ABOUT LOWER SPHERE

The function of Lower sphere is to be store the boiled water from economizer
and pass through to furnace bottom ring header by supplier tubes.

It contains internals for filter at inlet nozzle; regulate the flow by orifice at
supply tubes and necessary external attachments.
Print the latest checklist for Lower sphere from the
1
master checklist.
Read the Engineering specification furnished by APW

Checking the Adequacy of Inputs

Check the following details are available in the above
5
inputs

Check
a) OD
b) Thickness
6
Of sphere is same in following
a) ASEM Calculation Sheet.
b) Circulation System Analysis Letter

Always sphere is formed from plate. so the thickness

7 will be mentioned as MWT (Minimum wall thickness)
after forming.
For sphere circumferential weld follow as per the
8
reference contract.

Check
a) OD / ID
b) Thickness
c) Length
d) Location and orientation
9 e) Scarf Details
Of inlet nozzle and supply tubes are same in following
a) ASME Calculation Sheet
b) Circulation System Analysis Letter
c) 3D Model Drawing
d) With Corresponding received drawings

Ensure the nozzle ID and scarf ID should be same in

following
10
a) ASME Calculation Sheet
b) Circulation System Analysis Letter.

For edge preparation details (scarf details) and

11 tolerance please refer ASME calculation sheet, If details
are not available, proceed as per ANSI B16.25 FIG.3C.

For lifting lug orientation and size follow the same as in

12 reference contract. The location has to be modifying as
per our requirement, if sphere size is changed.

Checklist for Furnace Lower Format No.:

Sphere Front and Rear (EF-04F & EF-04R) APIL-NCR-PP-CHKL-005

(For Super Critical Boilers) REV.00

Ensure the lifting lug weld detail is as per the reference

13 contract. (Lifting lug welded, after the weld built up on
the sphere.)
Ensure manhole orientation should be in below 15
14
degree slope respective to horizontal
Ensure manhole and groove dimensions with ASME
15
calculation. Always manhole is DIA. 16” (DIA. 406 mm)
Check the ASME calculation sheet for manhole opening
16
compensation weld built up thickness on the sphere.

Ensure the manhole cover plate thickness as per the

input furnished by APW. If flange plate thickness is not
17
available, proceed with 4” (102 mm) thickness as per
the reference contract.

If this contract having the lower spheres, than manhole

18 should be common drawing for lower sphere and mixing
sphere.

Drain nozzle may be a pipe or standard 2” socket (weld

end connection). Please check with ASME calculation
19
sheet, if details are not available, proceed with 1.5”
Standard socket.

Check the P & I’D for number of pressure tapping and

20 ensure that is given in the drawing, location should be
as per the reference drawing.
If input is not available for strainer, proceed as per the
21
point no.6.
Pressure, Temperature and material specification
22
details can be referred from ASME calculation sheet.

Strainer
The function of strainer is to remove the impurities particles from water.
Strainer height is based on the inlet nozzle I.D and
23
quantity of holes on the strainer.
Strainer is fabricated into two half piece for easy
24
cleaning and connected by marman coupling.
Reducer supports the strainer and reducer welded with
25
sphere inside in line of inlet nozzle.
Strainer formed by 0.25” (6 mm) thickness plate and its
26
shape is circular.
Strainer height is restricted up to the top row of the
27
supply tubes. Please refer reference contract.
Strainer diameter based on the no. Off holes are
28 accommodated in single row (circumferential). But
strainer diameter should be less than inlet nozzle I.D

(For Super Critical Boilers) REV.00

Provided the holes on the reducer as per the reference

29 contract. If holes are not able accommodated within the
strainer and bottom end plate

30 Strainer having DIA. 0.375” (DIA. 10 mm) holes.

No. off holes on the strainer must be 1.5 times of inlet
31
nozzle area.
32 Longitudinal pitch holes should be 0.4375” (11 mm)

33 Circumferential pitch holes should be 0.50” (12.5 mm)

Ensure the gap between the first row holes to strainer

34 and last row holes to strainer of both the segments as
per reference contract.
Ensure the pitch of holes on bottom end plate as per the
35
reference contract.
Ensure weld connections between strainer to coupling
36
and strainer to end plate as per the reference contract.
Ensure location of bottom end plate as per the
37
reference contract.
Ensure stagger pitch holes on strainer / bottom end
38
plate / reducer.
Ensure gap .75” (20 mm) between the coupling to first
39
row holes (circumferential)

Supply Tubes
Ensure mark nos. of supply tubes as per corresponding
40
drawings.
Ensure the location and orientation of supply tubes with
41
corresponding drawings.
For nozzle and supply tubes to sphere welding details
42
as per the reference drawings.
Ensure each supply tubes having orifice adapter and
43 orifice plate with marman coupling are welded inside the
sphere. Please refer reference drawings.

Ensure the orifice adapters and orifice plate STD. PART
