ESSAY: RELEVANCE OF RIZAL COURSE

IN OUR CONTEMPORARY ERA

Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda is considered as the well-respected

national hero of the Philippines, “the pen is mightier than the sword.”. He was born on June 19,
1861 at Calamba, Laguna and died on December 30, 1896. He was a patriot, physician, and man
of letters who was an inspiration to the Philippine nationalist movement. He was the author of
Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo, Mi Ultimo Adios, Junta Al Pasig, and many more. He
became the leader of the Propaganda Movement, contributing numerous articles to its
newspaper, La Solidaridad, published in Barcelona.

Presenting the background of Rizal stated above, I do believe that many people don’t
know most of that. This is why Rizal Course is needed to be tackled or included in medical
laboratory science curriculum. Even though Rizal course is just an elective course, students
should still take this subject seriously. Students should interpret the values exemplified in Rizal’s
works and writings because this will help them to build a nationalistic personality. Rizal is a
good role model to Filipinos. Rizal shows that we don’t need to use swords and shields just to be
a hero. Rizal used his mind and pen to fight the Spaniards. We should also embody this mindset
because we can also be a hero. Rizal course is relevant to this program because it teaches
nationalism and patriotism to students. We are taking medical laboratory science which is
inclined on jobs that serves the nation and society. In the near future, we can be doctors or
medical laboratory scientists and can be called as medical front liners. Rizal course helps us to
build a nationalistic and patriotic mind. We are Filipinos and we should prioritize serving
Filipinos too. But this mindset is limited because in medical field, workers oath that they will
serve people without prejudice on their race, gender, age, and social status.

As of now, Philippines is affected by Covid-19 pandemic outbreak. This is why schools

promote synchronous and asynchronous teaching mode to provide quality education to students.
No one can get outside unless you’re allowed to work. In this time of crisis, I do believe that
medical workers are the Jose Rizal of today’s era. They don’t use swords or guns to protect the
country, rather they are using laboratory tools to fight the main archnemesis, which is the
COVID-19. Medical workers or also called medical front liners embodies the values of Jose
Rizal’s works and writings.
