How Indonesian
Youth Could Deal
with International
Relations

O
n the subject of ideology, I believe
Indonesia remains as one of the
countries with judicially conducive
and established democracy. Indonesia
is also one of the important and
leading democratic countries in South East
Asia. Historically, Indonesia can be considered
as the most revolutionized countries in terms
of its political ideology. In attempt to reach
the real democracy, (in which the transfers,
discoveries, and expression of ideas, opinions,
and thoughts are justifiable and liberated)
Indonesia has passed several momentous
political reformations. One of the significant
revolutions was in 1998 which is often called
as “era of reformation”. At this point, the iron-

handed regime of Soeharto was tumbled
down by people of Indonesia, led by the
student movement. During the regime, the
actualization of democracy had been impeded
as the access and opportunities in expressing
ideas and opinions (especially regarding the
governmental works) had often been restricted
and oppressed by the central government. In
respond to the democratization as the part of
globalization, many Indonesians at that time
found this restriction as dictatorial governance.
Therefore, by May 1998, the reformation took
place where Soeharto gave up his position
as President and by that time, our political
ideology revolutionized in accordance with
the next presidents’ governance, which is to

say, the real national-wide democracy where
people are now living in era of information
literacy freedom, participation in every national
political policies, and open-mindedness.
On the subject of International Relations,
Indonesian foreign policies remain as
independent and active. The policy is
independent because Indonesia does not
take any sides of world powers, which
means being neutral and objective in facing
international issues. The foreign policy is
active to the extent that Indonesia does
not sustain a passive or reactive stand on
international issues, but inquires about active
participation in their resolution. In other words,
Indonesia’s independent and active policy is
not a neutral policy, but it is one that does not
align Indonesia with the super powers nor
does it bind the country to any military pact.
Essentially, it is a policy designed to serve the
national interest while simultaneously allowing
Indonesia to cooperate with other nations to
eradicate colonialism and imperialism in all
their forms and manifestations for the sake of
world peace and social justice (Embassy of The
Republic of Indonesia, Washington, D.C.). If we
see through this point of view, it indicates that
Indonesia has managed to be “laissez-faire”
or flexible yet defensive in positing itself in
international arena. Nevertheless, actualizing
it is hardly easy. As the ‘newbie’ in establishing
the real democracy, facing the trans-cultural
and multidimensional effects of globalization
and free trade, Indonesia seems to have
several difficulties to survive its political, social,
and economical stabilities, both at national
and international levels. Furthermore, in the
highlight of multiculturalism, establishing
a strong tolerance and solidarity within our
society is a vital thing to create a just and
civilized humanity in order to reach a stabile
national security. Unfortunately, until this
moment, Indonesia still needs to struggle
more to reach this point regarding so many
hindrances. Indonesia is now facing a dilemma
in actualizing a social integration. There are still
some cultural, religious, and ethnic conflicts
happen in several parts of Indonesia. Not only
that, ethnocentrism, stereotypes, prescriptive
thoughts, and prejudices regarding people
from different background and ethnicity exist
in almost entire society. This kind of situation,
hamper us in reaching a good and beneficial
future of the country. If the people themselves
are not united and solid in one mission and
vision, keeping their own interests, and hurting
each other, then how can we create a good
future together? If most of the people inside
the country can not even manage to respect
each others’ differences, then how can we
manage to be able to face cultural differences
at international level?
In respond to the problems mentioned
above, on the subject of youth, I believe it is the
most potential source for us to tackle problems
in Indonesia. The prospect and competence of
our young generation is the sole determinant
of predicting our future success. Young
generation is our human capital. Therefore, in
producing and rearing young generation, lay
the essential groundwork for the formation
of human knowledge, skills, creativity, and
innovation. That is to say, productive and
knowledgeable young generation is the
key ingredient in the recipe for success
and prosperity in the post-industrial and
globalization age, both at national and
international levels. In this case, what exactly
has the most to do with producing convenient
young generation nowadays and in the future
is education. Thus, establishing convenient and
prevalent educational policies are crucial.
Conclusively, in achieving political, social,
and economic stabilities both at national and
international levels, young generation is really
important as they are “sprouts” of our human
capital. Therefore, Indonesia needs take more
credits in managing and improving its youth’s
qualities, which in this case, education is the
significant instrument for actualizing it.

