Instructions: Answer FIVE FULL questions, choosing one from each unit.

UNIT -1

1. a) Determine even and odd components of: 6


i) x(t)= ejt
ii). x(t)=u(t)-u(t-3)

b) sketch the following signals: 6


i) x(t)= 3u(t)-u(t-1)-u(t-2)-u(t-3)
ii) x(t)= r(t+1)-2r(t)-r(t-1)

c) Verify the linearity ,time invariance properties of following systems: 8


i)y(t)= x(t/2)
ii) y(n)=nx(n)

UNIT-2

2. a) Analyze and sketch the discrete time convolution sum of the signal: x(n)=[1, 2, 4, 10
1]; h(n)=[2, 4, 2, 1] by graphical method
b) A system is described by a discrete system and represented by difference equation: 10
y(n) - 6 y(n-1) + 9y(n-2) = 3u(n) with initial condition y(-1) = 10 and y(-2) = 5.
Find the total response of the system at 15th instant using generalized expression
Using the knowledge of signals and systems. Verify the results for initial two instants.
Infer the advantage of the generalized expression.

3. a) Determine the response of the system using convolution integral, where x(t) is the 10
input signal and h(t) is the unit impulse response specified as follows.
x(t) = u(t) – u(t-1); h(t) = 2 [ u(t+1) – u(t-1)]; Plot the result y(t) versus t.

b) A Process control system is described by a continuous system and described by a 10


differential equation d2y/dt2 + 3dy/dt + 2 y(t) = x(t) for t≥0, With initial condition y(0)
= 3 and dy/dt(0) = 4
Determine the generalized response of the system using the knowledge of signals and
systems for (i) Input x(t) = 4e-4t (ii) Input x(t) =2e-2t
