Mechanics
What does your weight depend on?

• The weight w of an object

depends on its mass and
the local strength of
gravity- we call this g
• g is the acceleration due to
gravity
• Wherever you are on the
earth, it pulls you with a
force that points to the
center of the earth

Example – a falling object How to calculate weight

• Weight (w)
time velocity = mass (m) x acceleration due to gravity (g)

0s 0 m/s • w = m / g = mg
+ 10 m/s
• Units to be used in this formula:
1s 10 m/s – m is in kilograms (kg)
+ 10 m/s Change in
2s 20 m/s velocity, or – g » 10 m/s2
+ 10 m/s acceleration – w is in force units called Newtons (N)
3s 30 m/s »10 m/s/s
+ 10 m/s or, 10 m/s2
4s 40 m/s
5s 50 m/s + 10 m/s 11
» means approximately equal to 12
Discussion:

What is the weight of a 100 kg object?

w = m x g = 100 kg x 10 m/s2 = 1000 N

• One Newton is equal to 0.225 pounds (lb), so in these common units 1000 N = 225 lb
• Often weights are given by the equivalent mass in kilograms. We would say that a 225 lb
man “weighs” 100 kg; this is commonly done but, it is technically incorrect.

The Acceleration Due to Gravity. — When an object falls to earth it is acted on by two forces:
gravity and a drag force (air resistance) due to the air molecules hitting it. For objects that fall to
earth from a distance of several feet or meters, the effect of air resistance can usually be neglected.
To simplify the discussion of gravity, we will just ignore air resistance for now. When an object is
dropped it falls to the ground—this is what is called free fall. Acceleration means increase in
velocity and it is a measure of the rate at which the velocity increases – it is the amount of change
in velocity divided by the time interval over which the change occurs. In mathematical terms we
write for the acceleration a:

Δv is read “delta v” and means the change in velocity, and Δt read “delta t” is the time interval.
This is just the usual meaning of acceleration – when your car accelerates, its speed increases; you
push down on the accelerator to go faster.
Note that an object that moves with a constant speed has an acceleration of zero. Since the speed
increases 10 m/s each second, the acceleration is 10 m/s/s = 10 m/s 2. This important parameter is
called the acceleration due to gravity and is given the special symbol g, so that