Moving Toward to Better
Education in Indonesia with
MDGs
Millennium Development Goals are eight international goals that have been agreed by
192 countries, members of United Nation (including Indonesia). The aim of MDGs is to
encourage development by improving social and economic conditions. All of the goals are

o far, what Indonesia has achieved
according to MDGs? Which goal
that has been achieved better than
other goals? Referred to UNICEF-
Indonesia’s website, Indonesia
seems more successful in achieving 2nd
goal of MDGs which is “by 2015, all children
can complete a full course of primary
education, girls and boys”. According to
that fact, I will emphasize my writing on
Indonesia’s achievement in 2nd goal of
MDGs.

Decades ago, most of Indonesians
thought that education was not playing
important role in human’s life. They
thought that education just wasted their
money and they couldn’t earn money
for their daily needs with it. At that time,
people did not consider education as a
long-term investment. They also did not
think that literacy played tremendous
role in human’s entire life. During those
dark decades, many parents chose to let
their under-aged children working in rice
fields instead of going to school. People
also married in very young age (compared
with today’s situation). Instead of getting
primary education, a 13 years old girl might
have been proposed as soon as she got her
first menstruation. She then got married
with a boy whose age was not much older
than her. This teenage married-couple
did not have a chance to get primary
education. They, as well as their parents,
did not even realize that getting primary
education was a right that’s supposed to
be fulfilled especially for young people. We
couldn’t blame on them or their parents
who gave such permission; the situation
made this thing happened. It was caused
by a wrong paradigm that lived in society.
What Indonesia has achieved according
to the 2nd goal of MDGs is a remarkable
achievement. The old paradigm has
changed with the new one which considers
education as an important need, as
well as shelter, food and clothes. Most
parents who come from different layers of
economic have agreed that education is a
channel to do social mobilization and to
get better social stand. The rate of literacy
is increasing due to public’s awareness in
education especially the primary ones.
Statistic shows, rate of children in Indonesia
who attend elementary school (SD) is 94.7
percent and the percentage of kids who
attend junior high school (SMP) increases
every year. Maybe this achievement is an
effect of government policy that has made
nine years education (during SD and SMP)
become compulsory for both boys and
girls.
Despite those high achievements,
government still has some undone tasks
according to 2nd goal of MDGs. As written
in constitution, government must allocate
20% (per year) of total government’s
expenditure (in APBN) for education. In fact
the 20% of total government’s expenditure
in APBN is not fully organized and not used
by ministry of education to make primary

education become more accessible,
especially for those who live in remote
region. Even the 20% expenditure is used
by another institution/ministry for civil
servants training. Many people still doubt
Indonesia’s achievement in providing
accessible primary education for all citizens,
though the statistic almost reaches 100%
citizen’s participation in primary education.
Besides, we can still find different quality
of education; the government has to fix
it. Government must ensure that every
child in Indonesia gets education equally;
there must be standardization in recruiting
teacher, especially teacher for primary
schools because we know primary school
plays important role in shaping one’s
personality so that government should
give higher wages for qualified-teachers
who teach in remote regions.
Five years to go to 2015, the year when
all the targets of MDGs are expected to
achieve. The government should not only
consider the achievements according to
MDGs quantitatively but also qualitatively.
The matter is not only about “how much
children have attended the primary
education?’’ but also “how good is the
primary education in Indonesia?” By the
year of 2015, I hope all of us can live in
better Indonesia where everyone gets what
they are supposed to get, such as good
education.

