Figure 1: Vicinity map indicated landmarks, main jeepney route (in yellow)
The UPV guest house site is located in the residential zone of the campus facing the Commonwealth Ave,
although it doesn’t have immediate pedestrian or vehicular access directly from the highway contrary to map
indicated road.
The guest house is within the immediate vicinity of several landmarks such as the Area 2 food shops and
eateries along J.P. Laurel, the former Shopping Center, the University Health Service, the Kalayaan and Acacia
Residence Halls, and the newly constructed track field along Ylanan St. near the Central campus portal. It is also
a few blocks away from the major Jeepney route of the campus along Laurel Ave. and Roces St.
Around the block, there is substantial road access for vehicles, pedestrians, and parking but no defined
demarcations, no sidewalks and roughly damaged road pavements. A ditch/canal drainage separates the site from
the main access road where the portion of the lot is elevated roughly half a meter from the ground.
Behavioral Patterns
Guests are mostly out during the day, and mostly arrive in the afternoon or evening after their respective
duties. They often use the place just for sleep/rest and as baggage drop-offs. Since cooking is not allowed, most
guest eat outside or order take-outs. Guests also work in the house and are allowed to use the office facilities
including the computer and printers. In general, guest interactions are limited or rare and are more often privately
occupied or in their respective rooms or bed spaces.
The caretaker/keeper is the one present in the house most of the day and is occupied in accommodating new
guests, maintenance of the facility, and sometimes cooking meal provisions for guests.
In consideration of the existing UPV guest house, it is understood that the spaces provided clearly affects
guest interactions, usage of the facilities, and the capacity to accommodate guests and activities. It is desirable to
have a facility where guests can be comfortable around shared spaces without compromising their convenience
and privacy.
Spaces/facilities
To address growing needs and demands for housing and lodging of visiting faculties and other guests, the new
guest house should primarily include:
Entry/exit
living room (to accommodate guests, function as a reception, and as a shared space for users)
4-5 bedrooms (small, twin, and/or large bedrooms for various group/ individual guests)
4-5 bathrooms (preferably adjacent to each bedrooms and/or for common use)
kitchen/dining area (enough to accommodate the number of users)
office/lounge (other than the living room)
laundry area
garage/carport
staff quarters (rooms for housekeeping, maintenance, security personnel etc.)
storage/utility
shared/transitional spaces (front yard, hallways, balconies, etc.)
The new guesthouse should also include accessibility features such as ramps, at least 2 staircase for a multi-
storey structures, and preferably natural lighting and ventilation an all spaces mentioned above.
