Abstract

A faunistic survey of the Hispaniolan bugs of the family Coreidae is presented based on the study of over 1000 specimens
deposited in several entomological collections. The new species Zicca gloriosa sp. nov. is described from the Dominican
Republic. Another 12 species are new records for the island, 11 of them being new records for the Dominican Republic:
Althos obscurator (Fabricius, 1803), Anasa acutangula Stål, 1870, Anasa tristis (De Geer, 1773), Eubule spartocerana
Brailovsky, 1992, Leptoglossus confusus Alayo & Grillo, 1977, Mamurius cubanus Barber & Bruner, 1947, Merocoris
distinctus Dallas, 1852, Merocoris typhaeus (Fabricius, 1798), Phthia rubropicta (Westwood, 1842), Sethenira ferruginea
Stål, 1870, and Zicca rubricator rubricator (Fabricius, 1803). New records for Haiti are Anasa scorbutica (Fabricius,
1798), Catorhintha selector Stål, 1859, Chariesterus gracilicornis Stål, 1870, Rhytidophthia splendida (Valdes, 1910) and
Zicca taeniola (Dallas, 1852). The literature citations presented in Perez-Gelabert (2008) of Leptoglossus cinctus (Her-
rich-Schäffer, 1836) and Leptoglossus stigma (Herbst, 1784) are probably based on erroneous identifications and not
counted as part of the Hispaniolan fauna. The total number of species presently known from Hispaniola is raised to 28.
Key to subfamilies, tribes, genera and species are included, as well as color dorsal habitus.

1773), Eubule spartocerana Brailovsky, 1992, Leptoglossus confusus Alayo & Grillo, 1977, Mamurius cubanus Barber
& Bruner, 1947, Merocoris distinctus Dallas, 1852, Merocoris typhaeus (Fabricius, 1798), Phthia rubropicta (Westwood,
1842), Sethenira ferruginea Stål, 1870, y Zicca rubricator rubricator (Fabricius, 1803). Nuevos registros para Haití son:
Anasa scorbutica (Fabricius, 1798), Catorhintha selector Stål, 1859, Chariesterus gracilicornis Stål, 1870, Rhytidophthia
splendida (Valdes, 1910) y Zicca taeniola (Dallas, 1852).

Introduction

Bugs of the family Coreidae are commonly known as squash bugs, leaf-footed bugs or plant-feeding bugs and
usually are phytophagous sap-sucking hemipterans that vary from medium to large in size and feed on a wide
variety of plants. Both nymphs and adults suck sap from foliage, flowers, fruits and seeds, affecting cultivated
plants and fruit production. Occasional reports mention that some individuals imbibe fluids from descomposing
animal carcasses. Although normally not a severe problem, some species have the potential to become serious
pests. Adults and nymphs are capable of exuding a strong-smelling fluid when disturbed (Froeschner 1988 in
Henry & Froeschner 1988); Schuh & Slater 1995; Brailovsky 2011).
The coreids are characterized by having the head usually small, relative to body size; antennae inserted above
a line running through the center of eyes; rostrum with four segments; hind femur sometimes ornamented with
large spines; hemelytral membrane usually with numerous veins; well developed scent glands opening ventrally on
the metathorax of adults; nymphal dorsal abdominal scent glands orifices between terga IV–V and V–VI; and all
abdominal spiracle ventral. The body sizes include the largest living heteroperans, as well as other species that are
delicate or slender. The body color is variable (Levin Mitchell in Schaefer & Panizzi 2000; Schuh & Slater 1995;
Brailovsky 2011)
At present, the known global diversity of Coreidae includes 2,563 valid species classified in 432 genera,
making them the fourth largest family of true bugs (Heteroptera) after the Miridae (>10,000 species), Reduviidae
(~7500 species) and Tingidae (~2,600 species).
Hispaniola is the second largest island of the West Indies (Greater Antilles, Lesser Antilles and Bahamas), with
nearly 78,000 km2 and is located in the Caribbean Basin just under the Tropic of Cancer within 17º 40’ and 19º 56’
North latitude and 68º 20’ and 72º 01’ West longitude (Fig. 1). Two countries are the political tenants of this natural
geographic unit: Haiti in the western one-third and the Dominican Republic on the eastern two-thirds of the
territory. The remarkable physiographic variability of its terrain includes the highest and most extensive mountain
systems in the West Indies. Four cordilleras extend across the island in a northwest – southeast axis with valleys in
between. Some peaks reach upwards of 3000 m, while there are also areas below sea level. This mosaic of
microclimates and ecosystems throughout the island harbors a rich flora and fauna with significant numbers of
endemic species. Two major and previously independent terranes or paleoislands coalesced to form modern
Hispaniola. When brought together, the total biological diversity of this territory increased. At present, many areas
of this insular environment have been significantly altered by agriculture, introduction of exotic plant and animal
species, and urbanization. A total of 5,676 insect species were recorded from Hispaniola by Perez-Gelabert (2008)
in the first checklist ever to produce a quantification of the existing knowledge of its arthropod fauna. Despite the
important advance, the insect fauna of Hispaniola still is the least known of the Greater Antilles.
In the islands of the West Indies, the diversity of Coreidae is relatively low, only including some 60 species in
24 genera classified in the subfamilies Meropachyinae and Coreinae. Seventeen species of Coreidae were included
in the list of Perez-Gelabert (2008), although two are probable misidentifications.
The characterization of West Indian coreids started with some of the classical works of Hemiptera taxonomy in
the 19th century, which included the first descriptions of species from these islands. For example, Palisot de
Beauvois (1805–1822) described one of the most common coreids in Hispaniola, Acanthocerus crucifer in 1818.
The most significant contributions to the taxonomic knowledge of Coreidae in the West Indian area are the reviews
of Ruckes (1955) on Chariesterus and the works of Brailovsky (some of these with collaborators) on Anasa (1985,
2001, 2008), Catorhintha (1987), Sphictyrtus (1989), Althos (1990), Zicca (1992), Chondrocera (1994), Phthia
complex (2009) and Leptoglossus (2014), among other works. Faunistic studies of coreids in the West Indies were
summarized most thoroughly in Cuba by Barber & Bruner (1947); Alayo (1967); Bruner, Scaramuzza & Otero
(1975); Alayo & Grillo (1977) and Grillo (2012). Various works included species from Puerto Rico and other
islands (Barber 1923, 1926; Allen 1969; O’Shea 1980; Halbert & Brambila 2005). The compilation of Wolcott
(1948) for Puerto Rican insects contains the most comprehensive summary of coreids in that island. As for many