The Benefits of Indonesia’s
Participation in CAFTA
Globalization is growing around the world. The rapid development of technology and information
transfer surpasses national boundaries and increases international interactions. It allows nations to enhance
cooperation among each another, creating new opportunities and possibilities. One of the actual form of
globalization is the creation of free trade areas.

ree Trade Areas are agreements among nations
that decrease or diminish trading boundaries
and protections to enhance economic activities
among member countries. It is part of the effort
to create equal opportunities of development
through easier access for investments and trading.
Indonesia as a member of international community
also takes part in free trade area agreements. The most
recent is the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA).
This cooperation between China and ASEAN member
states reduces taxes for goods traded between the
participants and provides easier access for investors
to invest capitals in both regions. relationship with China shall benefit Indonesia in both

participating in CAFTA.
First, CAFTA provides new potential market for

This huge amount of population benefits producers
due to high consumption. The CAFTA reduces tax and
other barriers that prevent Indonesian goods from
entering the Chinese market as well. Therefore, it
creates wider possibilities for Indonesian producers to
market their goods in China and gain more profit from
the new market. It leads to the growth of Indonesian
national industry which increases national economic
development and provides
higher job opportunities.
The CAFTA also provides
easier access for investors
from both countries to
invest on either region. This
will increase the number of
investments in Indonesia.
The biggest problem in
Indonesian economy is the
lack of capital. A significant
increase in the amount of

to create new industries that

opportunities and enhancement in current industries
which shall improve the national economic. Foreign
investments in Indonesia also enhance transfer in
technology and experts. This shall decrease the
Indonesian technology and capability gap, therefore
improves quality and efficiency in production.
The third benefit from Indonesia’s participation
in CAFTA is the improvement and enhancement of
international relationship with China. An agreement
in free trade area shall increase interactions between
both regions and create more intense relations. China
is a growing international power; therefore good
present and the future. An agreement in free trade
areas may also open possibilities for cooperation in
other sectors and areas.
The agreement between China and ASEAN
member states, including Indonesia, to ratify free trade
area cooperation between both regions show that
globalization is actuating in areas of life. It benefits
Indonesian through easier access towards existing
market and higher possibilities for investment also
creates a better relationship with China. Therefore,
CAFTA serves as a policy that provides great potential
for economic development which is essential in
developing countries like Indonesia. This agreement
also acts as a stepping stone for Indonesia’s further
participation in creating free trade areas with other
countries, in other regions.

trade and globalizations in Indonesia is like
talking about a double-edged sword: get it
right and we’ll have an economic burst in no
time, but get it wrong and we’ll ‘die’ without
a chance to resurrect even just for once. Why?

Motivating
Indonesian
Youth for
the Future
IIW can be one of the medium to learn other country’s culture

N
owadays, the phenomenon of
Indonesian youth in promiscuity is
increasing year by year. Based on
Badan Koordinasi Keluarga Berencana
Nasional (BKKBN)’s survey data, about
200.000 female teenagers in West Java have
done abortion per year. Moreover, Pusat Keluarga
Berencana Indonesia (PKBI) stated, Indonesia has
reached 2.3 million abortion cases every year and
30% is contributed by teenagers. We can see one
of the causes from the fact that Western culture
has influenced Indonesians especially youth’s life
style such as free sex before marriage, abortion,
wild parties, hedonism, and else. The weakness
of norms and values in Indonesian people
(youth generation for example) has made them
no longer hold Eastern life style; they become a
generation with no clues about what to do and
not to do also who just live by the flow. Many
youth think that being young is time for having
fun and do anything as free as they can because
they think life begins in 30 something, not now.
On the other hand, some youth may have
different beliefs with “Western Era- generation”
as I have mentioned above. They realize that life
only happens once and youth should maximize
their lives by doing anything with good
purposes, even to make changes for others’
life. Still, they have not got the adjust area or
medium to share ideas together, to discuss also
to give solutions about youth’s phenomenon,
and to bring changes to the world, especially
by youth movement. If there is any medium to
guide and to make youth movement, I am pretty
sure that youth can change their point of view
about living. Even they can bring changes to this
country and the world. This shows that youth are
not a problem; indeed they are solution.

