Acknowledgment

With grateful heart I would remember the individuals who have helped me direct or indirectly to
complete the practical session for the determination of flakiness index and elongation index for
course aggregate successfully and effectively. I wish to place on record my words of gratitude to
Ms.kersia (HND in Civil Engineering) Laboratory in-charge in BCAS who guided us during the
practical. I sincerely thank her for she’s guidance and information. I would like to say that I noted
this practical implementation helped me to brush gray areas and to engrave in mind the theory
knowledge. Finally I would like to offer my special thanks to the institution (BACS) to provided
laboratory and every apparatus which was needed to the practical.

Purpose of Experiment

Main purpose of these two experiments is determine the Flakiness index and Elongation Index of
Course aggregate. Through these experiments we can come to some conclusions such as whether
the Flakiness index and Elongation Index less than 40 or more which will decide the course
aggregate whether it is suitable for making satisfactory concrete or not, and so on.

Flakiness Index for course aggregate

Materials Used

 Scoop
 Balance with Receiver
 Stop watch
 1200g course aggregate
 Stack of sieves of sizes 28mm,20mm,14mm,12.5mm,10.5mm and pan
 Thickness gauge

Procedure

1) First of all the quantity of aggregate will be taken enough to provide the minimum number of 200
pieces. But we took 1200g of course Aggregate which was contained approximately 400 pieces.
2) The sample of course aggregate will be put on sieves.
3
3) Then stack of sieves will be shaken in varied motion, back word and forward, left and right,
clockwise and anti-clockwise until 3 to 5 minutes.
4) The weight of retaining samples from each sieve which passing through the suitable thikness slot
will be weighed.
5) Finally calculation will be done to fine the flakiness index.

Observation

 Improper sieving may give an error results and calculations.

 nothing was retained in 28mm gauge

Conclusion

Due to the flakiness index of sample is less than 40 these aggregates are suitable for making
satisfactory concrete.

Elongation Index of Course Aggregate

Apparats

 Scoop
 Balance with Receiver
 Stop watch
 1200g course aggregate
 Stack of sieves of sizes 28mm,20mm,14mm,12.5mm,10.5mm and pan
 Length Gauge

Procedure

 The same procedure which was taken to determine the flakiness index will be taken for
elongation index as well. But the weight of retaining samples from each sieve which passing
through the suitable length slot will be weighed to determine the elongation index. Finally
calculation will be done.

Observation

The same observations which has mentioned for flakiness index.

Conclusion

Due to the Elongation Index of sample is less than 40 these aggregates are suitable for making
satisfactory concrete.
