Standard - 3.2.1.B1
Demonstrate various types of motion. Observe and describe how pushes and
pulls change the motion of objects.
The students will be able to identify when an object is pulled and if it was
pulled hard or soft by observing the speed the object moves at and the effort
needed to move it.

III. Subject Matter/ Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, new
content)
● Prerequisite skills:
○ How to tie a knot
● Vocab:
○ Pull
○ Hard pull
○ Soft pull
● Big Idea:
○ A pull is something that moves an object toward you.
● New Content:
○ What a pull is
○ Hard pull means things move faster than soft pull
○ Pull is the opposite of push
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction -
● “Good morning boys and girls! I hope everyone is having a great day.
Today I’m not going to tell you what we are learning about. Instead we
are going to listen to a story and see if we can guess what our lesson is
today. If you are ready for our story give me a thumbs up.”
● Play read aloud
○ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JLOjt0gJBs
● “Who can raise their hand and tell me what they think we are learning
about today?”
○ Pick on 2-3 students
■ Stop if a student guesses pull
■ If nobody guesses pull prompt by saying “The story was
called Push, PULL, Go”
● “Yes. Today we are going to learn about pull. Does anybody think they
know what a pull is?”
○ Pick 2-3 students
○ Repeat parts of the answer that fit the definition
● “Great explanations everyone. A pull is something that moves an object
closer to you. It is the exact opposite of push because...what does push
do?”
○ Pick a student
B. Development –
● “Yes a push moves something away from you. A pull on the other hand
moves something closer to you. As we saw in the book sometimes a pull
can be hard to identify because it may not seem like something is moving
closer to you. For example, when we climb a ladder we are actually
pulling ourselves up, closer to the top. What are some other things we
may pull?”
○ Pick 4-5 students
■ Repeat answers and say if it is something we pull or if it is
something different
● “Just like with push there are two types of pull, a hard pull and a soft
pull. A hard pull means you put more effort or force behind it and a soft
pull means you put less. Let’s practice. Everyone take out your toy car
and string. We are going to tie one end of the string to the car.”
○ Demonstrate
● “When you are done tying your string to the car hold it up to the camera
so I can see it.”
○ Make sure most students have the car with string attached
● “Good now everyone put the car on one end of your table and hold the
other end of the string in your hand. Now give the string a soft pull
across your table. What happened?”
○ Pick 2-3 students to answer
● “Great, now everyone put their car back on the same end of the table and
keep the other end of the string in your hand. Now give it a hard pull
across your table, but not too hard because we don’t want to break
anything. What was different this time?”
○ Pick 2-3 students to answer
■ Repeat answers and emphasize anything relating to the car’s
speed
● “When we give something a hard pull does it go faster or slower? Give
me a green check if it goes faster and a red “x” if it goes slower.”
○ Check student answers
● “An object will go faster if we give it a hard pull and slower if we give it a
soft pull. Another difference is that if something is heavy we have to put
in a lot more effort to pull it. Do you think this would be a hard pull or a
soft pull? Give me a green check for hard pull and red “x” for a soft pull.”
○ Check student answers
● “A heavy object requires a hard pull because it needs more force to
move.”
C. Closure –
● “Let’s play a game to see if we are pull masters. I’m going to give you an
example and if you think it was given a hard pull give me a thumbs up. If
you think it was a soft pull give me a thumbs down. If you’re ready put
your finger on your nose.”
○ “I pull a desk with all my might. Is this an example of a hard pull or
a soft pull?”
■ Check student answers
■ “This was an example of a hard pull because I had to put a
lot of effort in to move the desk.”
○ “If I pull a book from a shelf with just two fingers is that a hard
pull or a soft pull?”
■ Check student answers
■ “This is an example of a soft pull because I didn’t need to put
in much effort and only used two fingers.”
○ What if I pull a wagon and it goes super slow? Is that a hard pull or
a soft pull?”
■ Check student answers
■ “This is an example of a soft pull because it went really
slowly.”
○ “Last one. If I pull a wagon and run away with it really fast is that a
hard pull or a soft pull?”
■ Check student answers
■ “This is an example of a hard pull because it went really
fast.”
● “Great job today everybody! We must be pull masters! To celebrate let’s
all raise the roof.”
○ Raise the roof
● “Now everybody can unmute their mic and say goodbye to all of your
friends.”
○ Wave goodbye