The key is to involve as many youth as we
can. Government and the upper circle like
enterpreneurs, social workers, even educators
like teachers and school principles should
involve and motivate youth generation, not
underestimate them. For example, DPR’s
Commission for Youth should not only make
law or regulations for youth; they should also
make a big event whereas many youth can
involve in it nationally. They can have “I love
Indonesia” as the theme. Such event can show
Indonesia’s uniqueness and potential that might
have not been known or realized by Indonesian
youth. Maybe they previously only knew Batik
as Indonesian famous culture and Bali as the
greatest island in Indonesia. In fact, Indonesia
have a great natural resources and beautiful
islands as well, like Rajaampat in Papua (which
is legally owned by Indonesia, but used and
cultivated by the Dutch and the Australian.
Youth is the future of this country and the
world. If youth generation stand up together, I
believe they can make changes. I am certainly
sure that ISAFIS is the perfect medium for youth
movement. They can share ideas together with
other youth from foreign countries, exchange
different point of views with different cultures
around the world, and adjust the work style by
workforce diversity so that they can learn from
the best. They also can learn another country’s
culture by having cross-cultural exchange such
as learning traditional music instruments and
local dances between countries. Indonesian
youth then would realize indirectly that their
country is actually a great country. Thus, by
standing up together with other youth around
the world, they can make changes!

Indonesia is a densely populated country and
comprises with 17.508 islands. Within this
archipelago, Indonesia reserves many heritages;

the qualities of youth: not a time of life but a
state of mind, a temper of the will, a quality of
imagination, a predominance of courage over
timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the
life of ease.” I definitely agree with this perception.
As it has been widely known secret, this world is
always advancing towards globalization. Therefore,
in order to comply with globalization, people (youth
for foremost) need to be aware with how to deal
with humans worldwide. Youth need to learn that
in this global world, there are abilities that they
need to master such as communication skill to the
international community.
This communication skill could open up relations
from all over the world. We should admit and agree
that nowadays people who master more than one
language would be easier to find jobs or to interact
with people from other countries. English is a very
important language to master but without good
communication skill, most of the knowledge will be
meaningless.
Youth in Indonesia sure have great desires,
dreams, and spirit to create better Indonesia. By
an organization like ISAFIS, youth can strengthen
and develop their communication skill. I really
believe that young generation is the relevant actor
for development because they have significant
contribution to their family, community, and society.
Discussion and information share about any kind of
issues with the government and Non-Governmental
Organizations will encourage and inspire the youth in
giving solutions due to their need of medium for skill
development. I also believe that youth in Indonesia

can be ‘the people’ who take real action to continue
and to maintain their country with their ideas, dreams,
spirits and passions. I believe that if youth can take
action, nothing is impossible.
Indonesian youth should have a wide perspective.
They must base their knowledge on the full
consciousness that Indonesia is part of history and
global society dynamism. We have to maintain good
relations with our neighboring countries. Some
issues in other countries, to some extent, need our
consideration. We should be active in participating
in the international arena since we cannot simply live
alone.
Young people must also possess a multidimensional
perspective. Perspective is good for the youth in order
to understand that they cannot only think of their
own interests in absolute terms. Win-win solutions
are necessary to solve common problems. Some
aspects, like universal soul and multidimensional
consciousness, are indeed important for young
leaders in the future. By having such consciousness,
they will be able to create a “more humane” society.
Thus, to build good international relations, I
believe three things are needed: belief, goodwill, and
idealism. Belief is the result of incessant dialogue and
mutual understanding. Also, along with the presence
of goodwill, cooperation and understanding among
countries are possible. The role of the young, with
their universal soul and multidimensional perspective,
is a necessary prerequisite. After all, young people do
have aspirations to be leaders in the future.

Lee Kuan Yew
His effort to build and to develop Singapore to be like now is something incredible. At the
beginning of this city-state, no one believed Singapore could progress into a giant economic
and modern country. But now we can see how Lee Kuan Yew has turned those predictions
to be proved wrong.

