Course Outlines
SCM 8602: Sourcing Management

Class Time: 6:30 – 9:30 PM (Saturday)

Description:
This course serves the purpose of creating a detailed understanding on the role of sourcing in a supply
chain, ways and means of effectively managing various activities of sourcing management, different
sourcing strategies, contract management and overall procurement execution. This also covers
principles and techniques related to sourcing management that enhances competitive advantage of a
manufacturing or service organization. This covers both strategic and operational issues in the area of
sourcing in the Logistics and Supply Chain Management. At the completion of this course, students
are expected to capably appreciate importance of sourcing management in the global perspective and
learn tools and techniques of making the business competitive with the use of effective sourcing
management.

Educational Objectives/Outcomes

Upon completing this course, students will be able to:


1. Understand process of sourcing and managing sourcing.
2. Develop a procurement strategy for an organization.
3. Discuss the procurement process and how it relates to the supply chain of an organization.
4. Employ competitive bidding and negotiations in the procurement process.
5. Analyze make or buy, price, cost, quality, or inventory decision.
6. Demonstrate the effective selection, development and certification of a supplier network.
7. Apply procurement principles to the acquisition of services.
8. Illustrate techniques for using information technology in purchasing.
9. Summarize the different methods of involving users and suppliers in the procurement process.

Course Requirements:
To maximize the effect of classroom learning, students are expected to read assigned text book or course
materials before attending each class. Students should also be aware that real world examples of sourcing
and procurement can be found in their surroundings and daily life. Therefore, students are encouraged to
pay attention to discover them.
The learning experience offered by this course includes lectures, homework assignments, case studies,
group case studies, class discussions, and presentations. Through the case studies, students will analyze
different business operations and suggest approaches to improve them. Students will also be engaged in
classroom discussion about case studies and findings. In addition to students learning the fundamental
content of the course, the content is designed to foster critical thinking and to facilitate the acquisition of
life-long learning skills. The course and its delivery are designed with a view to assisting the development
of problem solving skills.
Assessment is weighted toward informed, reasoned and well-argued personal opinion based on the
contextual factors and constraints presented in the various scenarios and is consequently, not based on the
acquisition of knowledge alone.

It is expected that all students of the course will attend in all the classes. And students will prepare the
assigned paper/cases before entering in the classes. Papers submitted late will be downgraded by 25%
marks for each day the paper is late.

Teaching Strategy:

The lecture will be delivered in words or through multimedia. Some problems related to relevant topics
will be solved in the class using board. Some handouts will be given to the students related to the topics
discussed. Each topic will be discussed with reference to the particular case study related to the topic.
Suggested Activities By The Students:

Students have to prepare the case study/assignment before coming to the class.
Students have to download the presentation bring it along with book in the class.
Students will be graded based on their active participation in the class. So each student is encouraged to
participate in class discussions, any suggestions, and comments.
