What are the significant contributions of the Colonizers (Spaniards, Americans and Japanese) in
the development of science and technology in the Philippines?

The colonization of the Philippines contributed to growth of science and


technology in the archipelago. The Spanish introduced formal education and founded
scientific institution. During the early years of Spanish rule in the Philippines. Science
during the American period was inclined towards agriculture, food processing,
medicine and pharmacy. Not much focus was given on the development of industrial
technology due to free trade policy with the United States which nurtured an
economy geared towards agriculture and trade. As time passed by, the Philippines
nowadays has a lot of advance technologies involved around us. The contributions of
the colonizers give and influenced us more in advance and most importantly because
of this foreign countries Philippines has evolved because of the new technology.

2. what can you say about about the status of science and technology during the pre-colonizers
era? List down at least 15 Filipino scientists and their contributions to Science and technology in
our country and to the whole world.

Filipinos were already aware of the medicinal and therapeutic properties of plants and the
methods of extracting medicine from herbs. They already had an alphabet, number system, a
weighing and measuring system and a calendar. Filipinos were already engaged in farming,
shipbuilding, mining and weaving. From this all, Filipinos much aware and more educated and
advance in trading. There are also Filipino scientist who contributes to science and technology
in our country and the whole world.
1. ANGEL C. ALCALA
Alcala was named a National Scientist of the Philippines in 2014 for his research into
Philippine amphibians and reptiles, as well as the conservation of marine-protected
areas.
2. RAMON CABANOS BARBA
Barba was named a National Scientist of the Philippines in 2014 for inventing a way to
induce flowering in mango trees regardless of season, boosting the local mango
industry.

3. TETCHI CRUZ CAPELLAN


Cruz-Capellan, the CEO of Philippine renewable energy provider SunAsia Energy Inc. and
founder of the Philippine Solar Power Alliance, hopes to grow the solar power industry
in the Philippines. She first became acquainted with solar power as the country director
of a rural electrification project funded by the USAID.
4. EDGARDO D. GOMEZ
Gomez led the world’s first national-scale assessment of damage to coral reefs, work
which led to him being conferred the title of National Scientist of the Philippines in
2014.
5. ALFREDO MAHAR LAGMAY
Lagmay, a professor at the National Institute of Geological Sciences, University of the
Philippines Diliman, received the 2015 Plinius Medal from the European Geosciences
Union for his research into natural hazards and disasters in the Philippines, in particular
volcanic hazards, earthquakes, typhoons, landslides and floods.
6. AISA MIJENO
Mijeno is a professor of engineering at De La Salle University—Lipa in the Philippines.
Together with her brother Ralph, she co-founded Sustainable Alternative Lighting (SALt),
a social enterprise that is developing an LED lamp that runs on just table salt and water

Reyes has been called “The Filipina who proved Einstein right” after her work confirming
Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity on a cosmic scale in 2010 during her Ph.D. studies
in the United States. Reyes currently works as an independent data scientist consulting

Trono was conferred the honor of National Scientist of the Philippines in 2014 for his
research into tropical marine phycology with a focus on seaweed biodiversity.