I
n his interview with Fareed Zakaria, he said he did
not want to follow any prescriptions given by any
theorists and forces. He only wanted to implement
his own prescription that based on Singaporean
everyday live.
So what prescription did he mean?
The most questioned question regarding to his
stances toward Singaporean lives is whether democracy
is applicable or not in Singapore. He was so famous for
his critics upon the spread of America’s democracy by
American government. When Fareed Zakaria asked this
to him, he only said that America’s democracy is just
undoable.
Singapore under Lee Kuan Yew has grown so fast in
its economy, trade, and financial life, but not with its
democracy. People were banned to gather without police
permission. The political climate has been unfriendly to
the opposition. All of these have resulted an enormous
stability on its political life and not forget to mention Lee
Kuan Yew’s People Action Party’s life. For his opponent,
his leadership has been the most criticized.
To respond these critics, he described what he
called his prescription. He simply said that economic
development was more important than democracy.
“First let’s get a decent livelihood, then we can talk
about superior form of government and democracy is
the superior form of government,” he added.
Lee Kuan Yew later on explained about his intention
in building Singapore. First world oasis in the third world
country is what he had dreamed about to achieve what’s
now Singaporean has enjoyed. Now Singaporean can
enjoy all results which Lee Kuan Yew has strived for. A huge
amount of GDP, high level of economic development, a
good system of education, a clean government, and last
but not least, the modern city of Singapore.

All of these were achieved
under his leadership, despite
the critics that often describe
him as an authoritarian leader
who doesn’t respect democracy.
This figure has reminded me to
Fareed Zakaria’s thesis. He said,
“An authoritarian leader whose
respect individual freedom is
much better than a democratic
government who doesn’t
respect individual freedom.”
At last, maybe the right
word to end this opinion
article is that Lee Kuan Yew has
proven how succeed he was
in building Singapore with his
own prescription that based
on Singaporean lives. What
Mahathir Muhammad ever said,
“A great leader is like a doctor,
always listen to their people
rather than do thing with their
own way”.
OBAMA’s SPEECH
ISAFIS got a chance to see Mr. Obama last November.
Some of ISAFISians have their own judgment about his speech.
“I wonder no significance impact would
be brought by Obama’s coming except a
feeling for Indonesian that they are still
being remembered. The time he spent in
Indonesia for his visit which was less than
24 hours indicates that in fact, Indonesia
was not that important for United States
of America, but maybe important for
Obama. I attempt to exclude Obama
from USA because at the beginning of
his speech, I felt like he speech as an
“Indonesian” who just came back to his
hometown. However, in the middle of
his speech he came back to his nature
as a representative of USA. It was like
he opened his mask and talked as an

American especially when he talked
about economy. He said implicitly that
the amount of Indonesian people could
be a potential market for American
goods. He strongly urged a good tie in
economics cooperation, though overall
his speech was about Islam and USA.
This indicates how important Indonesia
as their market. From this reality I try to
be realistic, seeing that actually we don’t

Let me start by saying that Indonesia
is a home of spices and exquisite cuisines.
Their dishes are undoubtedly rich with
chilis. Thriving there for a month is like
living in a chamber of deprivation since I
was not able to lavish exotic dishes for I am
not used to eating such. Equally shocking
too when I found out that even with their
supposedly sweet concoctions are filled
with spices. Confronted with this reality,
still it wasn’t that successful in altering my
taste bud. However, there is a viand that I
treasured for all my life that is “Nasi Goreng
Teri”. It is the best Indonesian food I have
ever tasted. Its taste washed my tiredness
and homesickness away. I don’t mind
eating it for a month or so. Aside from the
scorching meals, it is also renowned for
its magnificent batik designs. My eyes are
glued at the vibrant patterns that it exuded.
I can’t help not to stare and be bewitched
by the beauty it possessed. If it is a celebrity
I’ve bet it must be the talk of the town. It is
a must-buy for a shopaholic like me. Well, I
could only care less with its price because
in Indonesia I am a millionaire. It felt good
having a million rupiahs and more (hehe).
However, the currency gave me a huge
headache when buying some stuff. Dealing
with many zeros is my waterloo.

