Course Description: MAT 240 - Statistical Methods | Credits 3.00

This course is an introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics. Topics include: graphical and
numerical summaries of data, correlation and regression, properties and applications of the normal
distribution, sampling distributions, confidence intervals, and hypothesis tests for means and
proportions. Prerequisite: MAT 120 or equivalent.

Required Text/Materials:
 Fundamentals of Statistics, 5th Edition by Michael Sullivan, III, bundled with MyStatLab Student
Access Kit is REQUIRED. You must have access to the textbook during class as either a hardcopy
text or an electronic text. MyStatLab is a companion online homework, tutorial, and assessment
system. An access code will be bundled with new textbooks purchased at the UMO bookstore. If
you purchase or rent your textbook from another vendor, and it is not bundled with a
MyStatLab access kit, you will also need to purchase a MyStatLab access code to complete the
online assignments. It can also be purchased separately at www.coursecompass.com.
 Laptops or tablets are permitted during class to access the textbook, class Moodle page, or
other programs being used in class (PPT, Excel, etc.). It is not permissible to check email, social
media, etc. during class.
 A Texas Instruments graphing calculator with built-in statistical functions is required (TI-84 or
TI-84 Plus is recommended).
 Access to Microsoft Excel is required

Student Learning Outcomes Means of Assessment

Upon successful completion of this course, These outcomes will be indicated by successful
students should be able to: completion of:
1. Summarize data using tables and graphs.  Weekly mastery-based online homework
2. Calculate and interpret measures of central assignments (SLOs 1 – 9)
tendency, measures of position, and  Unit tests/exam (SLOs 1 – 9)
measures of dispersion.  Excel projects (SLOs 1 – 4)
3. Apply the Empirical Rule to bell-shaped data.  Graphing calculator activity (SLO 6)
4. Perform a linear regression analysis and
interpret the results.
5. Identify discrete probability distributions.
6. Solve area and proportion problems related
to the normal probability distribution.

Fall 2020 1
7. Understand the concept of "statistical
inference" and gain a working knowledge of
data collection, sampling distributions, and
the Central Limit Theorem.
8. Calculate and interpret confidence intervals
for means and proportions.
9. Perform a hypothesis test of means and
proportions.

Evaluation
The following percentages will be used to determine your course average:
Participation: 5%
Online Homework: 30%
Projects: 20%
Tests: 45%

Course Requirements
Online homework assignments consist of problems that correspond to concepts covered in the text.
Each problem may be worked an unlimited number of times. Failure to complete an assignment by its
due date will result in a 10% per day late penalty for all problems not yet completed. Assignments that
are more than 10 days late are not accessible. The grade recorded for completed homework
assignments will be the highest grade earned during the time allotted for completion. Homework
assignments that are still accessible the last week of class must be completed by Thursday, Dec. 3. A
grade of zero will be recorded for each past due assignment not completed by then.

WARNING: If you have several past due homework assignments at the end of the course, your course
average may decrease significantly once zeros have been recorded for past due homework grades and
averaged with completed grades.

To access the online homework assignments, you will need a MyStatLab Student Access Kit (either
bundled with your textbook or purchased separately). In addition to the MyStatLab Access Kit, you will
also need the course name and ID number (provided below), which are unique identifiers for your
course. See the MyLab Statistics Student Registration Instructions document posted on Moodle for
step-by-step directions to access the online homework assignments.

Course Name: MAT 240 Fall 2020

Course ID: cates96978

You will also have Excel and graphing calculator projects that will be turned in as hard copy documents
during class. It is your responsibility to keep up with project due dates. Late work will not be accepted
(you will receive a grade of zero) unless you request an assignment extension via UMO email on or
before the assignment due date.

Three tests will be given. Test I and Test II will be taken in class (paper and pencil tests). Test III will be
taken online. You will be permitted to use one sheet of paper (8.5" x 11") with notes (front and back) as
a reference during the tests. If you’re going to be absent on a test date, you must schedule a makeup
test date PRIOR TO THE ABSENCE. Otherwise, you may receive a grade of zero. All approved make-up
tests must be taken within two calendar business days of the original test date.

Fall 2020 2
Participation is based on attendance. Attendance is required for all class sessions as noted in the
calendar (in-person and Zoom). Each student begins with a participation grade of 100. For each absence,
6 points will be deducted from the participation grade.

Grades for your online homework assignments will post on Coursecompass immediately after you
submit the assignment for grading. Project and test grades will be posted on Coursecompass as
completed and graded. Please note that assignment and test grades will not be posted on MOODLE.
Only the final letter grade earned will be posted on MOODLE.

Grading Scale
Your final average will be rounded up to the nearest whole number to determine your final letter grade.
For example, if your final average is 82.05, it will be rounded up to 83 which corresponds to a final letter
grade of B.

Number Letter GPA

93-100 A 4.0
90-92 A- 3.7
87-89 B+ 3.3
83-86 B 3.0
80-82 B- 2.7
77-79 C+ 2.3
70-76 C 2.0
60-69 D 1.0

Attendance Policy/Makeup Policy:

Due to the size of this class, per UMO’s COVID-19 policy, class will be split into two groups. Group A
includes students whose last name begins with the letter A – I. Group B includes students whose last
name begins with the letter J – Z. Unless otherwise noted in the calendar, Group A will attend class in-
person on Tuesdays, and Group B will attend class in-person on Thursdays. Outside of class, students are
expected to complete the assigned readings, and review the posted materials on Moodle (PPTs, pdfs,
and videos). Attendance will be taken on Moodle during the seated class meetings. Students are
expected to attend all classes (either Tuesdays or Thursdays as assigned) unless there is an extenuating
circumstance that prevents you from attending. Attendance counts towards your class participation
grade. If you come to class late, after roll has been taken, it is your responsibility to see me after class to
ensure you have been marked present for the day. Students who are absent on their Group assigned
day may request to make up the class by attending the other Group assigned day, but such request must
be approved by the instructor before attending a different class. At no time can the class size exceed
more than half the seating capacity of the classroom. In order for an absence to be marked “excused” in
Moodle, YOU must personally request it via UMO email within two calendar days of the absence. An
email from your Professor, University Nurse, or Coach will not be sufficient. I reserve the right to judge
the validity of any excused absence request, and in some cases a demonstration of proof may be
required. Students are also expected to come prepared for class by bringing all required materials
(textbook, calculator, etc.). If you are habitually unprepared, you will be counted absent from class.

The last day to withdraw from Fall 2019 traditional classes is Friday, October 16.
