking of the frequency and transmitting power.

2. Countermeasures against Various Failures

2.5 Low sensitivity of the receivers

1. Press [3/TEST/DEF] key, and execute the daily test. If the test results of RX is “NG”, refer to Page
5-3.
2. Check the jumper wire setting, J3, on RX board.
When connecting FAX-5, an active antenna, DC 12 V must be supplied the preamplifier inside the
antenna unit. Set “J3” at ACTIVE side on both RX boards: DSC watch keeping receiver and general
watching receiver. Refer to Page 4-21.

Reference-1)
There is no problem about the receiver sensitivity if the test result is OK. The level of 18 MHz test
signal is equivalent to SG output of about 0 dBuV.

The following method can be used as a guide for on-site diagnosis of failures. No receiving signal is
required.

1. Measure the LINE OUT levels of RX boards; DSC watch keeping receiver and general
watch keeping receiver in same frequency band, and compare them. If the one is lower than
the other, its RX board or antenna is faulty.

2. Exchange the two antennas each other, and compare the LINE OUT levels in the same way. If
the output level of RX board with the previous lower level does not change. The RX board is
faulty, and if the output level rises, its original antenna is faulty.

Reference-2)
With Antenna disconnected: Level at TP-6 of RX board, noise level is 100 to 200 mVpp.
With Antenna FAX-5+2.6m connected: Level at TP-6 of RX board, noise level is 500 mVpp to

2. Countermeasures against Various Failures

2.6 Faults caused by setup failure

1. The screen does not switch to Radiotelephone Setting Screen and handset can not
be used.
DSC Standby Screen cannot switch to Radiotelephone Setting Screen by pressing [1/RT/2182]
key and the handset of DSC-60 cannot be used., if REMOTE STATION in “System setup” menu is set
at “OFF”. Refer to Page 4-16.

2. The scan frequency of DSC watch keeping receiver is fixed to 2187.5 kHz.
WATCH RCVER in “System setup” menu is set at “MF” for MF DSC. Changing this setting to “MF/
HF” enables the registration of up to 6 scan frequencies. Refer to Page 4-14.

3. The radiotelephone scans DSC receiving frequencies with SCAN ON.

If DSC general watch keeping receiver is not installed, the radiotelephone scans DSC general watch
keeping frequencies. Main CPU of DSC-60 automatically detects installation of the receiver board with
INST signal. The system setting is not needed.

4. AUTO ACK does not work.

AUTO ACK function does not work when AUTO ACK is not set at “ON” with [5/ACK/JKL] and
while the handset of DSC-60 is being used (during OFF HOOK).
AUTO ACK SETUP is included in “Setup menu”; COMPLY TYPE, POSITION CALL, and POLL-
ING CALL. Refer to Page 4-7.

5. Automatic printing does not work.

PRINT SETUP is included in “Setup menu”. XMITD CALL, RCVD CALL, and DAILY TEST CALL
are set at AUTO or MANUAL, respectively. Refer to Page 4-9.

7-12
2. Countermeasures against Various Failures

6. DSC communication can not be performed.

Are the scan frequencies for general watch keeping selected?
The transmitting station specifies DSC transmitting/receiving frequencies; sends ACK RQ message; and
waits for ACK BQ signal from the receiving station. The receiving frequency of the transmitting station
is the transmitting frequency of the receiving station.
The receiving station receives the messages at the transmitting frequency of the transmitting station, and
sends ACK BQ signal at the receiving frequency of the transmitting station. DSC message does not
include DSC communication frequencies.
The ship-to-ship DSC communication is made at same frequency in both transmission and reception,
while the ship-to-shore communication is made with a pair of frequencies assigned to the station.

In the case of DSC-60:

DSC-60 receives ACK RQ signals with the registered scan frequencies and transmits ACK BQ signals
at the frequency paired with the received signal frequency.
Be sure to register the scan frequencies and perform the listening on those frequencies.
At the communication on 2177/2189.5 kHz;
- If ACK RQ is received from a ship (known from MMSI No.), transmit ACKBQ signal at the
same registered frequency as that of the received signal.
- If ACK RQ is received from a coast radio station (known from MMSI No.), transmit ACKBQ
signal at the registered frequency paired with the receiving frequency.

Communication on HF band
When DSC individual call uses paired frequencies such as international parired frequency, Tx frequency in the paired
frequency is used to send ACK RQ, and paired RX frequency is used to receive ACK BQ.

For intership calling, the same frequency is registered onto transmitting and receiving user channels. A message sending
station uses the registered frequency when creating a message. A message receiving station uses the registered frequency
when registering scanning frequencies.

* Group of ships and geographical area calls use only TX frequency in the paired frequency because no
reception is made.