There would be a number
of fascinating and bizarre
cultures Indonesia has. The
puppetry show, numbers
of unique grooves, peculiar
mode of transportation,
and TRAFFIC (laughs) made
Indonesia a must-visit and
must-seen country. As
much as I wanted to tell
my wonderful odyssey in
detail I think I can’t. There
are so many things to be
told. This is just means
that it is indeed a melting
pot of disparate rhythms
and cultures. It cannot be
denied that it did undergo
to a series of intermarriages
with other traditions. It had
embraced multiracialism with open arms.
In retrospection, it is not only the culture
that I have discovered. As time passed by, I
have the chance to acquire a tremendous
knowledge to existing predicaments
of Indonesia. Well, special thanks to my
friend Febi for introducing (Indonesian
Students Association For International
Studies ISAFIS. A brief yet a mind-blowing
discussion. I felt I had a crash-course on
politics and history. It made me realized
that Indonesia and Philippines the same
predicament. Being third world countries
they are number of similarities. Let me
share a few things that I have unveiled.
Poverty and Corruption
Corruption is the most common
denominator between Indonesia and
Philippines. With corruption in the line
it had mired the two countries in deep
poverty which obstructs their way to
progress. That is why it would no longer
be a surprise that these countries are
included in the list of most corrupt. These
dilemmas have been visible immemorial
but until now there is no effective antidote
to put this contagious disease to an end.
Umpteenth organizations have tried to
spearhead several discussions about
ending corruption but still it had remained
weak. If we will take a look in our milieu
there are numbers of intensive nationwide
campaigns to combat this predicament
but none of it succeeded. This might be
because we have ruled out a very salient
equation of the formula. We have never
realized that we have embraced and
condoned the culture of bribery for the
longest time. A typical scenario would be
cheating in exam or copying someone’s
homework. Have you ever heard of
someone being imprisoned because he
or she was caught cheating? Well, I bet
none. They might be punished but not
to the extent of being shut behind bars.
This is a sign that we have not yet taken
“corruption” seriously. We always frown if
we found out that elected officials stole
our taxes. We raise our eyebrow if a person
whose ability is lower than us got a higher
position in the work place because he or
she is a close friend to our boss. But have
we honestly asked ourselves whether
along the way we try to cheat be it small
or not? Or be an accessory of cheating? I
would admit I am guilty of such act. Even
I can see my friends cheating on exam I
won’t have that courage to tell the teachers
because I am afraid of the consequences
that it might bring. Sometimes this awful
reality circulates in our lives but we find it
“normal” since everaybody is doing it. This
indicates that we in the strictest description
can label ourselves as corrupt. But little we
did know that if we have prevented this
misdemeanor before it gets worse then
we might tag as one. If we had nurtured
potential leaders in the right manner then
we haven’t been where we are now. We
are now reaping what we have sown for
decades.
Catalyst of Change
The question would be how to fight
corruption? In a world where impartiality
will never exist how can justice be served?
The answer lies in us. The youth (with
our ardor, enthusiasm, and wisdom)
are still believed to be the hope for the
future. What we seem to lack now is the
proper motivation and driving force to
trust that they can make an impact in
society and influence decision-making.

We could be in our own little way to be an
instrument of change. We can instigate a
change in the system by starting within
ourselves. I am not saying that we need
to go out and demonstrate or scrutinize.
I am not also asking that we need be
like Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela,
or Dalai Lama. What I will just ask for us
to do is to stop cheating. Stop cheating
with our classmates. Stop tolerating other
misdeeds. Stop talking and start acting. We
can be a catalyst of change if we will take
the initiative to lead our nation to a free-
cheat country. We can shape our vicinity
in the best way we can ever imagine. We
can define who we will be in the next
generation. So please let’s begin now.

COP16: Highlights and Conclusions
from a Mexican Negotiations Tracker
COP16 is over and we did not leave with our empty hands!

For several days I have been reading some
news that state or have stated that COP16 was a
failure. Others take a bit more positive attitudes.
Personally, I think that Cancun was a key to
revive the negotiating process to combat climate
change, which means progress. Definitely: a
long and tiring process. It was my first COP and
I must say I learned a lot during the last two
weeks, perhaps much more than what I could
have learned immersed in books and news of
the summit. I want to share some points that I
consider key to understanding a little more of the
final conclusions from the climate summit:
• The creation of dialogue and networking
between government, NGOs, researchers,
journalists and observers was invaluable. All these
different perspectives enriched the process, all
voices were heard and I think mostly directed
towards the path of right action.
• No international agreement was reached
to replace the Kyoto protocol in this 2012, when it
ceases to be valid, but negotiators returned to run
the process and the negotiations were positive.

