Lazy Pelican: Outdoor Furniture
From June to August of 2018 I worked an internship for a furniture company called
Woodchuck Industries. For the internship, I was tasked with creating outdoor
seating that had one major goal: to be a functional piece of outdoor furniture that
would be known as “the last Adirondack chair you’ll ever need to buy”. The end
result was two chairs that each had their own individual style and uniqueness. I
spent ten weeks on this project, and over the course of that time I learned many
new skills and expanded my understanding of seating all around.

To build the prototypes and final models, I used Rhinoceros 3D to create models
and then draw lines to make a cut file for a CNC machine to cut the individual
pieces out for each chair. The final sketch models were made out of MDF and the
final models out of high-density polyethylene plastic.

POSE
POSE
POSE was a chair created for fourth year design studio in which I was tasked with
designing seating that was inspired by something that inspired me. The things that
I chose was the art of dance. I have felt that dance has been an intersting practice
due to the freedom that comes with it as well as the ability that people show
when they perform. The way that the body moves and the intricacies of form truly
fascinate me. Especiall

Voguing comes in two

forms, an old way
and a new way. The
old way started in the
1980’s (inspired by
fashion and poses)
and the new way in
the 2000’s (inspired
by contemporary
dance and ballet).
POSE
To get the forms that are present in the POSE chair, I had to implore a variety of
metalworking processes including bending, bandsawing, grinding, welding, and
forging.

Inspired by
Ethiopia
Inspired by Ethiopia
“Inspired by Ethiopia” is a set of tables that I designed in my 4th year of studies in
undergrad. The two tables are drew inspiration from the Surma and Hamar tribes
of Ethiopia and are called Luka and Bareednia. The expectations for the project
were to create pieces of furniture that were to be definitive of our abilities as
industrial designers.
Inspired by Ethiopia
For the pieces that make up “Inspired by Ethiopia”, cultural contexts for the Surma
and Hamar tribes as to gain somewhat of an understanding as to what different
aspects of their cultures represented. I ended up drawing key inspirations from
the scarification process for beauty in the Surma peoples; and the coming of age
cermony for young men from the Hamar peoples.

Retouching
This was a simple refinishing project that I did for the Kahn family in Chapel Hill,
North Carolina. The family had an old piece of furniture from nearly a century
ago that they wanted repainted and updated. To start the process, I stripped the
furniture of its original finish with sanding and lacquer thinner. I then applied a few
coats of primer followed by a few coats of black lacquer. I then topped it all off
with a coat of cyrstal clear lacquer for sheen.
For the drawer handles, they were a tad worn but not much so I simply applied a a
coat of clear coat lacquer to bring back the sheen.
