Let´s work with first impressions
I Read the text carefully and answer True - False to the following statements.
Even fact will not change first impressions
First impressions are so powerful that they can override what we are told about
people. A new study found that even when told whether a person was gay or
straight, participants generally identified the person´s sexual orientation based on
how they looked – even if it contradicted the facts presented to them. “ We judge
books by their covers”.
As soon as one sees another person, an impression is formed. This happens so
quickly, just a small fraction of a second. That what we can see, sometimes
dominate what we know.
For example Ricky Martin who for years denied he was gay before finally he
came out of the closet. In the 1990’s people might see Martin and think “ oh that´s
a gay man” ,but then he recognized that it is Ricky Martin and he had told in a TV
program that he was straight.
These studies illustrate how we form impressions of other people based on their
appearance.

questions.
Two teenage boys were recently imprisoned for life for murdering a woman
because she was dressed as a Goth. The woman, twenty, and her twenty -one-
year- old boyfriend (both of whom were wearing black clothes and had
piercings) were walking home through a park when they met a group of
teenagers. At first, there was a good- natured and friendly atmosphere between
the young people, but this conversation quickly became cruel asthe group of five
youths attacked the twenty-one-year old man. He was suddenly knocked to the
ground and kicked about until he was unconscious. As the girl friend tried to
stop the attack, holding his head on her lap and calling for help, some of the
gang began kicking her. She was left lying by her boyfriend´s side, unconscious.
Police took them to the nearest hospital and the woman was in comma for two
weeks before she died. The boyfriend has been out of his comma for a while
now and he claims he finds the world a “terrifying place” to live in.
The judge, who sentenced the attackers, said that their behavior seemed to be
based only on the way the pair were dressed.
a) They were 21 b) She was 20 & he was 21 c) She was 21 & he was 20