The text pressented by the end of the conference
mentioned the creation of a green fund to help
developing countries cope with the heat and put
in place a mechanism to combat deforestation.
• Important messages to civil society:
the importance of acting locally, without waiting
for the delegates of each country to agree on a
document. Act Locally, Think Globally.
• Personally, to follow the steps to the
delegation of Mexico made me realize the
important role that took the country at this COP,
and the commitment it has made to combat
climate change. Moreover, its leadership hailed
by almost every nation, earned them the prize
“silver lining” for the transparency provided in the
Cancun negotiations.
I really hope what Mexican negotiators stated
will become a reality, and I’ll be tracking down
these negotiators and key players, who have
shown exceptional work during the past two
weeks. Because it is now, after the talks when real
work comes!

Going back some days ago and remembering
my personal highlights, I would like to talk about
two people that I had the opportunity to talk
to and who changed my perspective on the
International fight against Climate Change.
First of all, as a part of the “Adopt A Negotiator”
tracking team, we had the chance to meet the
secretary of the UN Framework Convention
on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Mrs Christiana
Figueres.
I must admit that she is a very nice, down to
Earth woman. Born in Costa Rica, Figueres feels
passionate about her homeland being affected by
climate change.
There was a special moment on the chat we
had where I asked her what was her motivation
in combating climate change. Her answer left me
speechless, as with tears in her eyes she said that

the main inspiration was “us, young people”.
She explained that she felt guilty for the planet
her generation is leaving to new ones, as every
day we have more species on extinction and
people are dying because of human actions on
the planet.
Another great moment that will remain in
my mind was when I could ask a question in the
plenary directly to Mexican President: Felipe
Calderon.
I was nervous at the very beginning, when he
chose me to talk and ask a question in front of the
negotiators and ministers inside the place. But
then, when I started speaking, everything seemed
to make sense.
I asked the perspective of the president on
youth as activists and communicators, observers
or leaders on fighting climate change at the
conference. I asked if our voices had been heard.
Being able to raise my voice, and represent
youth voices that had been working with or
around me was very significative for me. I received
some applauses after giving my question, and
finally, the president mentioned the importance of
having youth as an inspiration for negotiators, and
as a way on supporting and helping the process.
COP16 was a great experience but I will keep on
following the process after Cancun. If you would like

which presents real stories behind World War II:
military cooks. Here, the army cooks had very
important role in a fight strategy. Military cooks
became the ‘key’ of armies’ energy and mood
during the battle. In short, they could influence
history through their spoons.
This film tells that cooking and fighting have a
lot in common: strategizing, judging the correct
proportion of ingredients (there were thousands
armies that had to be served during the war),
and flavoring. You’ll see here food preparing
becomes a metaphor for the battle.
The film is based on eleven recipes of the cooks
(even the poisoned ones) since the second war
until the war in Tchechenia; from france through
the Balkans to Russia.
This way of story telling makes Cooking History
an interesting way to learn history.
Note: in the movie you’ll watch animals getting
slaughtered in various ways for their (the cook)
meat. These are deeply disturbing scenes for
certain people, especially kids and vegetarians.

International Model United Nations
2010
On 3-7 February 2010, Ari went to
Dubai, United Emirates Arab for
EMIMUN. Ari represented Thailand in
International Monetary Fund committee.
Just like other MUN process, Ari was
involved in the whole MUN activities,
from committees in session, working
paper, to draft resolution. This MUN and
its main theme, Sovereign Wealth Fund
have inspired Ari to hold ISAFIS Model
United Nations (IMATION) in April 2010.
IMATION shows his great motivation
to share his knowledge about MUN
know-how with ther ISAFISIans. Thus,
ISAFISians could be more prepared and
ready whenever they had to compete in
MUN events.