A REVIEW OF THE COREIDAE OF HISPANIOLA Zootaxa 4568 (2) © 2019 Magnolia Press · 203
other insect groups, a faunistic study and thorough sampling of coreids in Hispaniola has never been attempted.
Due to the paucity of insect collections from Haiti, that part of the island is even less known. The only existing
summary of the Coreidae fauna of Hispaniola is found within the checklist of Hispaniolan arthropods by Perez-
Gelabert (2008). A more thorough sampling of ecologically unique forest areas is expected to yield still unknown
species.
The Coreidae of the Dominican Republic include two subfamilies, seven tribes, 16 genera, and 28 species, one
of them new to science. The Coreidae of Haiti include one subfamily, four tribes, seven genera and eight species all
but Rhytidophthia splendida also cited from the Dominican Republic. The purpose of this work is to characterize
the extent of diversity of the Hispaniolan fauna of Coreidae based on the study of a large number of specimens.

Subfamily Meropachyinae

Tribe Merocorini

Discussion. The tribe is represented by a single genus, Merocoris Perty 1833, with two subgenera and eight
species. The subgenus Merocoris (Perty 1833) is characterized by having the antenniferous tubercle unarmed, the
anterolateral borders of the pronotum smooth or with a single tubercle, and the scutellar disk conically raised. It
includes five South American species. The subgenus Corynocoris (Mayr 1866) has the antenniferous tubercles
externally armed with a stout spine, the anterolateral borders of the pronotum with two or more tubercles, and the
scutellar disk almost flat. The genus includes three species distributed in North America, Central America and the
Greater Antilles (Brailovsky and Barrera 2009).

Merocoris Perty 1830

Merocoris (Corynocoris) Mayr 1866

Diagnosis. Body stout, thickly pubescent. Hind femora curved, slender on proximal half, strongly swollen distally
with a series of large ventral spines. Head short, armed with a short sharp spine at base. Pronotum strongly
declivent. Scutellum triangular, short, reaching onto base of claval commissure, with apex elevated as a small
knob. Scutellar disk carinate mesally, irregularly sculptured laterally. Abdominal spiracles circular, tiny, and
located between the anterior and middle third of each sternite.

(Fig. 3)

Lygaeus typhaeus Fabricius, 1798: 537.

Discussion. Distinguished by having body thick, oblong-ovoid, thickly clothed with a mat of woolly pubescent
hairs; ocelli set on tubercles; interocular space with short tubercle near the inner border of each eye; antennal
segment I subclavate, tapering toward the base from the middle; anterolateral borders of pronotum with 3 to 4 large
teeth; humeral angles subacute; posterior margin deeply emarginate; and endocorium with large black glabrous
spot forming an irregular black patch.
General distribution. Cited from Cuba and the United States (Blöte 1938; Barber & Bruner 1947;

Subfamily Coreinae

Tribe Acanthocerini

Acanthocerus Palisot de Beauvois 1818

Diagnosis. Body medium-sized, relatively robust, oblong. Antenniferous tubercles armed laterally with short and
stout spine. Antennal segment III cylindrical. Ocelli raised. Postocular tubercle exposed. Pronotum steeply
declivent. Anterolateral and posterolateral margins of pronotum uniformly dentate. Frontal angles projected into
stout spine, almost reaching the postocular tubercle. Humeri widely expended, slightly produced laterally with the
humeral spine blunt, directed outward and slightly backward. Posterior border straight. Triangular process present.
Dorsal surface of pronotum punctate, not tuberculate. Posterior lobe of metapleura bearing a lobe in the male.
Femora armed. Hind femora of males more incrasste than females and each dorsally tuberculate. Metathoracic
peritreme bilobate.
Distribution. The genus includes three species restricted to the Antilles: Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and
Haiti. The record of the genus in the United States (Florida) according to O’Shea (1975) and Baranowski & Slater
(1986) is probably incorrect due to mis-labeling.

*This genus currently considered as incertae sedis does not belong to Nematopodini or Anisoscelini and has been considered
elsewhere (O’Shea 1979, 1980). As long as it precise tribal position is not ascertained, and in order to facilitate its
identification, in this contribution it is temporarly assigned to that tribe.

Chondrocera Laporte 1832

Diagnosis. Hind tibiae with inner and outer face expanded. Head non declivent, porrect, extending forward beyond
antenniferous tubercles. Antennal segments II–III expanded and flattened or nearly cylindrical. Posttylar
depression single. Humeral angles projected on a short to medium-sized spine directed laterally and slightly
backward.
Distribution. The genus includes two species and one subspecies cited from the Bahamas, Cuba, the
Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe and the United States. One species occurs in Hispaniola (Baranowski & Slater
1986, Brailovsky 1994, Packauskas 2010).