SUMMIT 2010
With substantive and financial supports
from several ministries in Indonesia,
Olivia and Riza finally could reach
Toronto, Canada. They were expected
to be involved in G-8 and G-20 meeting
with other youth from those groups of
countries. MY SUMMIT purpose itself
was to involve the youth as
world’s future leaders in the
top of world’s economical
meetings. The selection of
these representatives was
really strict. There were
only seven youth selected
as Indonesia Delegates by
the organizer, Global Vision.
However, the selection
made it precious because
the delegates got a chance
to discuss high politic issues

his cabinet.
Febi Purnamasari, 5th World Youth
Congress 2010
It is the first congress she has attended
and Turkey is the first foreign country
she’s ever been to. After the whole
selection process, Febi was honored to
represent Indonesia in this congress.
There, she took a role as a Young
Journalist and a facilitator for a
workshop titled “Enlighten Your Society
with Your Good Journalism Skills”. She
also posted some articles and photos
on The Congress Times which were read
by more than 1000 participants around
the world. Besides, being involved in
the Action Projects was one of Febi’s
activities as well. She spent three days
at Eskisehir to help the local people
developing the area, such as planting the
trees at the local park and helping the
people at the construction area.

Model United Nations (AMUNC) 2010
Evrin represented as an honorable
delegate from New Zealand in UNDP
committee. At AMUNC 2010, the

second UNDP were given two topics.
The first topic was “The question of
building digital bridges: information
and communication technology for
development” and the second topic was
“The question of the responsibilities
of multinational corporations acting in
developing countries”. As the honorable
delegate for New Zealand, she devised
two working papers and several
amendments for the topics. Despite the
debate, caucus, working paper, and draft
resolution, all delegates and directors
socially mingled in every single session,
both at committee session and social
events. Therefore, Evrin said, “AMUNC
2010, especially UNDP committee,
satisfied me to the max in every possible
way!”
Lusia Novita Sari, BrizMUN 2010
It was held on April 9-11 at the
Queensland University of Technology.
The theme for BrizMUN 2010 was “Unite
the Present, Challenge the Future”.
Lusia was the only delegate who was

from Indonesia, even the only one from
South East Asia. Most of the delegates
were from Australia and New Zealand
and had already participated in the
former BrizMUN. Lusia represented
Netherlands at the first General
Assembly. The topic they discussed in
BrizMUN was “Questioning the Threat

Attacks”. She’s learned a lot from the
MUN and enjoyed it really well! Last but

On March 2010, Sri joined World Model
of United Nations in Taipei, Taiwan.
For Sri, WorldMUN is by far the most
geographically diverse, most exciting,
and the most rewarding conference.
That was her first MUN ever. Sri thought
it was a really nerves-crack and that time
MUN was not popular for Indonesians.
Sri could through it well, though. That
time, Sri represented Barbados.
Moreover, at the end of the
winter season of this year, Sri
also joined Asian International
Model of United Nations
in Beijing. Sri said that the
conference was a nice one
where the delegates come
from many countries in Asia,
Russia, and some European
countries.

serious activities like discussing AD/ART

board at the next morning. The election

Essays were announced
later that week, followed
by the Interview Session.
Second Round Selection
The two days interview
sessions were held in
ISAFIS Office which
located at Banyumas 2,
Menteng. We put high
expectations on our top
50 interviewees, let’s show
us some personalities! The
interview went smoothly,
and the interviewee
surprised us with the
way they construct their
arguments as well as
presenting their abilities.
MOKA
The journey was almost
reaching its end! After
the Top 25 had been
announced the upcoming
event to follow was our
Newbies’ Orientation
called MOKA. Located
at Bekasi Town House’s
villas number 346 and
345, all the people were
all set to rock MOKA! The
first segment to hold was
“Trivia Games” which
required the newbies’
knowledge to beat up

the questions. The next to
come was ‘Amazing Race
ISAFIS’! This race had 4 pit
stops in which every stops
required all the newbies
to do various task. The
tasks were designed to
show newbies’ assertive
public speaking skill
and confidence. At the
end of the race, group 2
(consisting Garlan, Tasya,
Melia, Arya and Ringgo)
was chosen to be the
best group based on
their excellent teamwork!
We also had our best
newbies, please say hello
to Garlan (Best Male
Newbie) and Maya (Best
Female Newbie). Later
that night, all the newbies
were certified with ISAFIS’s
membership placard
plus ISAFIS official ID
Cards and finally, they are
legally accepted as ISAFIS
members!
So once again,
congratulation to our
no-longer newbies. It’s so
nice to have you all as our
newest families!
